Inner Thoughts Exposed: Reborn General's Farming Daughter Has a System
Chapter 46: Blooming Business
Xiao Yuyan began to understand their mother’s intention. Besides thanking their neighbours, she was also promoting their product.
Their current price, one copper coin for a cup, was also still acceptable for them, considering the bad harvest that had been happening lately.
"Mother, I told them we are selling the soybean drink at the village market..." Xiao Yuxi added.
Zhou Anran nodded. "They can come to our stall if they want to buy the soybean drink."
Once the soy milk cooled down a little, they put them inside the ceramic jugs. This time, they were bringing eight jugs instead of just four.
They wanted to make more, but Zhou Anran was against it. She began to teach them not to be greedy. "If we make too much and the drink isn’t sold in time, it will go bad."
If they want to open their stall in the afternoon, they would need to make another fresh batch. Their current morning batch would already be spoiled by then.
They lowered their heads and began to reflect on themselves, listening to their mother’s words carefully.
Once they were ready, Zhou Anran led her children to the village market. She and Xiao Yuxi brought two jugs while Xiao Fenghao brought four.
Xiao Yuyan was quite helpless about her own strength, but there was nothing much she could do about it. And thus, she was tasked with taking care of her little sister again, and she wasn’t unwilling either.
"Xiao girl, where are your scented sachets?" Some people were puzzled when they saw several cups of drink on the table.
"Sorry, Auntie. My sister and I haven’t made another batch of scented sachets," Xiao Yuyan explained.
The woman could only express her disappointment. "That’s a pity. I want to buy your scented sachet. When will your next batch be ready? Make sure to save one for me."
Xiao Yuyan agreed with her request. Unfortunately, the woman directly left after she asked about scented sachets and didn’t get what she wanted.
Several other people came up to them, each asking for scented sachets. Xiao Yuyan and Xiao Yuxi patiently explained to them.
For the first hour, no one bought their drink. However, having experienced yesterday’s episode, they became more patient, waiting for today’s first customer.
Besides the travelling merchants who usually lived in the inn, there were also middlemen who would buy goods from their village farmers or the village market. They would resell the items at the town or county’s market with higher prices.
Because of the recent situation—famine rampaging in other areas in the Great Yuan Dynasty—the travelling merchants were generally richer.
They had the means of transportation, selling the purchased goods to famine-stricken areas at much higher prices. Hence, for certain crops like rice, most farmers prefer selling them to the travelling merchants.
Xiao Qingya fanned herself with a fan. The temperature had risen as the time approached noon.
Gradually, they received more customers from the tired and thirsty farmers who had come to sell their harvest. Before the time hit noon, they finally sold all of their soy milk.
The family returned home and came back in the afternoon to sell another batch.
Su Wan also visited their stall again, unhesitatingly ordering two cups. "Anran, two cups for me!"
She took one cup away, and soon returned. She let out a comfortable sigh as she drank the other cup. Without anyone asking, she began to explain.
"I sent the other one to my husband. I wanted him to get a taste yesterday, but it was all sold out before I could get another cup! Your drink is quite unique, Anran."
Zhou Anran politely thanked her for her praise.
Once Su Wan finished her drink, she put a few copper coins on the table as payment.
Zhou Anran blinked and grabbed the copper coins, intending to return some of them. Su Wan had given them ten copper coins, which was five times the original price.
"You paid too much." Zhou Anran told her, wondering if she had forgotten the price. "Here, take back the rest."
Su Wan shook her head. "Take it, Anran. Your drink is so smooth and refreshing in this hot afternoon, definitely worth that price."
Zhou Anran insisted a few times, and Su Wan kept on persuading her. In the end, Zhou Anran took the money while thanking her.
She had made a guess that Su Wan might be some travelling merchant’s daughter, and it seemed to be right—the woman was quite generous.
In the next few days, they were still selling soy milk. Ever since Xiao Qingya openly called it soy milk, they also began to use that term. The customers also followed the name, calling it soy milk.
Although their recent business was doing well, the Xiao family didn’t forget about their fields. They would often spend half a day in the fields and the other half selling soy milk.
Gradually, their product also became much more well-known. Every time they set up their stall, it would be sold out in less than two hours.
Zhou Anran wasn’t stingy with the money they earned from selling the soy milk. She gave each of her kids evenly, even Xiao Qingya who had given them the idea. However, for the little one, she specifically helped her to save the money.
The family had used quite some fund to invite Physician Li, renting the inn in the county, and other necessities. The money they earned for the past few days finally could cover all the expenses they had used.
In order to teach her kids not to be reckless with their spending, Zhou Anran deliberately didn’t give them a lot. She secretly also saved some for them.
Xiao Yuxi and Xiao Yuyan would need them for their dowry while Xiao Fenghao could use it to support his wife in the future.
Alas, their current peaceful business didn’t last long. There would always be people who were jealous of their current success.
As they were selling their soy milk again like usual, today, they encountered trouble.
