The boss didn’t attack first.

It waited — with Kai’s guard stance, feet at the correct angle, weight distributed sixty-forty, arms at chest height.

Perfectly still.

Waiting.

Kai looked at it.

’It’s doing what I do.’

’Waiting for the opponent to move first to read the initiation pattern.’

’If I wait too, neither of us moves.’

’So I move first.’

’Which means it reads my initiation.’

’Which means I already know it’ll read my initiation.’

’And that changes how I initiate.’

’And now I’ve confused myself...’

Kai threw a jab.

To read the boss’s response.

The same assessment jab he’d used against Lira in the guild.

The boss deflected it with two fingers.

Outward. Slightly descending angle.

Exactly like Lira.

Kai stopped.

’The labyrinth learned from me fighting.’

’But I fought against Lira.’

’And Lira fought against me too.’

’The boss doesn’t just have my stance.’

’It has Lira’s defense.’

’Could it be the labyrinth is using what it learned from the girls to use against me?’

The boss followed him.

Its weight shifted toward the side where Kai had started to move, cutting the angle before it was completed.

’Anticipation of my movement before I complete it.’

’That’s what Lira did. She read the start of the movement, not the movement itself.’

’Against Lira I used Qi to make the initiation different from the movement.’

’Same applies here.’

Kai launched the side kick — the initiation identical to the level 3 combination with the creatures, the same hip angle that preceded the movement.

The boss adjusted its weight to block the side kick.

Kai didn’t complete the kick.

He used the kick’s initiation as a pivot and launched his right elbow from the other angle — the movement the boss’s stance now had uncovered because it had committed its weight to blocking the kick that didn’t come.

The elbow connected with the side.

The boss went one step to the right.

The boss didn’t take the side step as a retreat.

It used it — the momentum of the step to the right became the start of a pivot, and the pivot brought its left arm in a horizontal arc covering exactly the space where Kai would be.

Kai saw it coming.

Didn’t dodge — absorbed. Right forearm crossed, the block angle directed upward to redirect the boss’s arm above instead of stopping it.

The boss’s arm passed high.

Kai entered the space that opened.

Palm strike to the chest — center, the point that had worked against the S-rank vampires in the catacombs.

The boss stepped back two paces.

The black material of its surface showed a fracture at the impact point.

’Concentrated physical damage works.’

’Same as Serah. Same as Lira.’

’Qi in the strike amplifies the damage.’

’If I concentrate Qi at the palm point and transmit it inward instead of outward...’

’Resonant Impact.’

’But this time knowing exactly what I’m doing.’

Kai initiated the next exchange differently.

Not an assessment jab. Not a fake-initiation kick.

He stood still.

The boss waited — with Lira’s defense active, weight perfectly distributed, reading the initiation.

Kai gave no initiation.

He went straight — no preparation, no prior movement for the boss to read. Just his body going forward with Qi concentrated at the contact point of his right shoulder from the moment he took the first step.

The boss adjusted late — it had been reading an initiation that never came.

Kai’s shoulder struck the boss’s chest with Resonant Impact active.

The existing fracture expanded inward.

The light point inside the boss — which Kai hadn’t seen until that moment because it was covered by the intact material — flickered.

’There’s the core.’

’Same principle Serah found in her level 4.’

’If I could reach the core directly...’

The boss counterattacked — two quick strikes in sequence, Lira’s pattern from the physical exchanges in the guild.

Kai blocked them.

The second landed on his left shoulder and moved him a step back.

’Strong. The combination of Lira’s style with the fortress material’s mass is heavier than Lira alone.’

’But the fracture is there.’

’And the core is behind the fracture.’
