A Single Mother's Farm of the Gods-Chapter 426: New Recipes
Chapter 426: New Recipes
With Princess Tabatha’s invitation to the banquet, Elaina is now inclined to learn more recipes and cook more. Her cooking skills are adequate enough, but her knowledge of dish variety is pretty limited, and most of them are either common foods or beginner-friendly foods. They are good for the public, but if she also serves the royalty, she will have to get more food that is more adequate for the palate of the aristocrats and the royals.
Since her Almanac does not provide recipes, it’s she either invents her own recipe or finds a recipe of her own. And her first choice for those recipes is to go to Douglas’s pub, where he sells both recipes and cooked dishes.
She remembered how Marigold bragged about the recipes she have written and have Douglas cook them and how they are now selling those recipes for those who want to try them at home. And besides, she has not visited Marigold for quite some time so she also wanted to see her. She last heard about Marigold that she has to go to other kingdom to heal up her injuries before they became permanent. After the bombing that was caused by Elaina’s parents back then and suffering the collateral damage, it was a miracle she didn’t lose any limbs in the process but the damage she receive was quite high to the point that she couldn’t properly move her hands and her eyes have gotten blind in the process. She also heard that she is suffering to PTSD and any loud noises would cause her to break down.
Thankfully, it seems that she is back home again after the rehabilitation process and it seems that her treatment is successful thanks to the recommendation that Dr. Fey suggested and she should be ready to return to her prior duty. It was delayed due to war but now that it is over and Douglas has returned, she might have also returned as well.
Instead of going during peak hours, Elaina went there during early time. Thanks to Douglas giving permission to enter the pub before peak hours, Elaina can head there before any customer can go inside. When she went inside, she saw Marigold currently wiping the glasses on the counter and as soon as the door opens, she looked at the door.
"Good morning, Marigold. Long time no see," Elaina greeted with a smile.
"Hey there, Miss Elaina. It has been a long time isn’t it? You look blooming as ever."
"Thanks, how are you now, Marigold? I know I am bringing back up some bad memories but I just wanted to know that I am worried and also a bit responsible for what my late parents did..."
"Oh no, no. It’s fine, dear. I have gone to therapy for a long time that I slowly got over it and I don’t even blame you for what happened. Both of us were victims there and it wasn’t even your fault to begin with. Things would be more catastrophic if not for your intervention. So don’t blame yourself. You see, I am fine and functional now. It’s not going to be a big deal."
"That’s good to know that you are back on your feet again. I wasn’t expecting those things to happen in the first place so I was worried you might hate me for what my parents did."
"It’s alright dear. As I said before, its not your fault. Anyways, its ways till the actual opening time, are you here to just catch up and check up on me?" Marigold asked as she finishes the final glass.
"Actually, I came here to buy some recipes. You said before that you are selling recipes and although I have yet to buy any, I made sure to remember that especially when I started learning how to cook."
"Oh, yeah. I heard from my husband you were the Special Cook to the banquet this coming week. I didn’t expect you to excel so much in cooking to be invited personally by the king himself."
"I don’t really see my cooking to be that good for the palate of the royals to be honest, I made regular meals and just helped the soldiers during the war when the food supply was cut off so perhaps they just wanted to honor my contribution, I guess."
"Still, that is a big thing. Be proud of what you have accomplished. Anyways, my guess is that you are looking for something that would help cook food that would satisfy the palate of the royalty right?"
"Yes. Considering that Mr. Douglas has been cooking for the royalty, perhaps you have already got a few recommendations?"
"Honestly, I don’t think you have to worry about the food that nobles eat too much, Elaina. I heard you were a royalty before you became a farmer but compared to the lifestyle of the nobles on other kingdoms, the nobles here in Darcero Kingdom appreciate any food since a few of the nobles here have come from being commoners and only got uplifted in status after becoming successful in their ventures and earning titles. And even the King and Queen also appreciate regular food as well. You might have noticed how Princess Margaux doesn’t complain anything, yes? You already know her palate since she is living with you."
Elaina nodded in agreement. Princess Margaux is not choosy in food types and as long as they are tasty, she eats them without question.
"Still, that explanation would not be sufficient so I have a few recommendations that would impress and also be considered a bit classy but not too hard to cook food. Wait a bit and I will get the recipe catalogue for you to choose."
Marigold went to the back of the shop and returned immediately, now carrying a book in her hands.
"Here, I recommend this one. Whole roast duck and braised chicken. These are something that the royalty really likes. They are the first ones to be attacked by the people in the banquet and the first ones that gets to run out quickly. If you plan to impress them, cook this and you can definitely show your skills quite well."
Elaina smiled hearing the suggestion. Whole Roast Duck and braised chicken are something she commonly see in banquets back then so hearing this dishes again being mentioned, she can tell that even Marigold has experience.
"Nobles also like vegetables salad so might as well have some of those. I don’t think you needed to buy a recipe from us on salads since even the simplest salad would work and considering the freshness of your crops, you will have good food to serve for them. Instead, focus on fish dishes. I suggest baked fish and roasted fish. They are popular choice and can be also quite good for everyday cooking as well since any fish works as long as they are big enough."
Marigold continued to guide Elaina and suggesting various recipes here and there. In the end, Elaina took the first four recipes that Marigold suggested while also taking the other dishes that she is interested in. They might not be for nobles, but she plans to expand her repertoire so having more of them is good for her.
"Don’t worry about the price too much. I will give you 40 percent discount for these recipes considering we are good friends. I can’t lower the price too much or we will be losing on the capital for writing the recipes on paper. Ink and paper nowadays are quite expensive commodities nowadays."
"Thank you, Marigold."
With the new recipes on hand, Elaina’s next task is to test them out. Considering that she will be also cooking some fishes, Elaina grinned as she rushes back home. It’s time to start fishing again.
