Chapter 419 - 417: Father’s Persuasion
Despite Chen Xin’s patient and detailed explanation, neither the ethics review committee nor the military delegates were convinced by his words.
After a strict investigation and review, the ethics review committee only approved Chen Xin’s application for genetic modification experiments on wolves, but rejected and prohibited research on human genes.
The military did not support Chen Xin in this matter either. Although they were tempted by the powerful combat capabilities of the Space Marines that Chen Xin described, they did not choose to support Chen Xin’s research on genetic modification. Instead, they advised him to focus his efforts on research projects related to Mechas—projects that were tangible and unlikely to cause adverse outcomes.
The military even directly indicated to Chen Xin that if he wants to create Titans, Gundams, Space-Air Mother Ships, or Combat Fairy Snow Wind as seen in games, as long as he can make them, the military will fully support him.
Clearly, ever since Chen Xin successfully created Exoskeletons and Power Armor, which originally only existed in science fiction, the military has been researching some sci-fi concepts, evaluating which things Chen Xin could feasibly create, and which would be beneficial to the military.
If it were before, Chen Xin might be very interested in this, as Gundams, Titans, and Space-Air Mother Ships were also very enticing to him.
But now, given his gloomy mood, even directly receiving the military’s indication, he was somewhat uninterested, only agreeing to attempt making Titans.
This matter is thus settled; although Chen Xin feels dissatisfied and gloomy, he couldn’t possibly carry out the research secretly on his own.
After all, although he was eager to conduct research and modifications in this area, he had his limits. Without legal permission, he wouldn’t secretly conduct such research on his own.
With Chen Xin’s capabilities, even if he really did conduct secret research, others couldn’t do anything about him. After all, by the time any issue arose, he might have already created the actual Space Marines.
Although he won’t proceed with the research, Chen Xin still felt very gloomy in his heart.
His gloominess didn’t stem from others stopping him from conducting genetic modification research, but from wondering why these people were so resistant to genetic modification.
Whether the review committee or the military delegates stopped Chen Xin from conducting the genetic modification research out of responsibility for the matter, rather than personal sentiment, so Chen Xin didn’t hold any objections to that.
But during the review process, their apparent mistrust and aversion to genetic modification made Chen Xin feel they were somewhat overly conservative and traditional.
Feeling gloomy, Chen Xin certainly wanted to find someone to talk to, but Qin Lan and Mo Qingyan had previously expressed aversion to the matter, making it inappropriate for him to talk to them.
Thinking it over, Chen Xin sought out his father to discuss the matter, hoping to hear advice from a senior.
After listening to his son’s complaints, Chen Xin’s father did not directly comment on genetic modification but asked Chen Xin, "Do you think your technology is ahead of current technology by how many years? Can you be stronger than anyone else?"
"I’ve never done any research in this area before, but if given the opportunity to start researching, I am confident that I can lead others by 50 to 100 years! I can indeed outperform them all!" Chen Xin was full of confidence on this matter, although this confidence primarily stemmed from an unspeakable system.
However, after hearing Chen Xin’s words, his father shook his head and advised him, "You’re a grown man now; don’t be so hasty in your actions. Since you’re stronger than everyone else, why not wait for others or simply lend them a hand? When everyone’s at the same level, then you can do what you want."
"The old saying goes, ’The protruding beam rots first.’ If you’re too strong individually, making others seem like waste, you’ll encounter unnecessary pressure. Being a step ahead makes you a genius, but being several steps ahead, leaving others far behind, makes people afraid of you."
Chen Xin’s father didn’t evaluate whether his son’s research ambitions were good or bad but instead advised him from another perspective, not to surpass ordinary human understanding.
If this advice came a few years ago, Chen Xin might not have listened at all, thinking that lying low is just for those who lack abilities, or wondering why he should hide his talents when he can be capable. But now, over thirty, having passed the impulsive age, he was able to listen to his father’s recommendations.
"Dad, you think I’m showing off too much, so they’re afraid... No, actually trying to prevent me from going awry?" Chen Xin thought about his father’s words, suddenly switching to another thought process. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"In a very dangerous task, if you have two people do it, and you know the capability of one—not very capable but you know what consequences he’s likely to face even if he fails," Chen Xin’s father looked at his son with an expression of apparent appreciation, giving an example, "while the other one, you know he’s competent and strong but don’t know the extent of his capability, nor the consequences if he messes it up."
"In such a case, are you more willing to trust the first person and have him handle the matter, or the second person, allowing him to freely take charge?"
This example from Chen Xin’s father made Chen Xin take a deep breath, realizing that in some matters he was acting too hastily.
While the saying, ’The tree that stands out gets blown down,’ might not always hold true, there’s a grain of truth; one can be excellent but excessively excellent poses an oppression and threat to ordinary people.
Although most people might not harbor bad thoughts due to another’s excellence, a certain degree of fear and caution is something everyone might have.
"I understand now, Dad." Chen Xin nodded to his father, and upon understanding what his father wanted to convey, his mood improved significantly.
With this newfound calmness, Chen Xin began to reflect on himself, realizing that some of his previous behaviors may have been too inflated, or one might say, too rash.
Previously, things like Exoskeletons, Isotope Thermoelectric Batteries, or geothermal power generation were technologies that ordinary people can understand and accept—fields the nation is researching. Even controlled nuclear fusion reactors, though not yet accomplished, are at least understood in principle, with success appearing achievable.
But genetic modification, this is something far too ahead and sensitive, though Chen Xin knows he has the capability to control it, others might not necessarily understand this point.
