A Luna for Alpha Kieran-Chapter 97: Rush
Chapter 97: Rush
Kieran strode through the great arched hallway like a man who was being chased...or like he had a ship to catch...
Lyla was still cradled in his arms, blinking up at him, utterly silent now. Her confusion clung to her ( maybe a little sweet but it was like an afterthought).
"Alpha,I can walk. Seriously! But where are we going? Why are you in such a hurry??" She asked, her voice breathless from the sharpness of his pace... or perhaps this closeness... who knows!
He did not answer.Like her words did not reach his ears. Like she wasn’t even there.
He kept striding through the halls... the mess to be exact.
Though the celebration still raged on around them..."celebration" was a generous term to describe the situation at the moment.
There were bodies everywhere...drunken, shaken...boozing...barely in their right minds...banging up women here and there...knocking off each others’ teeth...clawing each other for pleasure as more alcohol poured.
The music still raged on but it had already lost its melody. It was bass and rock and metal that reverberated all around fueling the drunken galore.
The many foul scents hung in the air along with too much perfume.
But Kieran smelled only smoke...and danger... his senses on high alert.
And maybe he still caught ’her’ lingering scent... but he tried to dismiss and overlook it for the moment... he had a graver matter at hand... the most important mission ahead of him... Autumn.
But the echo of ’her’ touch still burned through his skin, no matter how tightly he gripped Lyla.
He shook his head and strained his eyes ahead, to get the woman out of his head... they doubled up... catching more speed.
They burst through the back gates of the castle into the night, the guards scrambling to open the iron archway just in time.
Cold wind cut across their faces...the moon illuminated their path...only to be overshadowed by a huge black cloud, plunging them into darkness once more.
But the castle’s torchlight flared behind them immediately, however, Kieran did not look back.
"Can you please slow down?" Lyla muttered. "You are acting like I am dying or something! I don’t understand the rush! "
"You forgot your medicine," he replied curtly, breath curling in the cold air. "I am taking you to your father. What do you want me to do?Toss you somewhere and stand and watch! "
"You would probably enjoy that," she said under her breath not wanting him to hear...but maybe he heard anyway...she didn’t flinch...almost did not care.
This was the longest conversation that they ever had... she tsked at the thought... almost laughed at her situation.
Kieran said nothing.
They crossed the Castle threshold in minutes, as the trees grew denser around them.
And then, at last, the shadow of his black SUV came into view...parked in the tall grass under the open sky, like a predator waiting to pounce.
Lyla tried to look up. An odd place to park one’s car given the sophisticated garage that Velor had for his esteemed guests. But she did not question, of course.
But before he could even lower her to the ground, another car...a sleek silver one...sped towards them from the opposite direction. Headlights flared. Tires screeched.
The car came to a jarring halt not six feet from where they stood.
Kieran’s body tensed on instinct, jaw clenched.
The door flew open.
"Lyla!" Roanoke’s voice was clipped and furious. He stalked across the gravel before the dust could even settle. His face was storm dark. "What the hell were you thinking girl?"
"Father, I..." Lyla blinked as Kieran set her down.
Roanoke did not wait to listen .
He grabbed her by the wrist...too firm, almost rough, and pulled her towards his car without looking at Kieran.
Not even a nod. Forget a greeting. Not even a flicker of acknowledgment.
It was as if Kieran was a shadow.
Kieran watched. Still. Silent.
Lyla hesitated as Roanoke opened the passenger side door. "I didn’t even get to say a goodbye to ..."
"Get in." Roanoke’s tone left no room for protest.
She did.
He slammed the door behind her and strode back to the driver’s side. Kieran stood there and watched...his expression carved from ice.
Roanoke met his eyes at last...only for a split second.
No words.
Then he turned the key.
The engine roared.
The silver car peeled away, gravel flying behind it like sparks. It turned sharply at the bend and disappeared into the dark, its taillights flickering like twin stars being swallowed whole.
But Kieran wasn’t watching anymore.
He was already turning around...toward the woods... outside the Bloodfang borders.
His breath deepened. His muscles coiled.
He didn’t look back. Not even a single glance...
He sper forward... like someone was really dying.
At the tree line, frost glistened on the grass and the scent of pine thickened.
Kieran’s boots crunched over dead leaves until he stood at the very edge of the forest...half in shadow, half in moonlight ( the clouds had moved again).
And then came the movements.
From behind a tree the shape emerged that he was expecting.
Vera.
She stepped forward, wrapped in her ragged shawl, dried blood along her jawline, but her eyes were sharp with lucidity. Her arm was roughly bandaged with some dirty cloth. Her lip was split. But she was standing.
She bowed low.
"My Alpha."
"Cut the crap," Kieran snapped, stepping into her space. "Where were the girls last seen? The ones who disappeared?"
Vera did not flinch. "Most definitely,Alpha! The time is ripe...we should be heading west.
Kieran leaped and grabbed her by the hair and yanked her head back." Remember,if I get even a hint of betrayal,it will only take me a second to snap that ugly skull of yours into two. You get that? " Kieran gritted through his teeth...his voice like steel.
She tilted her head. " I...I am not here to betray you anymore,Alpha.I swear!!! I swear on the Moon."
"Then quit your nonsense. Take me there. Now.And this better be some solid lead...for your own good..."
The wild wind swept through the trees carrying with it the scent of rain somewhere near, but Vera did not move for a moment.
Then, with eerie composure, she turned...slowly...and stepped out of her shawl.
Bones cracked, skin shimmered.
Her wolf exploded from beneath her flesh, sleek and narrow with that silver fur. free𝑤ebnovel.com
"Follow me," she said, her voice echoing through the mind link that had been reinstated, and leapt into the underbrush.
Kieran dropped his coat, eyes flashing amber. With a swift snarl, his own transformation tore through him...bones shifting, claws slicing through the skin, fur surging in a violent ripple of power.
His wolf form was restless, agitated and he took off.
He took off after her without hesitation.
The trees blurred past them, the scent of moss and cold bark whipping through his nostrils as they ran deeper into the forest... towards the sea... though it was a long way... definitely a long way on foot.
Vera’s voice echoed again. "They vanished beyond the northern cliffs. No one ever patrolled past that point... I used to scavenge there..."
"How far?" Kieran growled through his mind...sharp but the agitation was still there. .
"Ten miles. Maybe eleven. I left markers."
Faster.
The forest thinned, the path narrowing between stone and frost laced branches. Moonlight slashed through the trees in long silver ribbons now and then. Sleeping birds took flight from their roosts as the wolves raced beneath them.
Something thrummed beneath the earth.
Kieran felt it already.
He didn’t know what awaited them.
