Chapter 4: Night Of The Swarm

The sound didn’t stop.It grew Heavier, Louder, Closer, Like a tide of flesh dragging itself through the broken world.Arata Kurozawa stood still near the barricaded door, his grip firm on the metal pipe, every muscle in his body alert. The system warning still lingered faintly in his vision.

> [WARNING]

[LARGE-SCALE INFECTED MOVEMENT DETECTED]

He didn’t need the system to tell him that. What mattered wasn’t how many. What mattered was survival.

Behind him,Airi Tachibana pressed her back against the wall, her breathing uneven again. The earlier calm she had regained while treating Arata was gone. Her eyes flickered between the door, the windows, and Reina like she was searching for an answer that didn’t exist.

Minase Reina stood closest to the entrance, gun raised slightly but not aimed. Her posture was steady, but her eyes were sharper than before.Calculating distances.Evaluating weak points.Listening.

The sound outside shifted, Not random movement.

"They’re moving together,"Reina said quietly.

Arata nodded."Not wandering.That’s worse."

Airi swallowed."Zombies don’t...move like that,right?"

"No,"Arata said calmly,"they evolve."

Silence followed that sentence. He didn’t explain further. He didn’t need to.

Another sound cut through the noise.

A metallic crash from somewhere down the corridor outside.

Then more movement, Faster now, Closer.

Reina stepped toward the barricade, checking the alignment of the beds and cabinets. She pushed one slightly, testing stability."This won’t hold if they hit together,"she said.

"It’s not meant to,"Arata replied.

Airi’s eyes widened."W-What do you mean?!"

Arata turned toward her.His expression wasn’t cold this time.It was focused.

"We’re not holding them off,"he said."We’re staying unnoticed."

Reina glanced at him,understanding instantly.

Noise, Movement, Light.

Anything could attract them.

A swarm didn’t need intelligence.It only needed a trigger.

"Lights off,"Reina said.

Airi hesitated."But then we won’t be able to see—"

"Do it,"Arata said.

His tone left no space for argument.

Reina moved first. She shut off the remaining light source in the room.Darkness swallowed everything instantly, leaving only faint gray outlines from the distant outside glow filtering through cracks.

The room changed , Smaller, Tighter, Heavier.

Every breath felt louder, Every heartbeat felt exposed.

Arata lowered himself slowly against the wall near the door, positioning himself where he could react instantly if needed.Reina stayed standing, but shifted slightly to reduce her silhouette.Airi remained frozen for a moment before slowly crouching near the medical table, her hands gripping the edge tightly.

The sound reached the corridor.

Clear now, Feet dragging, Bodies colliding,

Low growls.

Hundreds of them, Passing Right outside.

Airi covered her mouth to stop herself from making a sound.

Reina’s finger rested on the trigger.

Arata didn’t move at all.

Time stretched.

Seconds felt like minutes, Minutes like hours.

The swarm didn’t stop, It flowed.

Like a river of death moving through the building.

Then—A sudden impact.

BANG!

Something hit the barricade from outside.

Airi flinched violently.

Reina raised her gun fully.

Arata’s grip tightened.

Silence.

Then another hit, Softer, Closer to the ground.

Scraping.

Something was...touching the door, Testing it.

Arata’s eyes narrowed, Not random.

Something sensed them.

> [SYSTEM NOTICE]

[STEALTH CONDITION ACTIVE]

[REMAIN UNDETECTED FOR BONUS REWARD]

He exhaled slowly through his nose.

Even the system was pushing the same choice.

Stay silent, Stay still, Survive.

Another scrape.

Then—A low growl directly outside the door.

Not part of the swarm, Something separate.

Airi’s body trembled, Reina’s stance shifted slightly.

Arata leaned forward just enough to listen better.

The breathing outside was different.

Heavier and slower, Not mindless, but Aware.

> [WARNING]

[ELITE INFECTED PRESENCE DETECTED NEARBY]

Arata’s eyes sharpened.

Another one.

Not as strong as the Hunter earlier...or maybe worse.

Hard to tell.

The sound moved along the door.

Paused.

Then—Knock.

A soft, unnatural tapping against the wood.

Airi almost gasped but forced herself silent.

Reina’s finger tightened further.

Arata didn’t move.

Didn’t react.

Didn’t exist.

That was the only way to survive this.

The tapping continued.

Slow.

Deliberate.

As if something on the other side was trying to understand what stood between it and them.

Then it stopped.

Silence returned.

But the presence didn’t leave . it stayed Waiting.

Minutes passed, Or maybe longer, No one spoke, No one moved.

Then—A distant noise echoed from another part of the building.

A loud crash, Followed by a chain reaction of sound.

The swarm shifted instantly, Like a current redirected.

The mass outside began to move away.

Fast and Aggressive.

Drawn toward the new noise.

The presence at the door lingered for one second more.

Then— it left.

Footsteps fading slowly.

> [STEALTH CONDITION SUCCESSFUL]

[BONUS REWARD GRANTED]

Airi collapsed slightly, her body giving in to the tension she had been holding.

"...I thought we were dead,"she whispered.

Reina lowered her gun slowly but didn’t relax completely."We almost were."

Arata remained still for a moment longer, listening, confirming.

Then finally—He stood.

"It’s clear.For now."

Reina turned the light back on dimly.

The room returned, But it didn’t feel the same anymore.

Now they understood, Night wasn’t just dangerous, It was alive.

Airi looked at Arata, her expression shaken but focused."What was that thing outside?"

"Something above normal infected,"he replied.

Reina crossed her arms slightly."It was searching. Not attacking."

"Testing,"Arata added.

Airi swallowed."That’s worse."

Neither of them disagreed.

Arata moved back to the wall, sitting down again. His body felt heavier now.The temporary boost had ended.

> [TEMPORARY BOOST EXPIRED]

Reality returned.

He closed his eyes briefly, Not to rest, To think.

"We can’t stay here long,"he said.

Reina nodded."Daylight movement.We relocate."

Airi looked between them."Where?"

Arata opened his eyes , Calm , Focused and Decisive.

"We don’t run randomly,"he said."We choose a place."

"Based on what?"Airi asked.

"Control,"he replied. "Resources.Defensibility.Expansion potential."

Reina’s lips curved slightly.

"You’re thinking long-term already."

"I’m thinking survival,"Arata corrected."Long-term is the only way to survive."

Airi stared at him , Not scared this time, Not confused, Understanding.

"...You’re building something,"she said quietly.

Arata didn’t deny it.

"Yes."

Outside,the night continued to move.

The world was no longer collapsing.

It had already chosen its direction.

Now it would test those who remained.

And Arata Kurozawa had already decided.

He wouldn’t just survive, He would take control.
