Chapter 153: Ethan’s Drunken Rage

"Alright, I’ll go help Aston make some supper." After kissing her on the cheek, Alex let go of her hand and left.

Watching Alex’s figure as he walked into the dining room, Lily’s smile slowly faded.

She lifted her hand and looked at the diamond ring on her ring finger. It was beautiful and dazzling, designed as two intertwined hearts shining brightly.

Without letting her mind wander too far, Lily was about to bathe when the phone in the living room suddenly rang.

Lily glanced toward the dining room. Alex and the housekeeper, Uncle He, were both busy making supper. She stepped forward and picked up the phone, "Hello?"

"Lily, you dead woman—"

A furious roar immediately came through the phone, startling Lily so much that she quickly removed the receiver from her ear.

She was all too familiar with that angry tone.

How could it be Ethan?

Why would he be calling here? How does he even know the phone number of Alex’s villa?!

The yelling continued in the receiver. Lily brought it a little closer to her ear to listen.

"Lily! You made me, Ethan, suffer such a huge loss... I’ve never, in my entire life, done something so foolish for a woman! And this is how you treat me?!"

"This is the first time I, Ethan, have confessed to a woman! Lily! How dare you say I’m harassing you?! If I were truly harassing you, you’d have been locked up in my house by now! Do you think you’d still be out there enjoying your freedom?!"

"This is my first confession! Lily, you’re so ungrateful! You heartless woman!"

"Lily, you’re nothing but an ungrateful wolf! Even pigs would show more appreciation! What have I gotten from raising you?!"

Lily silently held the receiver, listening to Ethan curse at her for ten minutes before she realized something was off.

He repeated the same few insults... back and forth, without creativity, mixed with a few curse words.

Nothing else.

She last saw him drunk at the 30 Days Memorial Hotel. He had been so out of control, treating her as though she wasn’t even a living person.

This time, it was clear that he had lost control again, and in terms of his words, he wasn’t even treating her as a person.

Yes, she was heartless and ungrateful—worse than a pig, right?

Then why didn’t he raise a pig instead?! Why waste his time on her?! Why bother yelling at her?!

Ethan continued his tirade.

Lily carefully listened. Apart from Ethan’s roars, there were also some loud crashing noises, as if he were smashing something...

What was he breaking now? Where was he?!

"Mr. Blackwood? Mr. Blackwood? The manager asked me to check if you need any company?"

A weak, unfamiliar male voice came through the phone.

Where was Ethan drinking?

"Get lost!" Ethan roared from the other side, then continued shouting into the phone, "Lily! I must have had the worst luck in eight lifetimes to meet a woman like you! Heartless!"

And the cursing resumed.

Does this man turn into a bomb after he gets drunk?!

Last time, he sent an old man to assault her, then kicked her out...

Since he couldn’t find her this time, he called Alex’s seaside villa to insult her?!

Lily was so frustrated by the curses that her breathing became uneven. She held back her anger and asked, "Where are you now?"

"Why do you care?!" Ethan sneered and continued cursing, "Why should I tell a woman like you where I am?! When have you ever cared about me?! When have you ever shown me any concern?!"

He was very drunk.

Lily wanted to hang up, but then she heard the same weak, unfamiliar male voice again, "Mr. Blackwood is at the 30 Days Memorial Hotel."

It must have been a hotel staff member.

So he was at the 30 Days Hotel?

Lily’s hand froze over the phone. The last time he went wild with alcohol, it was also at the 30 Days Hotel.

The phone was filled with Ethan’s angry roars again, and it sounded like he had beaten up the poor staff member. While hitting him, he shouted, "How dare you meddle in my business! Get out! Get out of here! Who dares point fingers at Ethan Blackwood?! I’ve never suffered such humiliation in my whole life!"

Lily was speechless.

That staff member hadn’t insulted him at all.

He had merely told her the address out of kindness. Was that worth such a vast outburst?

"I’ll call Nanny to pick you up," Lily said, trying to keep her calm. She was about to hang up when the other side suddenly went quiet.

Lily found it odd, and then she heard Ethan suddenly yelling in a low voice, "No! I don’t want to see anyone but you! You come here! Lily, do you hear me?! You come here right now!"

Go there for what?

To be tangled up again?

"I’m telling you, I’ll beat up anyone who comes! If you don’t want to see them all beaten to death, then come here right away!" Drunk as he was, Ethan still commanded her with his usual arrogance.

She wasn’t going.

"Lily! I love you! I damn well love you! Did you hear that?!" Ethan suddenly roared, his voice exploding in her ear, desperate and hoarse.

Lily froze.

Her heart stopped momentarily, and she stared blankly at the phone screen. Tears slipped down her cheeks, warm as they ran over her face.

Clack—

Lily quickly hung up the phone, cutting off Ethan’s voice.

Ethan, telling her he loved her at this point, was too late.

Maybe it had been a fleeting possibility, but from the moment of the celebration at the Carter mansion, their relationship was doomed to fall from heaven to hell.

Lily took a deep breath and dialed a number.

"This is the Blackwood residence," a maid’s voice answered.

"This is Lily. I’m looking for Nanny." Lily wiped away her tears and spoke calmly, trying to keep herself composed.

"Miss Anderson?" Nanny’s voice came on, full of surprise.

"It’s me." Lily paused, then said, "Ethan is at the 30 Days Memorial Hotel. Go pick him up; he’s drunk."

"Oh... okay, Miss Anderson."

Without saying much more, Lily hung up the phone.

She sat in the living room for a long time, unmoving... Ethan’s roaring still echoed in her ears. Every time he yelled, it was like he wanted to burst her eardrums without considering anyone else’s feelings...

Just because she rejected his confession today, he went out drinking?

"You didn’t go take a bath?"

Alex’s surprised voice sounded in the living room.

Lily lifted her head and saw Alex walk over with two juice glasses. Each glass had a little umbrella, looking quite romantic.

"Mm, not yet." Lily nodded. She had just spent over ten minutes listening to Ethan curse her...

From calling her heartless to soulless... and then back again to calling her heartless... to ungrateful wolf...

Alex handed her a glass of juice, then sat on the armrest next to her, leaning down to whisper in her ear, his voice low and gentle, "Lily, are you afraid I might... eat you up?"

"Pfft—" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Lily spat out a mouthful of juice and looked up at him in shock.

Alex said something so suggestive?

Ethan had yelled at her so much that she was hearing things.

Seeing her reaction, Alex smiled, a bit embarrassed. "Uncle He said men should say intimate words between two people to add to the romance. But from your reaction, I can tell... I shouldn’t have said that."

"That’s not your line." Lily chuckled softly.

These words didn’t sound like something Alex would say at all...

Only a brave man like Ethan would say such flirtatious and teasing things without shame.

Thinking of Ethan, Lily’s gaze darkened.

"Then what should my lines be?"

Alex asked gently.

"Uh..." Lily hesitated momentarily, thinking his lines should be more refined and gentlemanly.

Alex gazed down at her thoughtfully, then set aside his glass of juice and gently brushed his thumb over her lips, wiping away the juice.

Lily looked up at Alex, his eyes growing deeper with tenderness, almost with a devouring light, as he slowly lowered his head toward her.

Knowing what he intended to do, Lily’s hands tightened around the fabric of her dress. She didn’t move. Slowly, she raised her face to meet him.

Because it was Alex, she couldn’t avoid him.

Alex cupped her face gently and leaned closer to her lips...

The atmosphere in the living room grew intimate.

Ring, ring, ring—

The vintage phone suddenly rang.

Lily saw Alex immediately frown in frustration.

The kiss didn’t happen.

Alex helplessly held up two fingers toward Lily, sighing, "Twice! This is the second time!"

What was going on tonight? They had almost kissed twice, only to be interrupted by the phone. Even movie plots weren’t this coincidental.

Lily glanced nervously at the phone, worried Ethan might call again to insult her. The things he had said weren’t pleasant to hear. Would Alex misunderstand if he heard them?

The phone kept ringing.

Alex, with no other choice, sighed and pulled Lily into his arms. He sat on the sofa with her in his lap and pressed the speaker button. "Hello?"

"Where’s my daughter?" A deep, middle-aged man’s voice came through the phone.

Dad?!

Lily froze momentarily and quickly responded, "Dad, I’m here."

How did Dad get the Carter house’s phone number?

She didn’t remember telling him...

Today, both Dad and Ethan acted mysteriously. How did they both manage to call Alex’s place to find her?

"Why is your phone off?" Henry Anderson asked, sounding irritated.

"I turned it off for a bit," Lily obediently answered.

"It’s already 10:30pm! Did you forget what I told you? Why aren’t you home yet?!"

"Oh, okay, I’ll come back right away..." Lily was about to agree when Alex covered her mouth gently, speaking warmly into the phone, "Uncle Henry, it’s quite late already. How about Lily stays here for the night?"

Lily wanted to stop Alex, but it was too late...

"My daughter is not just any woman. Is it alright for her to stay the night before you marry? Alex, what do you take my daughter for?!"

As expected, Henry immediately scolded angrily, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.

Since Henry had said this, Alex naturally didn’t dare insist, not wanting to leave a wrong impression in front of him.

"Uncle Henry, please don’t be upset. After supper, I’ll send Lily home," Alex said helplessly, glancing at Lily.

"There’s no need to eat; just bring her back now!"

Henry hung up the phone heavily, and the dial tone echoed in the room.

"Your father really doesn’t trust me." Alex sighed, feeling a bit defeated. "I remember he was so fond of me when I was a kid."

"Give him some time," Lily could only say this.

Her father’s disapproval of Alex, the humiliation from Uncle Bill...

They had once been the closest of families, but things turned out like this. She and Alex had finally gotten together, but the adults of both families were no longer on good terms.

"Let’s go. I’ll take you home." Alex stood up, holding her in his arms.

Lily was about to fall, but Alex didn’t let her go. He lowered his head and gently bumped his forehead against hers. "Let me carry you for a bit longer."

Lily didn’t resist anymore, resting quietly in his embrace as her eyes fell again on the ring on her finger.
