Chapter 1846: A Different World

Two years had passed since that cryptic, emotionally charged conversation between Gary and his father in the heart of the woods. In the immediate aftermath, Gary had tried everything in his power to get the answers he deserved.

He had cornered his father, asking him about the mysterious name Talen, but Dean had remained a fortress of silence. His lips were sealed with a finality that Gary couldn’t break, and before long, the opportunity to ask vanished entirely.

The family camping trip had been the last time Gary had ever seen his father. Shortly after they returned to civilization, Dean had disappeared without a trace.

Gary had used every resource at his disposal, every contact within the Howlers, every scrap of information from the Underworld, and every supernatural sense he possessed, to track him down. It was all for nothing.

Eventually, Gary had to accept the bitter truth: his father didn’t want to be found. Whether Dean was hiding to protect them or pursuing his own mission to change the destiny he had read about, he had chosen to vanish into the shadows once again.

Although Gary tried to rationalize his father’s departure as a sacrifice for the greater good, it didn’t stop the stinging feeling of being abandoned for a second time.

However, as the months bled into years, the immediate worries that had once plagued Gary’s life began to settle. The world itself was undergoing a massive, fundamental shift in the wake of the Unzoku crisis.

The era of the Underworld ruling the cities was coming to a close. The "Non-Lethal Weapons Act," which had once defined the limitations of civilian and gang conflict, was completely abolished.

This allowed for high-grade weaponry to return to the hands of the authorities, and the government moved quickly to reclaim the control they had lost.

National armies and specialized military personnel were deployed in a massive crackdown on gang activity. The government worked to stabilize the country, absorbing some of the larger syndicates into official structures and dismantling the rest. The system where the Underworld held the keys to the cities simply ceased to exist.

Gary, ever the forward-thinking leader, saw the writing on the wall. The Howlers, as a paramilitary gang, were formally disbanded. But Gary and Kai didn’t simply leave their people to fend for themselves in a world that no longer had a place for them. Instead, they executed a brilliant pivot, converting the skills of their members into legitimate, thriving businesses.

They established a premier private security firm, utilizing the discipline and combat prowess of the former Howlers to provide protection for high-profile clients during the chaotic transition of power.

This was only the beginning. They funded sports clubs to channel the energy of their younger members, opened high-end restaurants, and set up specialized investment funds to ensure that every person who had fought by Gary’s side had the guidance and the capital to achieve their own dreams.

The core members of the pack finally found the peace they had bled for. Innu returned to his true passion, working full-time at his orphanage, providing a stable future for children who had lost everything.

Austin and Vera realized their dream of opening a high-performance mechanic shop, where they could focus on their love for machines rather than weapons of war. Marie and Kai combined their analytical minds to open a specialized law firm, handling the complex legalities of the new world order. For every Howler who had served the pack, the reward was a life of their own choosing.

But the bonds of the pack weren’t so easily broken. While they no longer patrolled the streets as a gang, they remained a family. Regular meetups and boisterous get-togethers were a staple of their lives, usually centered at the Wolf’s pool club.

Despite the surface-level peace, with no vampire incidents, no werewolf rampages, and no gang wars, they never truly let their guard down. They all continued to train in their own time, keeping their bodies sharp and their senses honed. They lived with the constant, underlying knowledge that peace was a fragile thing, and they had to be ready for the day it might inevitably break.

In the city of Slough, the pinnacle of luxury was the Cippen Hotel. One afternoon, a pair of elegantly dressed guests pulled up to the front entrance, clearly intending to celebrate a special occasion. However, before they could even ascend the grand marble stairs to reach the lobby, a line of security personnel dressed in sharp, black suits stepped forward, placing firm hands on their chests to halt their progress.

“We’re incredibly sorry,” the lead guard stated with professional coldness. “But the hotel is completely booked out for today. There are no rooms available, and we must suggest you find accommodations elsewhere.”

“Oh, the rooms don’t matter to us,” the man replied, gesturing to the lady on his arm. “We’re just here for the rooftop restaurant. We don’t need to stay the night.”

“I’m sorry, sir,” the guard repeated, his stance unyielding. “The entire hotel, every room, every facility, and the rooftop restaurant, has been booked for a private event. No outsiders are permitted on the premises. We suggest you come back tomorrow.”

“What? That has to be a lie!” the man began to yell, his face flushing with indignation. “The whole building is booked out? Who the heck would have the kind of money or influence to pull off something like that for a private party?”

His shouting was so loud that passersby began to turn their heads, but as the man looked around, he noticed something that silenced him instantly. There were far more security personnel standing at the edges of the property than he had initially realized. They weren’t just standing; they were waiting for something.

Then, the low, rhythmic rumble of heavy engines echoed from the street behind them. The man turned around to see a convoy of several large, armored black SUVs heading toward the hotel. They moved with a practiced, military precision, turning into the inner circle of the driveway with an air of absolute authority.

The man stared at the tinted windows of the lead vehicle, his anger replaced by a sudden, shivering curiosity. “Just what the heck is going on here?”
