I Got Cheated On and Ended Up in A Beast World
Chapter 44 - Forty-Four: Conquering the females heart
The tension in the square had reached a boiling point, but it was no longer the tension of a hunter and prey. It was the tension of a crowd watching a master at work.
"That’s enough, Lin!" Ember suddenly shouted, stepping in front of her. "You’re a female, not a kitchen slave! Look at your hands, you’re going to burn yourself!"
She turned around and glared at her own three beast-husbands, who were hovering nearby. "You three! Don’t just stand there like decorative stones! Get over here! Lin Wan is going to teach you the ’Magic Rub.’ If I catch you burning even a single scrap of bison, I’m making you sleep outside for a week!"
A hilarious, frantic scuffle broke out. Ember’s husbands practically threw themselves at the fire, fighting over who would hold the tongs. They knew this was a high-level skill. If they could master Lin Wan’s recipe, they would be the most favored males in the tribe.
The husbands of Jia, Lilly, and Zhuzhu immediately joined in, forming a protective wall around the fire pit. They stood guard like elite soldiers, their eyes darting between the meat and the thousands of hungry males who were inching closer and closer.
"Back off!" Jia’s husband roared, baring his teeth. "This is a private lesson! Wait your turn!"
Beside them, Su Mei was vibrating with a fury so intense it looked like she might explode. Her white bunny ears were pinned back so tightly they were almost invisible. She had spent all day telling everyone that Lin Wan was a diseased, useless wreck. Now, the entire tribe, including the Chief, was acting like Lin Wan was the creator of the sun.
"This is ridiculous," Su Mei hissed, her voice trembling. "She’s just a cook. A common servant. Let’s go, girls. I won’t stay and watch this circus."
Mei-Ling and Sia looked at the sizzling meat, their noses twitching with desperate hunger. They looked at Su Mei, then at the meat, then back to Su Mei.
"But... Su Mei," Mei-Ling whispered, "it smells so good. Maybe we should just. . ."
"No!" Su Mei snapped. "If you stay, don’t ever come back to my table!"
Reluctantly, the two followers scurried after her, looking over their shoulders with long, mournful gazes. However, as soon as they were out of Su Mei’s sight, Sia paused and signaled to her most intelligent husband. ’Stay behind,’ she motioned silently. ’Learn that recipe or don’t come home.’
In Lin Wan’s corner, the atmosphere was thick with warmth and triumph. Bax, the Rhino-male who had found her, stepped closer, a massive grin on his face. "You’ve done it now, little bird. The whole town is going to be knocking on your door by sunrise."
Lin Wan laughed, but her eyes were drawn to a soft-looking female named Mina who had approached the table. Mina was staring at Lin’s hair with a look of pure longing.
"Is something wrong, Mina?" Lin asked gently.
"Your hair," Mina whispered, reaching out a hand before pulling it back shyly. "I’ve never seen anything like it. The way it circles your head... and that flower. How did you get it to stay? My hair always falls into my eyes when I’m eating."
Lin Wan touched the crown of braids she had modeled after the mother of Dragons. "It’s called a crown braid. It’s actually quite easy once you learn the pattern. Do you want me to try it on you?"
Mina’s deer-like ears stood straight up. "You would? For a stranger?"
"You’re not a stranger if we’re eating the same bison," Lin Wan joked. "Sit down."
She washed her hands and began the process. The "Game of Thrones" style required a specific tension, a weaving of three strands that circled the scalp. As she worked, the other females in the square began to drift away from the meat and toward Lin Wan. They watched her fingers with reverence
When the braid was finished, Lin Wan looked up at Mina’s husband, a tall, sturdy falcon-beastman.
"Don’t just stand there," Lin Wan teased. "A crown needs a jewel. Go find a flower that matches her eyes. Something yellow or gold. Hurry!"
The male didn’t wait to be told twice. He bolted out of the square with a speed that made the dirt fly. Five minutes later, he returned, gasping for air, holding a cluster of brilliant golden "Sun-Bells."
Lin Wan tucked the flowers into Mina’s braid. The effect was transformative. Mina looked like royalty.
"Oh, Mina! You look so beautiful!" Zhuzhu cried out, clapping her hands.
The square erupted. "Me next!" "Can you do a red one for me?" "Do you think my hair is long enough for a crown?"
Lin Wan laughed, her exhaustion forgotten. For the next hour, she was the center of a floral revolution. She styled braids, taught the females how to secure them with bone pins, and directed a small army of males to go out and fetch "the perfect bloom."
The males who returned with flowers looked at their mates with a new, burning intensity. They saw their females looking like goddesses, and then they looked at Lin Wan with a gaze that was so hot it was almost physical. They were internally screaming, ’Lucky bastard!’ at every male who got to lead a "crowned" female home.
By the time the moon was high, Lin Wan was surrounded by her new "squad," all of them wearing floral crowns and smelling of exotic spices. She felt her baby move for the first time,a tiny, fluttering sensation that made her breath hitch.
’We’re going to be okay,’ she thought, her hand resting on her stomach.
As she looked back at the Chief, she saw him talking to Bax, his eyes never leaving her. He wasn’t just interested in the food anymore. He was looking at her like she was the most powerful weapon in the South. And in this world, everyone wanted to own the weapon.
Across the flickering orange glow of the plaza, tucked away in the shadows where the light of the central fire couldn’t quite reach, Su Mei was vibrating with a fury so intense it felt like a physical heat.
Her snowy-white bunny ears were pinned back so tightly against her skull they were almost invisible, and her small, delicate hands were clenched into white-knuckled fists.
She stared at the "flower crown" revolution happening at Lin Wan’s table with eyes that had turned a jagged, bloodshot red. Every time a new female stood up, glowing under the praise of her mates and the beauty of her braids, it felt like a slap to Su Mei’s face.
She had spent years cultivating her image as the "precious pearl" of the Sanctuary, and in a single night, this mud-stained stranger had dismantled her throne with nothing more than some dried grass and a few handfuls of weeds.
The rage intensified until her chest felt tight. She turned to look at Mei-Ling and Sia, expecting to see her own fury reflected in their eyes. Instead, she found them staring longingly at the other side of the square.
Their eyes were wide, filled with a desperate, naked envy as they watched Zhuzhu and Ember laughing. They weren’t looking at Lin Wan with disgust anymore; they were looking at her like children left out of a game.
"You two," Su Mei hissed, her voice like a whip. "Close your mouths before you catch flies. You look pathetic."
Mei-Ling flinched, but she couldn’t hide the way her fingers were twitching, clearly wishing she could feel those intricate braids in her own hair. "Su Mei, maybe... maybe if we just asked her. . ."
"Asked her?" Su Mei’s voice rose to a shrill, dangerous pitch. "I would rather rot in the flood than ask that monster for a favor! Look at her! She’s playing queen with our resources! She’s a thief!"
She didn’t wait for a reply. With a violent jerk of her head, she stood up, her furs swirling around her ankles. "We’re leaving! Now!" She marched off into the darkness of the inner burrows, her three beast-husbands trailing behind her like whipped dogs, their heads hung low.
Mei-Ling and Sia exchanged one last, mournful look with the crowd before scurrying after her, leaving a trail of bitter silence in their wake.
Lin Wan watched them go, but the tension didn’t last long. The atmosphere in the square changed again as the Chief finally rose from his high seat. He stood tall, his silver-tipped ears catching the moonlight, and he raised a hand for silence.
Beside him, his female and his young daughter stood with their heads held high, both of them wearing the crown braids Lin Wan had just finished, their hair adorned with shimmering white moon-lilies.
"Our hunger has been satisfied!" the Chief roared, his voice carrying to the very edges of the stone walls. "The hospitality of the Orycto has been proven! Now, let the fire burn for joy! Let the music continue!"
The drums shifted, losing their clinical rhythm and turning into a wild, frantic heartbeat. The flutes wailed a high, soaring melody that seemed to invite the very stars to dance.
Suddenly, the square was a blur of motion. The females, their floral crowns bobbing like spirits in the dark, were led into the center by their males. They moved with a raw, primal grace, swaying their hips and stomping their feet in time with the deep thrum of the earth.
Lin Wan stayed on her log, her hands resting on her stomach, clapping along with a wide smile hidden behind her mask. She felt a deep sense of peace, a momentary reprieve from the chaos. But she wasn’t allowed to be a spectator for long.
Jia, Lilly, and Ember suddenly appeared in front of her, their faces flushed with the heat of the dance.
"What are you doing sitting here like an old grandmother?" Ember laughed, grabbing Lin’s left arm.
"Get up!" Lilly cried, grabbing the right. "This is your party, remember? You can’t hide in the corner!"
"I... I can’t!" Lin Wan protested, laughing as they hauled her to her feet. "I don’t know how to dance! I’ve never seen these steps before. I’ll just trip over everyone and ruin the flow."
"Nonsense!" Jia shouted over the roar of the drums, pulling Lin into the thick of the crowd. "There are no steps! Just listen to the drums, Lin Wan. Move with the rhythm. Let the fire tell your feet where to go!"
Lin Wan felt the heat of the massive bonfire against her skin. She felt the vibrations of a thousand feet hitting the dirt in unison.
Slowly, hesitantly, she began to move. She swayed her shoulders, her crown of braids shifting with her movements, and the blue flower at her temple caught the light. She forgot about the rashes, forgot about the mask, and for the first time, she let herself simply ’be’ in the moment.
She clapped her hands, her laughter joining the chorus of the night as the males formed a protective, admiring circle around the dancing females.
She was lost in the music, spinning slowly as Lilly showed her a hip-swaying move, her heart light and her backbone straight.
However, far beyond the light of the fires, at the very edge of the Sanctuary where the massive timber gates met the dark, untamed jungle, the rhythm of the night was about to change.
The guards at the gate froze, their ears twitching as a new scent hit the wind, a scent of iron, ancient power, and long-traveled dust.
The heavy wooden bars groaned as a group emerged from the shadows of the trees. They were tall, their silhouettes jagged against the moonlight. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
The music in the square continued, loud and joyous, completely unaware that the entrance to the tribe had just been breached.
