Chapter 371: Under the moonlight

After explaining the plan to Dyana so she could flee to the outskirts of Babylon, Klein returned to the floor below to help Walpurga.

The heir of Sulyvhan wiped the blade of his katana on a piece of torn cloth while catching his breath. The top of the Alchemy Tower was littered with the remains of possessed: inert bodies, twisted limbs, and traces of black blood drying on the stone slabs. Walpurga stood at the center, completely calm after the fight. She raised her hand and murmured an incantation. A violet flame appeared in the palm of her hand, then she threw it on the nearest corpses. The fire consumed the bodies without producing smoke, leaving only fine ashes that the wind carried away quickly.

"Three more over there, near the rampart," said Klein, pointing with his finger. "They are almost intact."

Walpurga turned her head toward him. Her violet eyes shone in the night. She nodded and advanced with grace. Together, they dragged the last bodies to the center of the platform. Klein aligned them while Walpurga continued to launch her cursed flames that devoured the flesh until complete destruction. The crackling of the magical fire was the only sound disturbing the silence.

"They were more numerous than expected," remarked Klein while pushing the last corpse. "Without you, I would have had trouble containing them here."

Walpurga wiped a drop of sweat from her cheek. She straightened up and looked at him for a long time.

"You fought well, Klein. I would not have thought you would hold out so long by my side."

Once the last body was reduced to ashes, they remained standing for a moment, observing the city below. The tension of the fight gradually subsided. Walpurga closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Then, under Klein’s gaze, she let her power deploy fully.

Her silhouette transformed, taking back her true form without restraining it as she usually did. Her hair grew until it cascaded down her back, shiny and silky. Her body took a more generous shape, with pronounced curves that accentuated her femininity. Violet runic tattoos appeared on her skin, snaking along her arms, her neck, and her collarbones. Her eyes became a deeper violet, almost luminescent. A powerful, heavy, and suffocating aura emanated from her. Klein felt his heart race. He could no longer look away. This overwhelming presence made him completely crazy about her.

Walpurga reopened her eyes and noticed his expression. A slight smile formed on her lips.

"Klein... where has the Lady of Scarlet Night gone?" she asked in a calm but firm voice. "I no longer see any trace of her power here."

Klein took a step closer. He held her gaze without hesitation.

"She is dead," he replied simply. "It is over."

Walpurga remained silent for a few seconds, analyzing his words. Then she nodded slowly, satisfied with the answer.

"Good. If she is truly dead, then nothing holds us here anymore. I do not want to stay here any longer."

Klein took another step toward her. Their faces were now only a few centimeters apart.

"I agree. Let us leave the Alchemy Tower. We will be better off at the Sorcery Tower."

Walpurga placed a hand on his chest. Her runic tattoos seemed to glow for a moment upon contact.

"Do you really want to settle with me up there?" she asked, quite provocatively. "I thought you would not be influenced by my true form."

"Yes," he replied without detour. "Humans are weak... It seems I lied."

Walpurga’s aura completely enveloped him. Klein resisted no more. He slid a hand behind her neck and pulled her toward him. Their lips met in an intense kiss. Walpurga responded with the same fervor, wrapping her arms around his neck. The kiss lasted a long time, charged with all the tension accumulated during the fights.

When they finally separated, Walpurga pressed her forehead against his.

"You are really an idiot, little Klein."

They descended the stairs of the Alchemy Tower together. Walpurga walked in front of him, her long white hair waving in her back. At each landing, she checked that no danger awaited them. They talked while advancing.

"The Sorcery Tower has been protected for two weeks," explained Walpurga. "My protection runes are still in place. No one will be able to enter without me knowing it immediately."

"Perfect," replied Klein. "We will finally be able to sleep without having to watch our backs at every moment. And from up there, we will have a complete view of Babylon. If other threats appear, we will see them coming."

They reached the ground floor without incident. Outside, the night was cool. They crossed the dark alleys that separated the two towers. After twenty minutes of silent walking, they arrived at the foot of the Sorcery Tower.

"Do you really think she is dead?" Walpurga suddenly asked without turning around. "The Lady of Scarlet Night... Are you absolutely certain? I am surprised you managed it. I thought I would need to help you..."

"Yes," affirmed Klein. "I saw her power dissipate with my own eyes. She will not come back."

Walpurga seemed to relax a little more.

"So much the better. I do not want to hear about her anymore. This night marks a new beginning for all of Babylon..."

Upon arriving at the top, in the dwelling of the Walpurgis witch. High windows offered an unobstructed view of the entire city and the moon. Walpurga immediately activated her runes. Violet symbols appeared on the walls and the floor, reinforcing the protections.

Klein placed his katana on a table and approached her. He took her in his arms from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"It is much better here," he murmured. "The air is purer. And above all, you are here."

Walpurga turned in his arms and kissed him again, more slowly this time, savoring the moment. Her runic tattoos glowed faintly in the dim light.

"You will stay here?"

"Why would I leave when you are here?"

They spent another hour talking. Walpurga seemed lighter now that the threat of the Lady of Scarlet Night was removed. Klein, for his part, almost never left her gaze, still captivated by her beauty and her overwhelming aura.

When fatigue set in, they settled under the moonlight. Walpurga rested her head against his shoulder.

"We are really good right now..."

Klein nodded. The moonlight really had something soothing, and at that moment he did not need to think about the future.
