Chapter 264 - 230: Departure
After receiving the acceptance notice from the Central Hospital, Chen Chuan began preparing for his move to Central City. To avoid distractions, he moved into Cheng Zitong’s training hall in South City for his daily combat training.
The hall was also close to his agency, so he took some time to invite Ren Shu and the others out for a meal to tell them he would soon be leaving for Central City.
While Ren Shu was sad to see him go, he was also understanding, feeling a mix of envy and admiration. A few of the others, who deeply admired Chen Chuan, could barely contain their excitement, their eyes shining with adoration.
After all, this was Central City. Even among the scions of powerful families, the ones everyone looked up to, only a select few ever got the chance to study at the Wuyi General Hospital there.
Yet Chen Chuan, a man with no family connections, had earned his place in Central City through his own efforts. He was the kind of person they all aspired to be but knew they never could.
Before he left, Chen Chuan gave them a small guide he had written in his spare time. It contained summarized methods for dealing with various "weird tales," compiled from the Three Mountains Legend and information from Cheng Zitong. It would surely be helpful if Ren Shu and the others intended to keep taking on similar cases.
With things at the agency wrapped up, he considered that matter settled and returned to the training hall, fully immersing himself in his combat practice.
Time flew by, and on December 15th, Chen Chuan donned a formal suit and took a car to a private venue in South City.
Today was the wedding of Director Lei and Senior Sister Nan, and naturally, he was there to attend.
Due to Director Lei’s position, the wedding was very low-key, with fewer than twenty guests in total.
He Nan had inherited her family business at a young age and had no living parents, so aside from her disciple, Lin Xiaoti, only one of her distant elder relatives was present as a witness.
Director Lei was not a local, and the status of his parents was unknown. Attending in their place was one of his superiors from Central City.
Amidst the well-wishes of their guests, the couple shared a nuptial toast to complete the ceremony, then began making their rounds to toast the attendees.
As a Fighter, Chen Chuan didn’t drink alcohol, so He Nan had thoughtfully provided him with a non-alcoholic substitute. He raised his glass with the couple, wishing them a long and happy life together.
Once the toasts were finished, Director Lei approached, leading a small boy of about five or six by the hand.
"Xiaoying, this is the big brother you’ve been wanting to meet. He’s the one who chased away the fake Xiaoying so that Daddy could bring you home."
Xiaoying looked up. "Big brother, if Daddy gets confused again and loses me, can you help him find me?"
Director Lei always kept his emotions in check in public, but at that moment, he couldn’t stop his eyes from turning red as he stroked his son’s head.
Chen Chuan said gently, "I locked up that fake Xiaoying, and he can’t ever get out again. Besides, your dad has found a way to tell the difference now, so he won’t ever lose you again."
Xiaoying brightened up. "Really?"
"It’s true," Chen Chuan said earnestly.
Though just a little boy, Xiaoying could sense Chen Chuan’s sincerity. He said politely, "Thank you, big brother!"
Just then, He Nan walked over and took Xiaoying’s hand. "Your big brother and Daddy have more to talk about. Come with Mommy, Xiaoying."
Xiaoying said, "Oh," and waved to Chen Chuan. "Goodbye, big brother." Then he obediently followed He Nan.
Director Lei smiled. "Chen, let me introduce you to someone." He led Chen Chuan over to the senior official who had attended for his family. "This is Vice Director Cao of the Central City Esoteric Review Bureau. Elder Cao, this is Chen."
Vice Director Cao was a lean old man. Despite his sagging skin and sunken cheeks, he had thick eyebrows and large, remarkably sharp eyes that were full of vigor. His head of salt-and-pepper hair looked coarse and wiry.
Chen Chuan greeted him politely. "Vice Director Cao."
Vice Director Cao looked him up and down, his sharp gaze softening slightly. Apparently pleased by the formal address, he said, "Young man, I’ve heard Guangcheng mention you often. I’ve been quite curious and have wanted to meet you for some time. Now that I have, I can say you’ve exceeded my expectations."
"Guangcheng tells me you’ll be heading to Central City soon. When you get there, if you run into any trouble, feel free to come find me directly."
Chen Chuan didn’t stand on ceremony. "Since you’ve offered, Vice Director Cao, I’ll be sure to remember that."
A faint smile touched Vice Director Cao’s lips. He appreciated young people who were straightforward and didn’t mince words.
He picked up his hat, put it on, and straightened it. "I have matters to attend to back in Central City, Guangcheng, so I’ll be taking my leave," he said to Director Lei. "Xiaohu is a good woman. Try not to be so uncompromising in your work. Focus more on her and the boy."
"You can only accomplish more if your position is secure. Don’t try to do a lifetime’s worth of work all at once. Pace yourself."
Director Lei replied with great seriousness, "I will take your words to heart, Elder Cao."
"Alright, go on. Be with who you’re supposed to be with. No need to fuss over this old man." He then looked at Chen Chuan. "You too, young man."
Vice Director Cao turned and offered his hand to Chen Chuan. They shook. "Truth be told, I hope you never have a reason to come looking for me," he said. "That would mean you’re doing just fine."
Chen Chuan could tell that despite his stern exterior, the old man wasn’t one to stand on ceremony. He gave a slight bow. "In that case, I’ll do my best to stay out of your way."
Vice Director Cao let out a short laugh, then walked out, escorted by the two guards waiting at the door.
