Their bark was dark, almost black, with veins of glowing green moss creeping along their surfaces. Thick roots curled and twisted over each other, making the ground uneven.
The air smelled damp, filled with the scent of wet earth and something faintly metallic, blood, perhaps.
Further beyond, a murky lake stretched out, its surface barely reflecting the moonlight above. The water was still, unnaturally so. And, beyond it, they were there.
