Chapter 1308: Chapter 1316: Fever at One O’Clock

Just when happiness reaches its peak, tragedy ensues.

In the middle of the night, James Black discovered Jane Sampson had developed a fever.

James had grown accustomed to sleeping with Jane in his arms, and he awoke to her murmuring in the middle of the night. When he opened his eyes, he felt the abnormal temperature of the person in his arms.

He called out to Jane, who opened her eyes in a hazy state, looking at him with a particularly pained expression. Her voice was weak as she said, "James, my head feels so heavy, my nose is stuffed up, I can’t breathe."

James got up to take Jane’s temperature and saw it was 39.5 degrees Celsius. He was so scared that he hurriedly dressed Jane, drove the car, and took her to the hospital.

By the time they arrived at the hospital, Jane was delirious with fever, clinging to James, crying and refusing to let go of him. Only then did James realize how difficult it was to pacify Jane when she was sick.

However, despite being spoilt and clingy when ill, when it came to getting an IV, she only slightly furrowed her eyebrows, and did not flinch.

The doctor was an old acquaintance of James and knew the Black Family. He had also attended the wedding of James and Jane. So, when James came in carrying Jane, the doctor recognized her immediately as James’ wife.

"IV treatment, a total of three bottles of medicine. Take your wife to the next ward, if she’s clinging to you, just stay with her. It’s normal for a girl to be a bit more delicate when she’s sick." The doctor teased James with a glance, "If it weren’t for tonight, I wouldn’t have realized you’re such a loving husband."

James responded with a hum, holding Jane and letting the doctor hold the IV bottle, he proceeded directly into the single room next door.

It wasn’t long after starting the IV that Jane fell asleep quietly in James’ arms. He was sitting, and so Jane also dozed off sitting up, leaning in his arms. Perhaps because of this, her stuffed nose wasn’t so bad, which allowed her to sleep more comfortably.

Looking at Jane’s abnormally flushed little face, James felt a heartache, even a hint of regret. He shouldn’t have let her go to the Awards Ceremony tonight.

In such cold weather, the organizers and event planners must have been out of their minds to set it up in a semi-open air venue, and Jane ended up catching a cold.

Jane’s fever came and went for three days before it finally subsided. In those three days, she lost a lot of weight. Jane rested at home, and Brooke Black, knowing Jane was sick, went out of her way to visit her after work. Seeing the already slim girl lose more weight, Brooke scolded James for not taking proper care of Jane.

"Auntie, it’s not James’ fault. I caught a cold during the dinner that night." Jane, feeling guilty for the hardships James had faced in caring for her these past few days, unusually spoke in his defense to Aunt Black.

"If he knew how to take care of someone, he would have prepared ginger soup for you in advance that night. So, what I said to him wasn’t wrong." Aunt Black, feeling pity, gently touched Jane’s head, "Rest well. If your grandfather sees you’ve lost weight, who knows how worried he would be."

"It’s just a little fever, Auntie. Don’t tell Grandfather." Jane clung to Aunt Black’s hand, acting coquettish, "Everyone gets a fever or a cold once in a while. It’s normal. There’s no need to make a big fuss."
