I Received System to Become Dragonborn
Chapter 1347: The Defiance
Seven days of worsening chaos had stripped much of the old certainty from Leonora.
From the highest tower of the capital, Velrion stood beside an open crystal archway and looked across the kingdom below.
The city that once moved with elegant rhythm now carried tension in every street. Defensive wards shimmered above rooftops in faint layers. Messenger lights crossed the sky at all hours. Patrol formations moved through avenues that had once belonged only to merchants and scholars.
Beside him stood the king of Leonora.
The ruler wore ceremonial robes beneath a hastily fastened mantle, yet the dignity of the crown could not hide the strain on his face.
His brows remained drawn tight and deep worry sat in his eyes as he stared over his capital.
"For all my years on this throne," the king said quietly, "I feared war from rival kingdoms, famine from failed harvests, rebellion from greedy nobles. But those were dangers a normal human could understand."
His gaze lifted toward the dim sky.
"But this... I feel like the world has turned uncertain."
Velrion remained still with both hands behind his back.
"It has not fallen yet, your majesty," he answered. "The other Archmages and I are moving as quickly as possible. Preparations continue in every kingdom. We will do everything within our power."
The king gave a bitter breath that was almost a laugh.
"I hope it must be more than your best, my friend." He turned and looked directly at Velrion. "Because if your best is not enough, then crowns, towers, armies, and names will mean nothing when the real enemy arrives."
Velrion said nothing for several seconds.
Inside, he could not deny the weight of those words. Even with the Dragonborn guiding them, even with knowledge gathered from five kingdoms, the future still felt dangerously unclear. He had seen too much these last seven days to pretend certainty that anything succeeded existed.
But speaking fear aloud would help no one. Not the king or the people. Not his group of Archmages.
So he buried it where duty demanded.
"I understand," Velrion said at last. "That is why I will not fail."
Before the king could answer, a sharp alarm pulse rang through the tower arrays.
Both men turned at once.
Far beyond the outer districts, where the great forest met the horizon, movement surged like a dark tide.
Trees shook violently. Flocks of birds exploded up in panic. Then shapes emerged in numbers too great to count quickly.
A massive horde of Magical beasts charged from the forest.
Wolf-like creatures covered in stone plating. Horned boars trailing sparks from their tusks. Serpents as thick as wagons crashing through the undergrowth. Winged predators circling above them in shrieking spirals.
The earth itself seemed to tremble under their approach.
The kingโs jaw tightened. There was fear in his expression, but not surprise.
"Of course," he muttered. "Another one."
He straightened immediately.
"This never happened before these cursed days, but I know now that the world is changing and something like this will happen sooner or later."
A command sigil formed beneath his feet in golden light.
"I will mobilize the knights and city battalions." Then he looked once more at Velrion. "Hold the wards."
The transport circle flared brightly, and the king vanished.
Silence returned to the tower. Velrion stood alone, watching the monstrous tide race closer across the plains.
Then, atop the outer battlement wall of Leonora, another Magic circle burst into life.
The king appeared at its center in a flash of gold.
Wind struck his robes as he stepped forward onto the stone ramparts. Around him, rows of knights in silver armor had already formed shield lines. Lances lowered in disciplined ranks. ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ธ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ต.๐ฌ๐ค๐ข
Behind them, battle mages raised staffs toward the horizon with rigid faces and pale knuckles.
No one spoke casually. Every eye remained fixed on the advancing horde.
The beasts were still distant, yet their roars already rolled across the land like thunder.
The king strode along the battlements without hesitation.
His cloak snapped behind him in the rising wind while the steps of his iron boots rang across the stone wall. His movements carried the weight of command that had been forged through years of rule.
He no longer looked like a worried man standing in a tower beneath uncertain skies. Here, before his soldiers and danger, he looked exactly what he was meant to be.
A king.
His face showed no trace of fear now. The unease that had shadowed him earlier changed into cold anger and burning determination. His eyes fixed on the monstrous tide beyond the plains as if daring it to come closer.
Knights who had stood tense with white knuckles straightened as he passed. Their shoulders rose. Their shields steadied. Their hands that had trembled around spear shafts tightened with renewed purpose.
The battle mages behind the lines also felt the shift. Their breaths calmed. Their stances firmed. Magic circles that had flickered from nervousness became sharper and more stable.
Courage spread faster than panic ever could when it was carried by their respectable ruler himself.
The king stopped at the center of the battlements where all could see him. Wind swept around his mantle as he drew his sword and raised it high toward the darkening horizon.
"This will not be the end of our kingdom!" his voice thundered across the walls.
The ranks answered with silence first, listening with fierce attention.
"We will defend Leonora with everything we have! We will not allow this danger to make us fall!"
He pointed the blade toward the charging horde.
"I swear in the name of my forefathers that I will lead you to victory!" Then he turned the sword back toward the city behind them. "And I will protect my people!"
For one suspended breath, the whole battlement seemed to hold still.
Then a roar erupted around him.
Thousands of voices crashed into the sky at once. Knights slammed weapons against shields. Mages raised their staffs and shouted until their throats burned. The sound rolled across the walls like a living wave of defiance.
Even the approaching beasts seemed to answer with their own savage cries.
Between those two roars, Leonora prepared for war.
"Letโs see those beasts down," said the king.
