Chapter 139: A Leisurely Afternoon
Egg had a snake about a meter long in its mouth. Its sharp teeth were clamped onto the snake’s vital spot, and the long body dragged on the ground, twitching occasionally as if it wasn’t quite dead yet.
Phew, at least it’s not venomous. After identifying the species of snake, Shen Yibin breathed a small sigh of relief. "Egg, did you bring this for us to eat together?"
"GAH!" Egg nodded, then proudly raised its head as if showing off its spoils to Shen Yibin. It trotted over to Hah’Er’s side, dropped the snake on the ground, then peeked into the bucket of small fish, snorted, and shook its head disdainfully. It seemed to be saying that compared to its catch, Hah’Er’s was pathetic.
Hah’Er stared blankly at the snake by its feet, then looked at the small fish in the bucket and grumbled in frustration. It was always the star of the show on their outings, but it never expected to be outshone by Egg today.
"Bin, is this tasty?" After her training a while back, Sylvie wasn’t really afraid of snakes anymore. On the contrary, she couldn’t forget how delicious snake meat was.
Unfortunately, Shen Yibin hadn’t expected Egg to catch such a big snake, so he hadn’t brought many ingredients for cooking it. "Ah, looks like we can only make soup. A simple snake stew doesn’t need many seasonings. The meat is tender and delicious, and it’s even good for your skin. Sylvie, you can have some more later."
Shen Yibin got the barbecue grill from the car and set it up. He then took a walk around the area and gathered some wild vegetables. After lighting the grill, he started preparing the barbecue. He took the fish from the bucket, scaled and gutted them, gave them a rinse, and marinated them briefly before handing them to Hah’Er, letting it take charge of the grilling.
"Hmph!" Hah’Er took the fish skewers with a satisfied grunt. It gave Egg a goofy grin. ’You may have one-upped me earlier, but now it’s my time to shine.’
Before long, the first skewer of fish was ready. In the past, Hah’Er would have definitely given the first one to Shen Yibin. But today, it handed it to Egg instead. ’You should taste my handiwork, too.’ The two of them were officially in a competition.
Egg took the skewer with its paw, held it under its nose to sniff, and its eyes immediately lit up. Without a care for how hot the fish still was, it took a big bite.
"OW~" Shen Yibin wanted to stop it, but it was too late. Egg immediately let out a pained shriek from its burned tongue. It dashed over to the riverbank and gulped down some water, which seemed to help a little. Even so, it couldn’t bear to let go of the fish skewer in its paw.
After that, Egg learned its lesson. It would blow on the skewer a couple of times before taking a bite when the fish wasn’t so hot. For a while, the air was filled with the sounds of blowing, pained yelps, and the smacking of lips from chewing fish. The cacophony gave Shen Yibin and Sylvie a huge appetite, and they stared eagerly at the skewers in Hah’Er’s paws, wishing it would hurry up and finish grilling.
"Hmph!" Just then, the second batch of skewers was ready. Hah’Er gave one to Shen Yibin and one to Sylvie. After taking his, Shen Yibin popped open a beer. A bite of fish followed by a sip of beer—it was pure bliss.
"Sylvie, you want one?" Shen Yibin asked, shaking the beer can in his hand after pouring a full bowl for Hah’Er.
"I’m a little allergic to beer, so I’ll just have some red wine." Sylvie shook her head with a hint of regret and took a bottle of red wine and a few glasses from the car. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Huh? Egg sidled up to Hah’Er’s bowl of beer and sniffed. Hah’Er quickly shielded the bowl. ’I can share the fish skewers, but definitely not this!’ It anxiously pointed at Shen Yibin and grunted, as if telling Egg to go ask him for some.
However, Egg didn’t seem interested in the beer. After a couple of sniffs, it moved away in disgust and sidled up to Sylvie. It then sniffed the red wine and a look of bliss washed over its face. It panted, its tongue lolling out, clearly longing for a taste.
"Uh, just pour it a small glass for now." With the precedent of Hah’Er getting drunk and rowdy, Shen Yibin didn’t dare give Egg too much at once.
"Alright." Sylvie shrugged and poured a tiny amount into the bottom of a glass for Egg. Egg took the glass with both paws, downed it in one go, and then smacked its lips with delight. It handed the glass back to Sylvie, looking at her with pitiful eyes while nibbling on its fish skewer.
"You want more? Then you have to give me the next fish skewer." Sylvie seized the opportunity to blackmail Egg.
Egg’s eyes darted back and forth between the fish skewer and the red wine. After a long moment, it made a difficult decision. It turned its head away from the grill and presented the glass to Sylvie.
’Ha, another little alcoholic? But it looks like Egg can hold its liquor much better than Hah’Er, doesn’t it?’ Shen Yibin mused to himself as he watched Egg down three glasses in a row while still seeming perfectly sober.
"Okay, I was just kidding. You can have this skewer." When the next round of fish was done, Egg took its portion and offered it to Sylvie, but she just smiled and pushed it back.
This made Egg ecstatic. It nibbled on its fish skewer and sipped its red wine, occasionally patting its belly to show how happy it was. Its joy was infectious, making the other three happy as well.
"Fresh ingredients really do taste the best! Hah’Er, give me another one." Sylvie let out an unladylike burp and held her hand out to Hah’Er again.
"Hmm~" Hah’Er scratched its head and looked at Shen Yibin. Shen Yibin lifted the bucket to show them. "They’re all gone. No more fish."
"Hmph." Hah’Er’s head drooped instantly. It hadn’t eaten its fill yet.
Egg practically stuck its entire head into the bucket. After confirming there wasn’t a single fish left, it reluctantly stood up straight, looked left and right, then dashed to the side. It picked up the snake, returned to Hah’Er, and pointed a paw at the grill and then at the snake, as if telling Hah’Er to grill this too.
It seemed that in this short time, it had been completely won over by Hah’Er’s grilling skills. It wore a fawning smile, as if terrified that Hah’Er would refuse.
"Egg, that won’t taste good grilled. Let me make soup for you guys." Shen Yibin stood up, intending to take the snake from Egg.
"WOO! WOO!" But Egg was having none of it. It quickly backed away with the snake in its mouth, dodging Shen Yibin’s hand. It looked at Hah’Er again, scooted closer, and once more offered it the snake.
"Hahahaha." Watching the show, Sylvie covered her mouth and started laughing. Egg’s anxious expression was just too amusing.
’Damn it, my cooking skills are being rejected by this little punk.’ At this point, how could Shen Yibin not understand what Egg meant? His heart was filled with frustration.
