"I’m sorry," I said again, because I felt I had to. "For everything. For the courtyard. For not telling you sooner about... us. About Adrien. I know I broke what we had. I know I can’t just waltz back in and act like it didn’t happen."

Ethan studied me for a long moment, his eyes steady. "You did break something," he said softly. "And yeah, it still hurts. But right now? What matters is making sure we don’t end up like Logan. Everything else? We can sort out later. Or not. But we can’t solve anything if we’re dead."

His bluntness took my breath away for a second. Then I nodded, my throat tight.

Before I left, Ethan walked me to the door and paused with his hand on the knob, looking down at me with the same intense gaze I’d fallen for months ago.

"Stay at Gigi’s," he urged firmly. "Don’t go back to the house. Not until we know more. If Keith figures out you overheard him, if he even suspects...he won’t hesitate. He’s already shown that."

The gravity of his words sank in as he said them. I felt the chill run down my spine again, sharper this time. "You really think he’d...?"

"I think he killed my uncle to keep a secret," Ethan replied simply. "I think he’d do whatever it takes to bury another one."

He opened the door, and the cold night air rushed in, sharper than before, bringing tiny flecks of snow that stung my cheeks.

"When this all blows over...if it does..." I began, not even sure of how to put the jumbled mess that was my thoughts into words. "We should talk, about...the three of us. I know what I did was wrong and... frankly...um, weird. With me you know falling for my own stepbrother... Adrien."

"Yeah." Ethan agreed, "it was infact weird finding out my competition for your affection was Adrien of all people."

I winced...but he was right. "Yeah...I was quite shocked myself when I realized my feelings...I thought I was going insane. Falling for someone who used to bully me and someone I’m kinda related to."

Ethan chuckled, the sound warmed me up faster than any heater or furnace.

"There’s a lot I need to explain...I don’t expect you to just forgive me. It’s just, you mean a lot to me. And my feelings for Adrien never once affected the love I feel for you. The break between us made me realize my feelings properly, so I’m not all that confused at all about my heart anymore...I still really care for you, Ethan."

And I meant it, because the break as well as Gigi’s advice...helped me understand that...yes, one can fall for two people. It’s just how that person navigates and deals with those feelings that really matters.

Although...I had already quite fucked up on that part.

I just hope there was still hope in savaging whatever was left between all of us...even if it all ended in strictly friendship.

There was a long beat of silence after my word vomit, but he let out a small...yet sad smile.

"Be careful," he said quietly. "And text me when you get to Gigi’s. Just so I know."

I nodded, my throat too tight to reply.

Stepping out onto the porch, I pulled my hood up against the wind and started walking. The street was empty, the snow falling thicker now, covering my footprints almost as soon as I made them. Every house light I passed felt like it was watching me, and every shadow seemed darker than it should have been.

Behind me, Ethan’s porch light stayed on until I turned the corner.

Ahead, the long, dark walk back to Gigi’s stretched out, carrying a secret that had a name now.

Keith.

And the heavy realization that knowing the truth didn’t make us any safer.

It just made us targets.

3RD PERSON POV

The courtyard at Willow Haven High had that quiet vibe typical of late winter afternoons, when most of the snow had turned into muddy slush along the edges of the paths and the bare branches up above still felt the remnants of ice.

Students wandered in loose groups between classes, their chatter filled with the usual mix of gossip and laughter, but Adrien wasn’t really paying attention to any of it. He was focused on one spot across the open area: Noah and Ethan were huddled near the large stone steps leading up to the library.

They were standing closer than they had in weeks, their heads bent together as if sharing secrets rather than just having a casual chat. Noah’s hands fidgeted, twisting the strap of his backpack, while Ethan listened intently, a sharp focus in his demeanor that Adrien had always envied and felt bitter about.

Their expressions were serious, almost anxious, like they were deep in a private conversation rather than the light-hearted banter typical in the school.

Adrien slowed his pace without even realizing it, the cold air cutting into the bare skin of his wrists where his sleeves had rolled up. He tried to convince himself that his curiosity was just natural, that he had every right to want to know why Noah, after days of silence and dodging his calls and messages, had suddenly found his words with Ethan again.

But that curiosity didn’t explain the heavy, tight feeling settling in his chest.

As he started to approach them, the conversation abruptly stopped.

Both of their heads snapped up at the same time.

Noah immediately tensed, shoulders pulling tight under his hoodie. Ethan’s expression turned hard, the easy friendliness he’d just shown to Noah vanishing behind a wall of guarded hostility.

For a moment, they just stared at him...two boys caught in something private and Adrien felt a weight of realization settle on him: whatever they were talking about, it clearly didn’t involve him, and they weren’t planning to include him.

He forced a casual expression, even though it made his jaw ache.

"Am I interrupting something?" he asked, keeping his tone light.

Noah opened his mouth, searching for an answer. "No, we were just—"

"Talking," Ethan cut in, his tone flat and final.

Adrien glanced between them, feeling the tension stretch across the few feet that separated them. Noah looked guilty; Ethan looked ready to fight him if Adrien tried anything stupid.

"Well," Adrien said slowly, letting it linger, "you two seem pretty busy lately."
