Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1137 - 1132: Quietly Sneaking into the Guest Room in the Dark
It’s a good thing it wasn’t this car that got scratched that day, otherwise this jerk wouldn’t be so easy to deal with.
Before shutting the car door, Evander called out to Sophia, "Little Pepper, what are you standing there for, come here!"
Sophia sighed, walked over, and sat in the passenger seat.
Inside the revolving door of the club, the couples Nicholas Croft and Nathan Moore watched Evander’s sports car drive away before they both came out.
Sophie Foster was bundled up by Nicholas like a huge dumpling, with a furry hat and a scarf around her neck, only revealing her eyes, as she watched the direction Evander left and said, "Looks like Uncle Evander is serious this time, he actually spent so much to woo a girl."
"Evander is really serious this time, he stayed at the company all afternoon yesterday," Titus Zane gossiped over Nathan and Sophie.
"Oh? Really? Sister Zane, quickly tell me, what’s going on?"
Talking about gossip, Sophie instantly perked up and was no longer tired or sleepy, her eyes gleaming with curiosity. As she was about to lean towards Titus, Nicholas wrapped her back up.
"Alright, let’s go home and rest first, tomorrow Sister Zane can come to our place and chat about gossip."
"Oh," Sophie responded reluctantly, and Titus was also pulled back by Nathan. The two gossip-loving women had to wave goodbye to each other over the two men.
In the luxury car, Sophia looked Evander up and down several times, unwilling to believe he was the kind who could afford a luxury car.
Noticing Sophia’s gaze fixed on him, Evander looked at the road ahead with a smile and asked, "Little Pepper, why do you keep staring at me? Have you been charmed by my handsome looks?"
"Pfft, narcissist!" Sophia sneered disdainfully; she’s seen narcissism before, but never someone so shamelessly full of themselves.
"I am quite charming, but not smelly, smell if you don’t believe me!" Evander grinned, stretching an arm in front of Sophia, who disdainfully pushed it away, "Get that away, drive properly!"
"What, worried about an accident?" Evander retracted his arm, laughing. Just after he said that, Sophia lowered her head and spat several times, then glared at him unhappily, "Jinx, I knew I shouldn’t have taken your ride!"
Amused by Sophia’s superstitious nature, Evander furrowed his brow and said with a smirk, "Don’t worry, I’m very fond of my life. Imagine me, Evander, at the prime age of thirty, never slept with a woman, never had a girlfriend, wouldn’t want to waste such good genes!"
"Narcissist!" Sophia sneered again, more disdainful of Evander, a thirty-year-old man claiming he’s never slept with a woman or had a girlfriend—who’d believe that!
"Narcissism requires capital," Evander continued, "Someone like me, a high-quality single ’golden bachelor,’ is the object of many women’s desires..."
"Ugh..." Sophia exaggeratedly covered her mouth as if to gag, causing Evander to chuckle again. He glanced at her and then, in a relaxed tone, asked, "What do you think of my proposal this afternoon?"
"What proposal?" Sophia, her hand still covering her mouth, looked at Evander cluelessly. He smiled and said, "About being my girlfriend, I meant it sincerely."
Sophia...
She looked at Evander’s profile, saying nothing, but from his casual tone, she couldn’t see the slightest sincerity.
This man seemed so frivolous, he tricked her into her first kiss the first time they met, and the second time he...
Remembering all of Evander’s bad behavior made Sophia angry. Her car being towed might be his doing!
"Hey, was it you who had my car towed?"
Sophia asked casually, not expecting Evander to glance over with a smile and say, "Clever."
Sophia...
"Bastard! Why did you do that!" She had to pay to get her car back, and worse, she would have to squeeze onto the bus for work tomorrow!
"To create an opportunity for us to be alone!"
If it weren’t for safety concerns, Sophia would have pounced and torn him apart!
Seeing Evander’s smug profile, Sophia simply turned her head back, leaned on the seat back, and closed her eyes, deciding to ignore him.
This kind of jerk, talking more with him is self-torture!
Sophia’s reaction was just what Evander wanted. The luxury car had already entered the downtown area, and in just over ten minutes, they’d be at her apartment.
Sophia was busy sulking with Evander, leaning against the seat with her eyes closed, ignoring the road, until the car stopped. Evander unbuckled his seatbelt and smiled, "We’re home." Only then did she groggily open her eyes.
Looking around at the unfamiliar surroundings, she puzzled, "Which building is my home?"
Evander was amused by her bemused look, "You’ll know once you get out."
Sophia unbuckled her seatbelt, groggily got out of the luxury car, looked up at the towering building, and then realized.
"Bastard, where is this? Where did you bring me? I want to go home!"
"Come on, don’t make a fuss, it’s the middle of the night, you’d rather not disturb the neighbors," Evander said, walking over and wrapping an arm around Sophia’s shoulders, like some brotherly gesture, leading her towards his apartment. Sophia knew that causing a scene in a residential area late at night was unethical, so she struggled while scolding him softly, "Let go of me, I want to go home!"
"Stop messing around, look at the time," Evander helplessly paused, casually rolling up the sleeve of his down jacket and showing his watch to Sophia.
On the luminous dial, the short hand was between one and two o’clock. Sophia licked her lips and asked, "Can I get a cab around here?"
Evander shook his head, looking innocent.
After hesitating, Sophia tentatively said, "So... can I borrow your car... to drive back?"
"No." Evander Lancaster refused firmly, "The car was just brought in and I haven’t bought insurance yet." The implication was that if it got scratched or hit, he would have to pay for the repairs himself.
Facing Evander’s innocent look, Sophia Hamilton steeled herself and took out her phone from her coat pocket. They were probably in the city now, so getting a car should be easy.
"Come on, grandma, don’t make a fuss. My place is right up there. Stay over for the night, I won’t do anything to you!"
"Hmph!" Sophia snorted, shot a glance at Evander, and turned to leave.
Watching Sophia’s departing figure, Evander asked teasingly, "What? Afraid? Aren’t you usually tough? So you’re just a paper tiger, huh?"
"Who are you calling a paper tiger?" Sophia halted and turned around. Evander, his trick succeeding, dug his hands into his casual pants pockets and continued baiting her, "Of course, it’s you. What, are you worried I might take advantage of you if you come up?"
"Tch! With you?!" Sophia scoffed dismissively, and Evander quickly pressed on, "Since you’re not afraid, why not come up with me?"
Sophia...
"It’s too late, I don’t want to disturb your family."
"It’s fine, no disturbance. My only family is standing right here in front of you."
Evander laughed and came over, grabbing Sophia’s wrist and leading her towards his apartment door.
Sophia was forced to follow behind him, struggling and protesting, "Let go, I want to go home..."
"Stop making a fuss, you can’t catch a car here!" Evander sternly reprimanded.
Sophia...
"Really?"
"Why would I lie to you?"
Sophia looked back, unsure if the neighborhood was too big or too remote. She hadn’t seen a single passing vehicle for a while. Resigned, she sighed and asked.
"Are you sure there’s no one else at your place?"
"No one, I live alone in a single apartment."
"Then... how many rooms are there inside?"
"Two rooms."
Hearing this from Evander, Sophia felt reassured.
...
Standing at the entrance, Sophia hesitated to step inside, afraid she might dirty the apartment.
Evander’s single apartment wasn’t particularly luxurious, but it was astonishingly clean.
The sofa and coffee table were cream-colored, even the curtains in the living room were light-colored. The floor tiles were spotless, and even the slippers offered were brand new and pristine.
"Why are you just standing there? Come in." Evander hung up the coat and then headed towards a door.
Sophia hesitated, slipped out of her snow boots, and shuffled into the room in a pair of large men’s slippers, standing in the living room with her hands awkwardly rubbing together.
Evander came out of the bathroom, looking at her puzzled, "Why aren’t you sitting down?"
"Your... place is so clean, I..."
"Silly girl!" Evander laughed helplessly as he walked over, asking, "Do you want a shower?"
Sophia shook her head, "Where do I sleep?"
Evander sat down on the couch and pointed to the room inside, smiling enigmatically, "The room on the left is the guest room, the right is my room. You can choose whichever you like."
Before Evander finished speaking, Sophia was already heading towards the room, choosing the guest room on the left. She gently pushed the door open and peeked inside.
"The light switch for the chandelier is on the left side." Evander’s voice came from the living room.
Sophia flicked the switch, revealing a large bed in the center of the bedroom, with lake blue sheets matching the curtains.
Taking a deep breath, Sophia entered and locked the door behind her, shed her coat and jeans, and slipped under the covers.
"So comfortable..." Sophia sighed in contentment; the mattress and quilt were so soft, much more comfortable than her own at home by miles.
It was already two in the morning, and lying in bed, it wasn’t long before Sophia fell asleep.
Outside the guest room, in the living room, Evander came out of the shower in a bathrobe, patting his damp short hair dry with a towel, then quietly approached the guest room door, lightly pressing his ear to it. Hearing nothing, he smirked slightly, then turned and opened the opposite room’s door.
Soon, Evander came back out, now holding a key.
One hand grasping the handle, he gently inserted the key into the lock. With a crisp sound, the lock clicked open, and the guest room door was pushed open slightly.
In the darkness, the man in the bathrobe quietly entered the guest room, looking at the woman peacefully asleep on the bed, a satisfied, conspiratorial smile playing at the corners of his lips...
