Inner Thoughts Exposed: Reborn General's Farming Daughter Has a System
Chapter 40: Harvesting Soybeans
Unfortunately, Xiao Qingya was still too short. She could only grab a few soybeans. The rest were too high.
"Harvest it?" She asked Xiao Yuyan.
Xiao Yuyan already knew that the System had confirmed the soybeans were ready for harvest. Still, she went to their mother to ask.
"Little Ya wants to harvest the soybeans?" Zhou Anran picked her up and walked outside.
She checked the soybeans and nodded. "Yan’er and Little Ya can harvest them. They are already mature."
Xiao Qingya was quite excited. The temperature was so hot lately, and they only had water at home. Gradually, she grew a little bored and wanted to drink something else.
Xiao Fenghao and Xiao Yuxi weren’t at home. They went to the back mountain to gather herbs. At least once a week, they usually would go together.
It had been a while since they sold the scented sachets, and there should be more people who were willing to buy them now.
This particular village market in their area was quite unique. Unlike other village markets that only opened once a few days, it was almost open every day.
That was because the location was near a road. Some merchants would pass by, and sometimes they would buy things from their market.
The customers were limited to the people in the surrounding village. Hence, people would still open the stall if they had any goods to sell. Some travelling merchants might take a liking to their goods.
What made it more convenient was the existence of the inn. Merchants could take a rest there.
Zhou Anran joined her daughters after she was done with the household chores. She also wanted to inspect the efficacy of the pesticide that Xiao Qingya had gotten from the system.
Not all of the soybeans had become mature. They only picked the few that had developed well, leaving the young ones to grow more.
Xiao Qingya learnt how to recognize such soybeans from her mother, and with a stool on her feet, she managed to pick a lot. Of course, she separated the ones she picked from her mother and sister, insisting they couldn’t take them.
The pesticide didn’t manage to save all of the soybeans—it was too late. A few of them had been partially eaten by caterpillars or other insects. The area around their house also had no lack of birds.
After they were done, Zhou Anran stared at the two baskets of soybeans in a daze. The result was definitely better than the entire last year’s harvest.
"Little Ya picked a lot, Yan’er too." Zhou Anran praised each of her daughters. She didn’t expose her youngest daughter who had secretly stashed some soybeans, only handing half of the soybeans in her basket.
The little one had found a clay pot and hid them there.
"Mother, can we boil the soybeans? Second Brother and Eldest Sister will definitely like them," Xiao Yuyan suggested.
With a small amount of seasoning, the boiled soybeans were already quite delicious.
Zhou Anran agreed to her daughter’s request. She would grind the remaining ones into flour or make them into steamed buns’ fillings. However, Xiao Qingya’s conversation with the system about soy milk made her hesitate.
If the recipe worked, it might actually be a good source of money for them. After all, people loved novel things. She decided to wait for the little one’s trick before deciding to grind the rest into flour.
Xiao Fenghao and Xiao Yuxi came back a few hours before it was completely dark. They appeared quite battered and exhausted. They had leaves all over their hair and their clothes disheveled.
"Where had the two of you run off to?" Zhou Anran helplessly stared at her two children, massaging her forehead. They looked like they had encountered some kind of hurricane.
The two of them nudged each other, lowering their heads.
Xiao Yuyan stayed at the side, not daring to interfere. If it were only her and Xiao Yuxi who went to the back mountain, they wouldn’t end up looking so pitiful and disheveled.
Indeed, if you place the two of them together without supervision, they can even demolish a house.
Xiao Yuxi nudged her second brother, throwing the blame away. "Mother, Second Brother went to climb a tree to pick up a bird nest! He threw the bird nest at me!"
"I didn’t!" Xiao Fenghao’s eyes went wide. He immediately defended himself. "Xi’er, I already told you it was an accident."
"I don’t believe it!" Xiao Yuxi complained, touching her hair and sniffing her hand. "Look, my hair is all smelly from the bird eggs now."
Xiao Fenghao twitched his mouth. "Didn’t you already do the same to me? Mother, Xi’er also climbed a tree and threw some bird eggs at my head!"
Zhou Anran sighed, and she pushed her two children into the house. Her hand held her nose. "You two go wash up, so stinky."
It took a while before the two of them were completely clean. The fishy smell from the bird egg took a while to be washed. Even so, it still hadn’t completely gone.
"Have you two washed yourselves with the soapberry?" Zhou Anran asked. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
They nodded obediently, pretending not to notice the hint of exasperation on their mother’s faces.
Xiao Yuyan appeared at the door with a little tail following behind her. While her sister was in the kitchen, she had secretly removed the skins from the soybeans and put some water into the clay pot.
Tomorrow, they should be able to make the soy milk.
With that thought in mind, her mood improved. She went to her older siblings and motioned to the boiled soybean on Xiao Yuyan’s bowl. Tugging on their sleeves, she told them, "Eat."
Only then did they notice the food that Xiao Yuyan brought. Their eyes lit up. They soon forgot Zhou Anran’s reproachful words and went to grab a bite.
Zhou Anran glared at them, sighing. She picked some boiled soybeans and helped Xiao Qingya get rid of the skins.
Xiao Qingya ate with relish.
[I have to go find my second sister to make the soy milk tomorrow. Second Brother and Eldest Sister are so stinky.]
Xiao Fenghao and Xiao Yuxi nearly choked on their food.
