Chapter 48: Let the Family Live a Good Life

Su Chen walked into the residential complex, pulling his suitcase behind him.
"Well, if it isn’t Shufen’s boy. What are you doing back? I heard from your mom... Didn’t you go to Shanghai a while ago? Why are you back so soon? And where’s your car?"
"That’s right, Xiaosu. I remember you drove a nice car last time you were back. What happened this time...?" The speaker glanced at Su Chen, then at his suitcase, her eyes filled with mockery.
"Xiaochen, why are you back with a suitcase? Did something happen?"
Before he had even gotten far into the complex, Su Chen had run into three aunties.
He took a closer look and realized they were the same three who had been playing cards with his mom the first time he returned.
Hearing their passive-aggressive remarks, a flicker of annoyance crossed Su Chen’s eyes. Just as he was about to retort, a booming voice rang out.
"Which one of you bitches is spouting nonsense? I’ll rip your mouth right off!"
Chen Shufen stalked toward them with a bag of groceries, her face dark.
When the three women saw Chen Shufen approaching, they clammed up like mice that had seen a cat.
They had witnessed Chen Shufen’s combat prowess before. Once at the mahjong parlor, a sore loser tried to weasel out of paying, and she berated him so badly he never played mahjong again.
"Hmph!" Chen Shufen huffed loudly in front of the three women but said nothing more.
Seeing his mom’s "ferocious" demeanor, Su Chen gulped. ’I had no idea Mom had such a reputation!’
Chen Shufen glanced at Su Chen, then turned and headed for their apartment building with her groceries. Su Chen hurried to catch up.
"Mom, what are you doing home? Don’t you have to be at school?"
"Have you looked at a calendar? It’s Saturday!"
Once the two were out of earshot, one of the women muttered viciously, "Something must have happened to the Su family’s kid. Why else would he be back so soon?"
The other two murmured in agreement before they all went their separate ways.
The moment they got home, the calm expression on Chen Shufen’s face was instantly replaced by worry.
"Xiaochen, why are you back? Did something really happen?"
Seeing the concern on his mother’s face, a warmth spread through Su Chen’s heart.
"Mom, don’t worry, nothing happened! I just spent a few days on vacation in Lijiang. I came back this time to take care of something."
As he spoke, Su Chen opened his suitcase and took out the flower cakes and the milk tea ingredients that Boss Yu had given him.
Seeing the flower cakes in the suitcase, Chen Shufen breathed a long sigh of relief.
"Xiaochen, you said you came back to take care of something? What is it?" Chen Shufen asked, her expression curious.
Su Chen didn’t answer right away. Instead, he asked, "Mom, are Second Uncle and Third Uncle in town?"
"They are. Why?" Chen Shufen looked at Su Chen, confused.
Su Chen led Chen Shufen to the sofa to sit down before asking, "So what are Second Uncle and Third Uncle doing these days?"
"Your second uncle’s family is the same as always. He and his wife run a noodle shop, and business is just so-so." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"As for your third uncle, because of his age... he was transferred to logistics at the spandex factory. And for some reason, your third aunt just got a job... as a waitress at a restaurant."
Hearing this, Su Chen nodded thoughtfully.
Now he finally understood... why Su Qingya had been so determined to make money before.
"Why are you asking about this?" Chen Shufen was now full of questions.
Su Chen grinned cheekily. "I’ll tell you both tonight when Dad gets home!"
At this, Chen Shufen shot him an annoyed look but didn’t press further. She got up and headed to the kitchen.
「Evening.」
Su Zhuyun, who had just gotten home, was leisurely changing into his slippers.
"My dear wife, what delicious thing are you making for dinner tonight?"
Just as he finished speaking, he caught sight of someone lying on the sofa out of the corner of his eye.
He focused his gaze and saw Su Chen looking at him with a wide grin.
"Well, Dad, calling her ’my dear,’ huh? So affectionate..."
An unhappy expression crossed Su Zhuyun’s face as he walked over to him. "You little brat, what are you doing back again?"
"I came back to take care of something."
"Take care of something? What?" Su Zhuyun looked at Su Chen in confusion. If something needed to be done, he could have just called. Why did he need to make a trip all the way from Shanghai?
"I’ll tell you during dinner!"
Su Zhuyun nodded. The two of them sat on the sofa, chatting idly. When he learned that Su Chen had just gotten back from a trip to Lijiang, he was quite miffed and said that his son should take him to see it sometime.
An idea sparked in Su Chen’s mind. "Dad, how about you take Mom on a trip to Dali and Lijiang? It’s all on me!"
Hearing this, Su Zhuyun sighed heavily. "I have to work every day. When would I have the time?"
Su Chen was about to say something when Chen Shufen’s voice called out from the kitchen, "Come and get the food, you two masters!"
Dinner was a simple affair: three dishes and a soup, with only one meat dish and two vegetable dishes.
"Xiaochen, you can tell us now, can’t you? You’ve been so mysterious!"
Both Chen Shufen and Su Zhuyun turned to look at Su Chen, both curious about what had brought him home.
Su Chen organized his thoughts before speaking slowly. "I came back this time because I want to set up a business for the Su family."
"The Su family? A business?"
Hearing this, both Su Zhuyun and Chen Shufen were completely baffled.
"Xiaochen, what do you mean?"
Su Chen could see the confusion on his parents’ faces and quickly explained, "I want to open a shop for you, and for Second Uncle and Third Uncle, too."
"Open a shop? What kind of shop? No one in our Su family has a head for business. Look at your second uncle... his noodle shop is barely staying afloat. It’s a miracle it can even support his family."
"Besides, where would you get that much money to open a shop?"
Su Chen didn’t explain. He simply pulled out his phone, brought up his bank account balance, and handed it to Su Zhuyun.
Staring at the nine-figure balance, Su Zhuyun shuddered, and the phone fell onto the table with a CLATTER.
"Wh-where... did you... get... so... much... money?!" Su Zhuyun’s jaw trembled as he stammered.
Chen Shufen quickly grabbed the phone. When she saw the balance, her jaw dropped in shock.
Although they knew Su Chen had money now, they never imagined he was *this* rich.
"Is this still from the stock market?"
"Mhm." Su Chen nodded calmly. He had already used that excuse before, so it saved him the trouble of coming up with a new one.
He was only going to get richer in the future. He couldn’t keep hiding it like before. It was better to just lay all his cards on the table.
This would give them time to get used to the idea.
Su Zhuyun and Chen Shufen had completely lost their appetite. Both of them came from the countryside, and while their jobs had broadened their horizons a little, there was a limit to that. They had no idea how to handle a situation like this.
After taking a few long drags from his cigarette, Su Zhuyun finally spoke. "I’ll call Second Brother and Third Brother over for dinner tomorrow. You can tell them your idea then."
"Okay, Dad!"
Getting his dad’s support meant he had already come to terms with the fact that his son had struck it rich.
