Chapter 96: Soul

Once everyone was asleep as usual, Serena quickly entered her subspace, almost giddy to try out her new notebook and pen. She’d been longing for this for some time now and was ready to get things rolling.

The pen was an original ballpoint pen that one could easily find in any stationary shop. It wasn’t anything fancy. As for the notebook, it was leather bound like her other books and had about three hundred blank pages.

Enough to last her for some time.

She quickly set to work using the first ten pages to make notes about the book’s original plot line and notes on the world. She knew she had the original owner’s memories to help her out and that whatever she was doing was going to have a butterfly effect on the world changing the future.

But it was always better to be safe than sorry and she wanted these on hand in case she forgot something and needed them in the future. Out of habit, she wrote them cryptic.

A part of her knew that no one was going to come across this book since it was going to stay in her subspace, but she wanted to be extra careful. And seeing how Liz was watching her write, it just reaffirmed that.

The blue snake, who had moved to lie in front of her, stared at the book in confusion before it finally asked, "What exactly are you writing there? Can you even write?"

"I can." Serena answered, ignoring the jab. "Perhaps, it’s because you only understand this world’s languages."

Which was a complete lie. Liz would have to know the exact cipher that Serena was using to understand just what in the world she was writing. It had nothing to do with language, not that the system needed to know that.

"That’s not possible." Liz huffed out. "I’ve been given the ability to understand all languages of your world just as you have been given the ability to understand this world’s languages."

That information made Serena pause in her writing to look at the blue snake. She hadn’t thought of it before, but now that it was brought up, it would be strange if this world used the same language system as Earth.

Not to mention she could understand beast tongue whereas the protagonist of this world couldn’t. But Serena figured that had to do with the fact she was a snow leopard beastwoman and the protagonist was completely human in the story.

However, it seemed she was wrong about that and wanted to know more about it. So she asked, "Could you explain what you mean by that?"

"It’s simple. When you were originally bound to the system, you were given the original owner’s memories and their knowledge of language." Liz explained. "The system acts like a translation point, turning everything you hear and see into something you already know. That’s why it feels like the language never changed."

"And it’s the same for you?" Serena asked.

"Kind of... It’s complicated." Liz answered.

Serena pursed her lips at that, but decided to not push it. She could already see that she’d be told that information was off limits and was kind of done for the day with that response.

So, instead she went back to finishing up her notes. Once she was done, Serena stood up, stretching her stiff muscles before moving to grab her basket of books. She took them out before sitting back down on the floor.

She would’ve shifted the room into an office space, but it turned out, you could only start changing the room to your desire from level five. Which Liz conveniently left out when explaining the subspace to her.

Thus she was stuck sitting on the floor to make notes.

"What are you doing now?" Liz asked curiously as it watched her put the stack of books next to her before picking up the notebook and pen again

"I’m working on the city development plan." Serena answered.

"Oh..." Liz murmured, pausing for a moment. It then asked, "So, was that weird writing some kind of diary then? Is that why you were writing weirdly?"

"It’s not a diary and you ask way too many questions for a system." Serena muttered. "Even my androids back on Earth didn’t ask this man questions."

"Well, sorry for having a personality." Liz huffed out. "Guess that’s what happens when you have a soul infused into you."

Serena dropped the pen in her hand and exclaimed, "Say that again?!"

Liz tilted its head at her. "What? tThat I have a personality..."

"No, the thing after that..." Serena said. "I don’t think I heard right."

She never really thought about how the system came to be, just thinking it was some kind of computer type system created by some divine being. After all, stories really went into the details about how systems existed.

They were just there...

"Oh that I’m infused with a soul." Liz stated. "Did I not tell you that?"

"Not really..." Serena replied. She was quiet for a moment before she finally asked, "So... can I ask about it?"

"I suppose so." Liz mused. "It’s not like all of it’s forbidden information. The system was created by 43-gojfrk3qw2 and was sort of becoming unstable because of gfsdf etw grewerdaf fwerw getfwqed. So, ewrdwqedwq used a soul to bind it to this world." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Serena winced at the static noise Liz made between her explanation, wondering if it knew what forbidden information meant. Because half of it seemed like it was forbidden information to her.

Either because her level was too low to access that information or someone, likely the person behind Liz’s creation, didn’t want her knowing the truth.

Still, one thing was clear to her - the system update probably wasn’t just to improve her experience. It was to stabilize it for whatever reason. And someone’s soul was used for the process.

The question now was who’s soul exactly and why them.
