Chapter 450: To the Hundredth Floor [II]

THUNK! THUNK! THUNK!

CRACK!

The crispy sound of the ore vein cracking as Elaina’s pickaxe removes that same ore that is hiding behind the vein of silver.

"Now that is a fine haul of silver right there. We can repurpose these for some jewelry," Elaina nodded in satisfaction as she put the silver ore in the bag.

"No wonder you got so many of those ores back then, Mom. With the mines having so much abundant ore just by descending on each floor, one can be rich if they mine all the ores here." Raye was amazed as he looked around the veins that they had mined out not too long ago.

"And considering that these ores don’t remain after we leave and seem to reset and gain a new batch, I don’t think it will run out anytime soon," Adelaide nodded in agreement.

"Still, the problem with that big upside is the fact that we have to fight monsters every time we need to mine something. Like the ores, monsters also respawn, even if we clear them out." Arthur wipes off his sweat after he finishes collecting all the monster parts they can salvage from the monsters.

"Good work, Arthy. Should we descend to the next floor?" Elaina asked as she returned the pickaxe to the bag.

"Mom, not the Arthy nickname for the nth time! Anyway, the ladder is not too far from here. We can proceed afterwards."

Elaina nodded and picked up the dimensional storage bag and followed the three as they went ahead. Although at first she was enthusiastic to dive deep into the deeper parts of the mines, Elaina is not too happy about it. Part of it is because they will be descending to the floor where Elaina picked up Raye. Ever since she took Raye from that certain floor, she returned there a few more times in hopes that she could make sense of how Raye was there, but when she returned, it was just a barren level of the mines without any signs that the crystals that once covered the whole place even existed.

Will there be a chance that the scenery in that area changes because Raye is present? Elaina has no idea, and honestly, it might come down to his presence, but until then, Elaina is on his guard. Raye might not be her real son, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t mind him getting hurt.

...

Thanks to Arthur and Raye’s new sword, Adelaide barely does anything to deal with the monsters, and Elaina is only relegated to taking the ores as a result. It is mostly the work of the two boys left. Adelaide doesn’t mind, though, as she can conserve her mana for bigger fights and can save more on the mana potions and for Elaina, although she is a bit disappointed that she won’t get to fight as much as she wanted, she’s happy that she is not yet exhausted even after descending for a few floors already.

"Arthur, Raye, how about resting for a bit? We have descended a few floors already and I don’t think pushing yourselves would be a good idea."

"Don’t worry, Mom. Now that we are heading towards floor 50, we can perhaps take this chance to push further."

Adelaide looked at her Mother, who was hiding her nervousness. She already knew why she is looking like that. Considering that the next floor is where she found Raye, Adelaide can somewhat understand the worry that she is feeling right now.

"Don’t worry Mother. Raye is a responsible kid already. He might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he is someone who can think rationally. So whatever happens, we will need to accept it without worry."

With floor 49 cleared, the group is now heading down to the next floor, floor 50. The same floor where Elaina found Raye as a baby, encased in a giant quartz. Will Elaina find the same place barren? Or the same place before where Quartz is littered all over the place?

Still thinking about it, Elaina descends to the next floor, hoping her fears are not going to come true. But it seems that even though some wishes come true, it’s not always going to go the way she wanted it to be.

As soon as she descended the ladder to Floor 50, Elaina looked around and to her horror, the same place where all the Quartz that she had seen many years ago was back once more. Littered all over the place, and nowhere in the area is not covered by the Quartz. It is like the whole room is made out of quartz itself.

"Woah, this place is beautiful!" Raye’s eyes sparkle as he looks around, pretty much in awe at what he is seeing.

"You are right. Isn’t this Quartz? We don’t see these things often, and this floor is littered from the ceiling to floor!" Arthur is also quite amused. "Mom, take a look at this place! It’s beautiful!"

Contrary to the two boys being happy about this new spectacle, Elaina and Adelaide are not. For Elaina, it is already obvious. For Adelaide, after she learned the origins of Raye, she isn’t just going to relax. If Raye is part of the Devil Race, then there is a chance that the one who created the place is a Devil Race, possibly, either Raye’s mother or father.

Adelaide pulls out her weapon and her wand as the two boys don’t seem to notice what is happening. "Boys, don’t just stand there and admire the Quartz! Get ready!"

Elaina also felt the pressure in the air. She couldn’t mistake it. Although it is weaker than before, this is the same pressure that weighed her down before when she was here and was standing before the Quartz that encased Raye. Is it less powerful than before because Raye is present? Or was it due to Raye’s presence that the power was less impactful?

Whatever it is, this allowed the boys who were nonchalant earlier to raise their guards and pull their swords. Nothing is happening, but the pressure remains. Just then, Elaina heard a voice. A woman’s voice. The same woman’s voice that she heard when she had Raye in her hands.

"[Human woman, you have returned and brought along my precious son.]"

"Someone is speaking!" Adelaide frowned as she frantically looked around where the source of the voice was coming from.

Elaina is not going to back down and has decided to talk. "Considering that I have returned here multiple times and seeing an empty place, seeing that it has returned to how it looked when I first arrived this place, does that mean you are going to take back what you have given to me?"

"[Don’t misunderstand, Human Woman. I may not be the one who raised my child because of my situation, but that doesn’t mean you hold the most control over my child. Remember that my son is still my son and nothing can change that.]"

Elaina didn’t want to back down. Not if her motherhood is being challenged by someone who claims to be Raye’s mother even though this same woman is absent throughout Raye’s whole life.

"Maybe I am not his real mother, but I am much more of a mother than you who is absent throughout his whole life!"

Perhaps pissed by what Elaina said, the pressure that they are feeling seems to be sucked on the center of the room where the huge cracked Quartz where Raye was once encased before and is slowly gathering. It didn’t take too long for it to slowly form something in a shape of a humanoid.

"I see. So now you aren’t so coward now that you are slowly showing yourself. Then so be it, show yourself and let’s talk face to face. You and I had a lot to talk to," Elaina said as she pulls her sword out.
