Chapter 267: Marshall

All eyes shifted upon hearing that deep voice, and upon recognising the man standing there, Aegon stood up in surprise. Even Samuel sat up straight while Amon just squinted his eyes behind his monocle.

"You sure took your time," Liliana said, standing up. "Finally found the courage to come inside."

"You’re in a good mood today," Arthur noted, as it was really rare for Liliana to joke around like this. "What happened?"

"You’ll know in a bit," Liliana smiled lightly and turned towards Claire who stood there dumbfounded. She patted her shoulder and said, "Even after so much time, you can’t understand my humour. Are you seriously this slow?"

She sighed, "I’m now reconsidering my offer."

Claire’s lips twitched hearing that. How was she supposed to know that was humour? Especially in that scary tone that always scared her to the core?

Still, she was happy to know that she wouldn’t receive the punishment.

’Phew! I don’t have to go to Sofalic Falls. I’m safe!’

It was only then she noticed her surroundings properly and froze. Her mind reeled in shock as she wondered if she was imagining things.

’W-What is happening? Why are so many influential people here?’

She couldn’t believe it for a second and looked at them again to confirm.

The Emperor was there sitting in his casual clothes, having a peaceful aura around him. Why did he seem like your neighbour grandpa? When did the strongest human become like this?

She shifted to Amon. The dean of the best Academy was also here. The man who carried Humanity’s interests on his shoulders and nurtured the future geniuses of the Empire.

Sitting beside him was Kai, a world-renowned Runemaster and Soul Cultivator. He was one of the best outside of House Valeria’s influence. Yet the man currently sat there casually.

Claire shifted slightly forward and realised something else. Liliana and Arthur also carried special identities and they were currently in the mansion of House Augustus.

’This is basically the gathering of the pillars of humanity. People would die to get a glimpse of this.’

Liliana tapped her cheeks and said, "Stop thinking so much. It doesn’t suit you."

"W-What?" Claire got flustered and angry, but she couldn’t even retort to her. "Stop teasing me, Mistress."

"Then stop being silly," Liliana rolled her eyes. "I called you for something important, so come sit with me."

Meanwhile, Aegon watched them go to her seat before turning back towards Arthur who stood there silently, unsure of how to proceed. Others also simply sat in their places, wondering about the situation.

Aegon could sense his friend’s questioning gaze but he ignored it for the moment. He went towards Arthur and smiled at him, "Thanks for accepting my invitation, Marshall. I’m glad you came."

Arthur stiffened, realising that Aegon was talking to him. The first time his son talked to him. It left him paralysed for a moment, but realising he was being pathetic, he broke out of his daze.

"It’s nothing. I was actually looking forward to this," Arthur tried to smile, but it came out weird. "I should be the one to say thanks for this."

Aegon looked around and said, "I’m pretty sure we have something to talk about first, so mind walking with me? The garden here is beautiful. Opa took care of it personally."

Arthur’s eyes softened hearing that as he nodded, "It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed peace in that garden too."

"You should do it often," Aegon said. "You feel like you’re half dead from the stress. It’s bad for your health, you know."

"Your humour is bad as always," Samuel said, rubbing his eyes. "Also, why are you all dragging everyone away? You called us for that?"

"Nobody is dragging you into corners, old man. You’re too old for that," Aegon rolled his eyes. "Also, weren’t you sleeping?"

"As if you all will let me sleep," Samuel sighed. "I’m more tired thinking of the future, though."

"About what?" Amon asked. "His inventions?"

"No. I’m used to that," Samuel sighed again. "I meant the Crown Prince who is an idiot."

Aegon smiled. Of course, he understood what Samuel meant. Now that Aegon was planning to do some stuff between Xiu and Micheal, it would heavily impact the Empire’s politics.

Micheal was the Crown Prince with massive support for his succession to the throne, but there were many strong factions which were against him too, led by other Princes.

There was one point they always attacked, as it was Micheal’s weakness. He didn’t marry and never showed any signs of having plans to marry anyone. He didn’t even seem interested in anyone, so that led to everyone condemning him.

If he became the Emperor and did not marry someone, how would he produce an heir to the throne?

It was unacceptable and the opposition always used it to target Micheal, though he never paid much attention to them.

However, the addition of Xiu in the picture would complicate things in Court politics. It would remove the Crown Prince’s biggest weakness, while also strengthening his claim to the throne.

After all, Xiu was a force in herself, as she was one of the strongest Rank 7s the Empire had seen. And as she was still young, she had high chances of breaking through to Rank 8 too.

If that happened, humanity would gain a powerful pillar, and that pillar would side with the Crown Prince.

Not to mention, she also came from House Augustus, so it meant they would also support Micheal. In the whole history of the Empire, no Augustus had married into the Imperial Family, even if they were loyal to them.

So, this would change a lot of things.

As if that wasn’t enough, she was the mother of the last Valerian and heir of House Valeria. Her involvement with Micheal would almost guarantee his succession to the throne.

Other Princes wouldn’t like it and would definitely cause trouble. The Court wouldn’t be silent and as the Emperor, Samuel would have to deal with all of it.

So, Aegon could understand his exhaustion.

"You can stop overthinking for now, old man," Aegon said. "Nothing is even finalised yet. I might not even support it, you know."

Samuel just scoffed in response and went back to sleep.

Aegon shook his head and turned back to Arthur who was looking at them strangely.

"Shall we go, Marshall?"
