I Am Tired Of Being A Hero
Chapter 316: Finale - - Everything is just right
Two sides of the eatery’s white walls were trailed by long, colored, counter-like tables that were filled to the brim.
"It must be worth the four-star rating." Arlen muttered, "Should we wait in the queue? The takeout section only sells pastries."
Ravi looked at the twenty-plus people who were still waiting for their turn and shook his head. He held Arlen’s hand and pulled him towards the take-out section,
"We would be late if we queued up. Let us just buy some of the pastries to go."
The take-out section had three people attending to them, and they were very fast and experienced. Within ten minutes, Arlen was holding a glutinous rice cake with a red peony brine that looked exceedingly pleasing. The bright red stuffing against the soft, snow white dough almost looked too good to eat.
"We have to bring some of these home for Ash to taste. Sage and Lana would also like some?" Arlen said as he took a slice of cake/
Ravi nodded, They were delicious cakes, "And Anouk and Malik as well. He did give us that gift." Ravi reminded Arlen as they strolled to the next location on their map. "When we come back in the night, we would buy some and I would send it to them. We don’t have to wait to.." He paused in the middle of his sentence as he watched Arlen bring the plastic fork to his lips, wrapping his tongue around the sweet treat while looking at him.
He flushed and kicked his shin, "We are in public."
Arlen blinked innocently, but his eyes were filled with mischief. "I can not have cake in public?"
"Mr Arlen Sinclair."
"My government name. This is serious." He threw his arm around Rvai’s shoulders, pulled him close and planted a wet and sloppy kiss on his lips. "Then can I do this in public?"
Ravi could not help but laugh, "If we are late. I am going to throw you into the sea."
Arlen was about to retort when his phone buzzed. He took it out of his pocket, his eyebrows creasing.
Ravi leaned over, "What is it?"
"They have a case back home. An arson case. Someone has been setting heroes’ portraits or mementoes on fire." Arlen rubbed his chin, "I asked Draco which accelerants were being used. If it is more common accelerants like lighter fluid, hairspray or gasoline, then they should be looking for someone younger. If it is..." He looked at Ravi and paused, "I shouldn’t bring work to our vacation."
Ravi did not feel the insecurity that had accompanied him at times. He recalled the promise that his lover had made to him.
"Promise me that you will not doubt how much I love you, Ravi. In this world and in the rest, there is nothing that I would put above you. You are all I need. No matter what you have done or what you would do in the future, whatever you are, you are all I need. Ravi, even if I forget when I reincarnate, you must remember that you are the most important part of my life. You are all I need."
Those words were carved into Ravi’s heart that even now he did not stir.
"You are still the Captain. Taking a leave does not change that. Chat with them, if it is urgent and you gauge that they cannot handle it by themselves, we can take a raincheck, come back another time."
Arlen smiled and kissed him on the cheeks, "My Ravi is the best." He said before dialling Sergeant Tom and taking a few steps to talk with him.
"Don’t forget it."
Ravi was tired of being a hero. Being a hero had felt like he was in a deep cave with no light. Yet, through some twisted ironic fate, he had fallen completely in love with someone who enjoyed helping and saving people. The Hero association might not have registered him but he was the kindest hero that Ravi had ever met.
Like a sun shining so brightly. In their long lives together, Ravi swore an oath to himself that he would never dim that light.
**
Ravi finally understood the beauty of this popular tourist site when the two of them paddled into the sea, the blue sky and the blue-green sea. In the nearby distance, a beautiful white glacier plunged into the sea.
It was breathtaking.
Whale calls filled the air, the closer they got. The whales were always swimming around or breaching, constantly moving and never letting humans get too close.
The Feed that the guides had sold for 1000 dollars, which would attract the whales to your boat, seemed to be repelling them instead.
"I am going to sue them." Arlen said, unable to hide the disappointment in his eyes, "We should have brought some wine or some cards so we can wait and watch the sunset."
In the very next second, the disappointment faded and Arlen’s eyes brightened as he looked at Ravi, "Tell me some stories about the Worlds you have visited. You told me about Sennua, the merfolk world last time. I still can’t imagine a world that is 100% water." He shook his head.
"Worlds that have only water are not rare. They are quite common. There are many unique worlds. I can recall when I once had a mission in a world where the entire hive had one collective consciousness."
Arlen sat up, his eyes wide, "One consciousness. What of free will?"
Ravi chuckled, "You are viewing the world from a human perspective. There are either sentient beings that have vastly different thinking processes."
"We have to buy an expensive wine for Malik when we come back." Arlen placed both hands in prayer.
Ravi laughed, "Isn’t that bribery?"
"Bribery? It is a gift. I just don’t want to reincarnate into such a world. I want to be a human in my next world."
Many people had that same thought; they could not fathom being part of a different species. "There are many worlds where the species have some humanistic physical attributes like but pure humans are quite rare. It took me a while to find this place. I almost went to another human society but that one was an ABO society."
"ABO society? What is that?" Arlen asked with intrigue.
Ravi had seen so many worlds that a human world with six genders was more than ordinary to him. This world with superpowers and nests, accompanied by Malik’s Tribulation, would even be more interesting in the future, but as he explained the ABO society to Arlen, the horrified and intrigued expression on his face was quite exciting to watch.
"Give birth? Men can give birth!!" Arlen’s voice cracked as his brows rose.
Ravi cocked his head, was that the part he was fixating on? In higher worlds, anyone can give birth but conception is more difficult the closer the world is to the Immortal heaven. Arlen’s horrified look was fully intrigued as he looked at Ravi before letting out a low chuckle.
From the look in his eyes, Ravi could guess what his lover was thinking about, and while it made him chuckle, he refused to follow that train of thought with him.
What are the odds that Arlen would reincarnate into such a world? Less than one per cent.
There are 300 higher-tier worlds and over a hundred thousand lower realms. The only people who had a high chance of being reborn in the realm they lived in are the 300 higher-tier worlds. As for the rest, it was a lottery between the six paths of reincarnation. Deva, Ashura, Abyssal, Spectral, Bestial, Mortal Paths.
A single person...
"I don’t actually mind which world I reincarnate into as long as you find me. So love, do not think too much. We still have many more years to live in this world. As long as you are with me, I am not afraid of losing my memories because I know we would make equally wonderful ones, I am not afraid of anything as long as we are walking together." His voice was like a peaceful ocean, every word was like waves crashing into the beach before returning to the ocean. Under such a voice, how can the harshest grains of sand not be smoothed out?
"Let’s not worry, okay?"
He extended a hand towards Ravi as he asked slowly.
Ravi smiled and nodded once before naturally placing his hand in his, "Okay."
Beyond the layer of the cold breeze that enveloped them, Arlen’s hand was warm. When he held it, he could feel the strength of the hand that curved to hold his. It was neither too light, nor too heavy, just enough to keep a hold on Ravi’s hand and his heart.
There is really nothing to be afraid of when two people walk together, because their hearts are already filled with one another.
The water rippled as Ravi’s energy spread across the sea. The atoms vibrated.
A blurry dark grey shadow appeared beneath the sea, causing the surface to sway slightly. As soon as the whale appeared, it sprayed water everywhere, soaking their clothes.
It moved closer to Arlen who laughed and petted his head with his free hand before pulling Ravi closer, "Hurry. It might live."
Ravi looked at his partner. Arlen’s eyes glowed like there was a mini sun in them. So full of life and laughter.
Ravi thought to himself that everything that had happened to him was all worth it to meet this person.
He bent down to pet the whale. The sensation was amazing. The whale’s skin felt wet and slippery but it was a bit rough. After petting his head, he moved to its chin. The whale’s call grew louder, and it snorted water from its nose, clearly excited.
The whale soon left, and Ravi reluctantly straightened up. He looked at his hand and turned to show Arlen, unable to hide his excitement. "That was amazing."
Arlen smiled, the unrestrained tenderness in his eyes made Ravi’s heart thump hard.
"Ravi, are you happy?"
For a second, Ravi thought of the weathered Sentinel that came to this world. Slowly, the hollowed part of that Sentinel’s chest had been filled to the brim with so much joy.
Gratified to the fullest, Ravi felt his eyes grow a bit hot instead.
"Mhm. I am very happy."
His heart was too full, too complete right now, all the joy mere seconds from spilling over.
The End!
