Chapter 259: Gap Between Ranks

The world around Aegon seemed to be coming to its end. The annihilation beam of the Titan had him shivering to his core, as that was the closest thing he had witnessed which really felt like a world-ending calamity.

But that wasn’t the end.

Seeing Selena fighting Liliana, only to be casually stopped by her, surprised him. Then, there were the volcanoes that appeared out of nowhere and threatened to destroy the whole Dusk City and its surroundings.

Of course, it wouldn’t happen. There was a Rune Formation protecting it, as it was one of the main cities of the Great Solar Empire.

’This is ridiculous.’

Then, there was Xiu and Marvin’s fight which shifted to a different battlefield real quick. But the effects could still be felt so far away. The shockwaves felt like a heavy earthquake had struck.

The clouds churning above, the lightning bolts descending, that loud explosion that shook the whole region. Everything was making Aegon’s worldview change.

This was the first time he truly saw these powerhouses going fully ballistic. Their battles were beyond any mortal’s scope, as if they were battles of demi-gods.

Except, they weren’t demi-gods.

The system had quickly informed him of everyone’s Ranks. Xiu and Marvin were Rank 7, a rank higher than Cali and the fighter from the Fifty Prince’s team.

Yet, their destructive capabilities far surpassed anything they had shown before.

’If the gap between Rank 6 and Rank 7 is so big, then what about Rank 8?’

Liliana was an Eight-Star Mage, equivalent to a Rank 8 Knight, in a way. Yet this woman easily dealt with a Seven-Star Mage and threw him who knows where, all while fighting a Rank 6 Mage like Selena. There was also Roland, a Rank 6 Mage who specialised in defense.

The Red Lily fought all of them with ease, having a one-sided advantage. This was the prowess of an Eight-Star Mage, someone sitting just one rank below the ceiling of this Continent.

’Then what about Rank 9? Or a Nine-Star Mage? Or... a Ninth Circle Soul Cultivator?’

He felt a shiver run down his spine. If even this much was enough to amaze him, he couldn’t even understand what those beings could do.

’They are Demi-Gods!’

As the realisation hit, a terrible headache assaulted him, as if someone was constantly hammering his soul. He almost stumbled back, but quickly regained his footing and cursed.

’Goddamnit! So even this is forbidden? Why doesn’t this come with a manual?’

This world was too dangerous, way more than he had ever realised growing up in a sheltered and caring home.

Shaking his head, he decided to focus on his surroundings to shift his attention. He didn’t want to pry too much into their matters now. But he now knew that Rank 9 was the rank of Demi-Gods.

’No wonder they decide the balance of this world. One move from them is enough to change the world itself.’

He also knew another thing. Liliana hadn’t shown her full power, which once again reminded him that the gap between each rank grew bigger, like a vast chasm, as one went higher.

Aegon wanted to shift his focus, and it was very easy to do so in his current situation. After all, Marvin and his children weren’t the only ones attacking them.

There were more than a thousand mercenaries besieging his mansion, each a veteran of their field. Even the weakest of them was at Rank 4 and the highest touched Rank 6.

The lineup was ridiculous and could shake even a nation’s army. Marvin must have spent a fortune to hire all these people, since a Noble couldn’t have his own army.

Despite all this, Aegon saw something incredible happening before his eyes. The mercenaries, all thousand of them, didn’t stand a chance against Red Viel.

Like an army risen from deathly shadows, the Red Viel swept the battle in a quick victory. Their title, Lotus of the Last Dawn, once again shone upon the world.

It had been more than sixteen years since they left the mercenary world, so perhaps the new mercenary groups had forgotten about them. But that didn’t mean anything to these deadly machines.

They were walking death back then and it was the same now. In fact, they were far stronger than their past selves, as they had trained harder than ever to protect their Boss.

The chance never truly came in the sixteen years since Aegon was protected well. But now things were different. A large group of enemies had come to kill their Boss. That was all they needed to hear to bring devastation upon their enemies.

It was a one-sided victory. Wherever the shadows moved, mercenaries fell. Even the Rank 6 fighters couldn’t do anything against the shadows.

The only thing the Red Viel regretted was not killing them, which would have been far easier. But the orders were not to kill them, so they had to comply.

Aegon wasn’t cruel enough to massacre more than a thousand people who didn’t have anything to do with this conflict. They were just hired swords, after all. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

But he also wasn’t benevolent enough to let them go without any consequences, so he planned to keep them alive for now and decide their punishment later on.

Anyone who dared to try to kill him and his family deserved far worse.

’Still, what is this madness? A group of ninety-six defeated more than a thousand people easily. And not just any thousand, but probably the best of the mercenary world.’

He was baffled to see their prowess, but was also happy since they were his dear friends, his subordinates who would protect him at any cost.

It felt good to know he was being protected by such a group all the time. After hearing about the Valerian prophecy, he cared about his life even more.

’But what do I do?’

Aegon planned to fight alongside them, of course. Sadly, the Red Viel was simply too efficient with their work, so he was left standing on the sidelines, commanding them from time to time since Hecte was busy somewhere else.

He wanted to help, but there was nothing to help with, which made him sigh in defeat.

"Disappointed you can’t fight?"
