Inner Thoughts Exposed: Reborn General's Farming Daughter Has a System
Chapter 43: Selling Soy Milk
They went to a stall where they had previously used to sell their scented sachets. Noticeably, there were less people around. Their neighbouring stalls had begun to pack their things to return home.
Earlier, the scented sachets were all sold out. It had been a while since the twins started making their scented sachets again, so the demand became a lot higher.
However, although Xiao Yuxi wasn’t as quick-witted as her younger twin sister, she was someone who always repaid kindness.
When she spotted a few neighbours who had helped their family to search for Xiao Qingya a week ago, she gave them a few scented sachets for free.
"Xiao girl, why are you back?" Aunt Dong, the vegetable seller beside their stall, was puzzled when she saw Xiao Yuyan leading her little sister toward the stall.
Xiao Yuyan smiled and greeted her. "Aunt Dong."
The little one followed obediently. "Aunt Dong!"
Aunt Dong’s attention was instantly captured by Xiao Qingya fair and chubby cheeks. She wanted to touch her but refrained upon realizing that her hands were a little dirty.
In the end, she merely patted Xiao Qingya’s shoulder lightly. "Is this your little sister? She is already so big!"
"Sweet child, what is your name?" Aunt Dong asked in a gentle tone while shoving a pear she had taken out of her cloth bag.
Xiao Yuyan was helpless. She took the pear from the stunned Xiao Qingya, refusing politely. "Auntie, my little sister just ate. You should keep it for your family at home."
Aunt Dong mostly only sold vegetables, so Xiao Yuyan knew that she must have bought the pear from some stall somewhere.
"It’s just a pear." Aunt Dong already expected her move, and she dodged away nimbly. "Let your little sister eat it. It must have been hot on the way."
Xiao Yuyan could only accept the pear. In turn, she helped Aunt Dong pack her remaining unsold vegetables.
"Xiao girl, Little Ya, Aunt will go back first," Aunt Dong told them.
By the time Zhou Anran and others caught up, Aunt Dong was already gone. It all happened in a short few minutes. Xiao Yuyan felt it a pity they missed the chance for Aunt Dong to try the soy milk.
Because of the existence of the several inns, most of the remaining stalls were mostly selling snacks or meals for dinner.
The family of five crowded around, borrowing some stools from the nearby empty stalls. They waited for the curious people who were willing to try.
Some people thought they were selling milk and wanted to bargain for lower-priced milk, but as soon as they found out it wasn’t animal’s milk, they lost interest and walked away.
For an hour, they hadn’t sold any cups.
Xiao Qingya scrunched her little face. She never had any experience with doing business, so her knowledge was quite lacking.
At this point, she started to be anxious. Their family had used a lot of ingredients to make soy milk. If they can’t sell anything, wouldn’t they suffer a loss?
Suddenly, she realized how impulsive her idea was.
[Little Ya, don’t beat yourself over it. When you are doing business, the start is always rough, but your mother definitely knows a lot about the market.] The System consoled her.
The majority of the stalls were selling meals and snacks. Their family’s drink was definitely a creative variety for people who wanted to try something new and not just plain water.
Merchants were shrewd and curious people. There might be one or two who might be attracted to buy their drink if they saw something similar to milk but not milk. Moreover, the price was also several times lower than milk.
"What do you sell here?" A middle-aged woman came over and asked.
Xiao Qingya perked up, hoping it would be a customer who was willing to buy their product.
"Auntie, we are selling soybean drinks," Xiao Yuyan answered softly, stroking her little sister’s fluffy head to calm her down.
"Soybean drinks?" The middle-aged woman’s expression cracked, and her face turned unpleasant. "You are selling the water you used to wash your beans and pretending it’s milk? Are you trying to deceive innocent people?"
They were displeased by the middle-aged woman’s words, but they held themselves from scolding her back.
"Auntie, my sister already explained it’s made of soybean, so it’s not animal’s milk," Xiao Yuxi suppressed her irritation.
The middle-aged woman’s eyes darted around, and as she took one step closer to the stall, the fat in her body jiggled slightly as she moved.
Zhou Anran studied the middle-aged woman silently, finding her to become increasingly familiar. She might have been someone who was related to a family from their village.
"What kind of drink is it? Give me one to taste," she demanded. "I want to see if it’s good or not."
"How many cups do you want? It’s one copper coin per cup," Zhou Anran explained to her their price.
"One copper coin for washing water? Are you robbing people?" The middle-aged woman retorted angrily. "Let me try first and I will decide whether I want to buy it."
Xiao Fenghao wanted to stand up in annoyance at such an outrageous request. Knowing her second brother very well, Xiao Yuyan grabbed his arm and shook her head. He could only stay on his stool and took a few deep breaths.
Zhou Anran calmly answered, "You can try one cup."
The middle-aged woman curled up her lips triumphantly. Without hesitation, she snatched one cup. The soy milk from the cup spilled into the stall’s table, creating some mess.
Xiao Yuxi gritted her teeth, pulling a cloth to wipe away the mess.
The middle-aged woman made an obvious gulping sound as she drank the soy milk. At first, she was skeptical, and soon, her eyes widened. She put the cup down once she finished.
"Would you like to buy our soybean drink, Auntie?" Xiao Yuyan offered, wearing her most patient expression.
The middle-aged woman snorted, and she shook her head. Her hand reached out for another cup.
"One cup isn’t enough for me to taste. Give me another one for free."
