Chapter 2023: Chapter 2023: A Nightmare

The accumulated rainwater descended from the sky like waves, crashing onto the train with a roar. The train, compressed and deformed, swayed left and right on the tracks with the water current, and soon floated as if immersed in a boundless ocean—however, in reality, the heavy rain from the sky had formed a water domain, neatly wrapping the tracks along with the train, creating, from an outside perspective, something akin to a transparent swimming pool in space.

Of course, the players inside the train quickly extricated themselves from the pool. The train had already been invaded by rainwater, forcing all players to retreat onto the tracks and look at the train completely submerged in water. Everyone was astounded; the fact that insects could transform into rainwater was absurd enough, yet they could freely assemble to such a massive scale!

Players stood near the train, whether high or low, close or far, none dared to discard their defense props, all intensely focused on the still surging water waves.

"They look so calm," a female player muttered.

It’s hard to imagine this entire water domain is made up of insects.

"We can’t let them continue breeding," the Red Scarf decisively said, immediately throwing all the purchased insecticides and other potions toward the train—ordinary insecticides might not match the effect of poisons, but using poisons could backfire, so a consensus was reached among the players before taking action.

The colorful insecticides exploded in the water. There seemed to be some effect, as the water near the players began to collapse, and large amounts surged toward the surroundings, gradually flooding the grass on both sides of the tracks. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

But before the players could rejoice, more water gushed out from the ground, climbing like a fountain and occupying the space near the tracks. In an instant, it surged dozens of feet high, resembling a real tidal wave crashing toward all the players!

Xu Huo swiftly stacked defense props on himself, including "Spatial Sphere," "Auto-Adhesive Film," and "Undaunted Martyr Substitute." Using spatial power, he set up several layers of cubic barriers around. Just as he braced himself for the impact of the giant wave, the incoming water seemed to suddenly reduce in force, neither breaching the spatial barrier nor making him feel any impact. But in the next second, he was enveloped by an unseen force, his head and feet abruptly inverted, causing dizziness as he hurriedly adjusted his posture, only to get a sudden lift from underfoot.

Instinctively leaning forward, Xu Huo found himself still seated in the train when he opened his eyes, with intact carpet underfoot. The faint sound of the train and light coming in from outside indicated the train was still safely running.

"...Evolution species experiment interrupted." In a daze, he heard a mechanical voice by his ear. He quickly looked up toward the position of the triplets but only managed to catch them leaving the train with boxes!

Then, other players gradually woke up from their slumber, staring in shock and confusion at the situation on the train.

The train was intact without damage; players drowned or dissected were still alive, except for those five with boxes who were gone.

The train remained silent for a long time until someone spoke up, "Did we enter an instance or have a collective nightmare?"

Many instinctively glanced at the deceased players; whether drowned, self-inflicted, or killed by others, they all experienced a vivid death!

"What’s going on?" The fortune-teller female player instinctively sought answers from Xu Huo, but paused just as she started, for if they had merely slept through it on the train, then everything experienced wasn’t real, making past words and deeds hard to discern as true or false.

Xu Huo was equally bewildered; he clearly sensed interference from psychic power during the previous event, but it felt inadequate to collectively induce hallucinations among advanced players. Besides, "death" is an event with absolute impact, making the players killed fail to awaken timely quite abnormal, more so was his failure to notice anything amiss!

Though glimpsing the disparity between vision and reality when hitting the final wave, he didn’t realize the falseness of his surroundings before waking.

"Evolution species experiment"? What evolution species?

His nose felt hot; instinctively pulling out a handkerchief, he found the front of his clothing soaked with blood.

After a pause, he wiped the fresh blood off his nose and mouth, got up to clean in the restroom.

Washing his face, he looked at himself in the mirror, long afflicted by headaches, he looked weary with bloodshot eyes. Perhaps losing too much blood, his complexion was pale, and his lips faded.

"Is it the aftereffects influencing judgment or does the game inherently have evolution species capable of inducing seamless hallucinations?"

This reminded him of the video material received from Zone 017, where someone filmed experimental species, one even affecting the viewer’s mental state.

The experiment forced to halt; it must have failed, right...

"Still not out?" The fortune-teller female player knocked on the door outside.

Xu Huo turned off the water and opened the door, asking grimly, "Anything?"

"Your reaction’s a bit extreme." The fortune-teller female player hastily retreated a step, "We were allies in the dream..."

Seeing his grim expression, she hurriedly added, "Since no one’s lost their memory, our experiences should be similar. You’re aware of my characteristics; although I can’t accurately predict longevity, I have a divination trait. I just divined for you, you better not go home soon."

"What do you mean?" Xu Huo frowned.

"The divination result is as such, returning home is ill-omened and might bring disaster to family." The fortune-teller female player thought and added, "Though divination is not foresight, its results relate to one’s luck. Luck is uncertain, seemingly destined in the unseen; the principles are unclear, but seeing you as a decent person, I broke the rules to inform you."

"Take it as good advice, don’t think I’m cursing you."

Xu Huo stared at her, then after a moment handed over a casually grabbed Rank-B prop, "Thank you."

The fortune-teller female player waved her hand, "I’m not after gains, merely find you pleasing. But if you truly wish to thank me..."

She stepped forward, closing the distance between them, and lightly traced a finger on his clothing, "Don’t be so rigid, we could have a deeper interaction."

Xu Huo gripped her arm, placed the prop into her hand.

The fortune-teller female player didn’t appear disappointed, taking the prop and stepping back, "I’m about to reach my stop; hope we meet in-game again."

A few minutes later, Xu Huo stood at the station in Zone 011.
