99 Harrington & Co

"Here we are."

I smiled as the black sedan rolled to a stop outside the Harrington & Co building, one of New York's oldest financial institutions.

The building wasn't like the old men trying to blend in with the new kids but was an old man wearing his age with pride.

The building was well kept and it showed.

Jenny and I stepped out of the car, standing there as we gazed up at the building.

"Ready?" I asked, glancing at her.

She adjusted her blazer, her eyes focused on the door of the building. "As I'll ever be."

I almost groaned, having expected her to say I was born ready but I guess no one else but me actually lived in my own fantasy.

"Let's show them why Apex should be ours." She said as she began walking.

I followed her, liking the note of confidence in her voice. I had no idea if she was actually confident or faking it till she made it but it didn't matter. All that mattered was showing the people on the other side of the negotiation table our confidence.

Inside, we met Jenny's legal guys from Apex and a receptionist, one of several, greeted us and led the way to the boardroom.

The room had normal windows but was also well lit. At the middle of the room was a long mahogany table surrounded by high-backed chairs and hanging above the fireplace like a stern overseer was the portrait of the Harrington patriarch.

Five executives from Harrington & Co were already seated like the cast of villains for a blockbuster, their expressions ranging from politely curious to creepily calculating.

Sitting at the head of the table was Charles Harrington, the current CEO and third generation heir to the family legacy.

Already, from his emotionless blue eyes, I could tell this was one of those ruthless billionaires who hate dissident employees for breakfast.

"Mr. Voss, Ms. Voss." He greeted, standing to shake our hands. "Welcome to Harrington & Co."

"Thank you for having us." I said with a warm smile, matching his firm handshake. There was no need to not smile just because he wasn't smiling.

Jenny also shook his hand with a professional demeanor. I had to admit, it was fun seeing her this… proper.

After the formalities, we all settled into our seats. Charles leaned back slightly, folding his hands. "Let's go straight to the point."

Of course. I expected nothing less from the stone faced man.

"I understand you've come to discuss a counteroffer to what Jasmine Voss has presented. We're listening."

This was Jenny's show, not mine. So. I leaned back and watched.

"Our vision for this partnership is simple." Jenny began. "We want to position Harrington & Co as the financial backbone of Apex's next phase of growth."

"Jasmine may have offered you an opportunity to align with tradition, but we're offering a chance to innovate while preserving your legacy."

Smart choice of words. Appeal to his sense of pride without alienating his traditionalist roots.

"Go on." Charles said.

"Jasmine's deal relies on maintaining the status quo." Jenny continued. "But Apex needs more than that, even if she won't tell you that."

"It needs to adapt to the rapidly changing financial world. With our support, Harrington & Co can be at the forefront of that evolution. Our proposal includes a significant stake in Apex's expansion initiatives, giving you both influence and profitability."

I leaned forward. It was time for me to build on Jenny's momentum. "We're also prepared to offer terms that mitigate risk for your firm."

I nodded seriously. "Unlike Jasmine's offer, which is heavily tied to fluctuating markets, our deal includes fixed returns over the first three years. It's a safety net that ensures stability while opening doors to exponential growth."

One of the executives, an older man wearing glasses, leaned forward. "And what about control? Jasmine has made it clear that she's willing to cede certain operational liberties to ensure this partnership aligns with our interests."

"Control is negotiable." I said. "But we believe in collaboration, not micromanagement. Our goal is to empower Harrington & Co to play a key role in shaping Apex's future. To put it simply, you'd be partners, not just financiers."

Charles' eyes flicked between Jenny and I, studying us with a blank expression on his face. "Your proposal is certainly… interesting."

"But as you know, partnerships like this are as much about trust as they are about numbers. So, I'll ask the question. Why should we trust you over Jasmine?"

Jenny smiled confidently at the question. "Because we're here to secure a legacy. Jasmine might offer short-term gains but with us, you're building a future that lasts."

There was a beat of silence before Charles inclined his head slightly. "You've given us much to consider. We'll need time to deliberate on it."

"Of course." I said, rising from my chair. "Take all the time you need. We're confident you'll see the value in what we're offering."

We exchanged polite goodbyes and soon, Jenny and I were back in the car, on our way home.

We sat in silence, watching the streets go by until Jenny finally broke it. "Do you think we made the right choice?" She asked.

I glanced at her with a smile on my face. "It doesn't matter."

She frowned before sighing. "I guess you're right."

"We're not signing the deal either way." I said, shrugging. "But by positioning ourselves, we force Jasmine to either increase her offer, overextending herself, or leave the deal entirely. Either way, we win."

Jenny chuckled at my words, focusing back on the streets outside. "Have I told you you're a bit scary, Nico?"

"No, you haven't." I grinned.

She said nothing for a moment before speaking. "I was never interested in the Voss empire, so I found it hard to understand why my sisters hated you. To me, my reasons were valid. You were weak. But their reasons…" She trailed off.

I waited in silence and after a long silence, she continued her words.

"Now, I understand. They didn't hate you. They were afraid of you. Because if Logan changes his mind about you, only you get to inherit the empire."

"And now, I pity them." She laughed. "They don't know what's coming for them."

Silence filled the car once more, the both of us lost in our own thoughts.

Minutes later, the car pulled up to Jenny's apartment.

"This is me." She said, smiling at me.

"See you, Jenny." I returned her smile. "And don't forget about our meeting with Amelia Ward. That's where we need to be ready."

"Nico?" She grinned at me. "I was born ready."

I grinned at her words as she stepped out of the car and gave me a small wave before disappearing inside the building.

As the driver pulled away, I leaned back against the leather seat with a deep sigh. One battle down, countless more to go.

My phone buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out to see Elsa's name on the screen.

"Elsa." I greeted, holding the phone to my ear.

"Nico." She said. She was already back in Crownsborough and had been working on something I needed. "I've sent the report. It should be in your inbox now."

"Excellent." I grinned. She did work fast. "Thanks, Elsa."

The call ended, and I retrieved my tablet from the seat beside me.

Opening my email, I found the report waiting for me. The report that will decide if I'll win the first battle of the war or not.
