Cave Refuge
Chapter 406 - 330_2
As for testing the gun?
What’s there to test? Once the principle of the bullet was understood, it didn’t matter whether one personally experimented with it or not.
The arrival of the airdrop crate, when Dong Tianyu’s peaceful life once again began to ripple, no wonder before the disaster young people loved to flock to the big cities. Turns out, one’s environment truly can determine the ceiling of their vision.
Originally, Pengcheng was considered a second or third-tier city, and although it had some research labs, it was rather weak in that regard.
Since Dong Tianyu and his group moved to Saxon County, their safety had indeed significantly increased.
But scientific research?
What’s that supposed to be?
This time, however, the airdrop crate plainly told Dong Tianyu that although the camp here was steadily improving, the outside world was undergoing rapid and daily changes.
Dong Tianyu once thought that while others practiced martial arts and he pursued cultivation, his fighting power had already created an insurmountable chasm between him and others.
But whether it was the reclassification of martial cultivation levels that Ye Liuyun once brought, or the special sniper rifles contained in the airdrop crate, all of them were telling Dong Tianyu one thing.
No matter the strength of the wild monsters, the technological level in the first-tier cities, or the cultivation levels of Martial Artists in certain areas, all were now far beyond Dong Tianyu’s imagination.
Dong Tianyu wanted to be a salted fish, but he wasn’t a dish that just anyone could pick up at will.
To be a salted fish, he had to be the blue whale of the sea—although living a very leisurely life, he was an invincible existence in the sea.
It seems necessary to pause the collection speed of Spiritual Stones in the Cave for now. At this time, what needed to be improved most was his own strength.
To the special forces members who, along with Robinson William, had come to Saxon County and their families, it felt like the decision to follow Robinson and relocate was incredibly right.
Although they had gone through several crises in between, most times they were safe, and with the merger of other camps into Saxon County, the security of the camp had increased further.
Moreover, with the completion of the signal base station in the camp, communications with Pengcheng had been restored.
The camp and Pengcheng were now like being connected to the same local area network, allowing their communication devices to have zero-latency wireless exchanges.
Just like the local area network in internet cafes before the disaster, even though they still couldn’t freely communicate with people from other cities, at least the common people in the camp could now get in touch with their relatives in Pengcheng through the internet.
Even though not everyone in the camp could have a communication device, there were many places in the camp where people had set up shops similar to internet cafes, where they could pay to go online and communicate with others.
Although they couldn’t watch movies or TV shows or play games, only able to use forum-like web pages for communication, and could only contact survivors from Pengcheng, many people were still enthusiastic about it.
Because the internet was now real-name mandatory and not many people were online, the current internet environment was actually not very different from the earliest online environment in China; there wasn’t much malice on the net, and of course, there were no restrictions or censorship of any kind.
Everyone who had chatted online with Pengcheng survivors, especially those who had decided to follow Robinson here, felt exceedingly grateful for making such a correct decision back then.
Pengcheng now also had an inner city and outer city area. However, the area within the third ring road had now become a monster playground.
The giant tree that appeared in Pengville Plaza had grown taller and more majestic; its cloud-piercing canopy had become a sun-blocking entity, and the entire area within the second ring road of Pengcheng was now shrouded in shadow.
Actually, that was no issue at all. The problem was the Bug Nest that had appeared near Pengville Plaza was said to have formed a symbiotic relationship with the giant tree.
Those Bug Nests had now fused as one with that giant tree. The nutrients the Bugs Clan obtained from hunting, besides proliferating their offspring, a small portion was directly fed to the giant tree; that’s why the tree grew at such an alarming rate.
Aside from the giant tree’s aberrant growth speed, those Bugs Clan members who had entered into symbiosis with the tree were undergoing strange transformations as well.
The Bugs Clan had an innate ability to go unnoticed, and now, with their symbiotic relationship with the giant tree, they seemed to achieve near-perfect invisibility in the tree’s shade.
Initially, Kyoto’s survivors didn’t realize this fact, but as more of them went missing after entering Pengcheng, a meticulous investigation was conducted and only then was this situation announced. By then, the area in Pengcheng’s second ring shrouded in tree shadows had become a forbidden zone for survivors.
Even though the Officials had issued a notice, some Martial Artists started to capture Bugs Clan members from under the shade of the tree canopies and make nutrient supplements out of them.
After testing, it turned out that these supplements, made from the Bugs Clan, could enhance physical fitness to a level comparable with that of a Martial Artist in the late phase of the Body Tempering Realm.
The efficacy of the Officials’ notice was significantly undermined, not just because some organizations began openly buying these Bugs Clan members, but now even institutions subordinated to the Officials started to silently purchase them.
Actually, that wasn’t really the problem. Even Martial Artists in the Energy Cultivation stage couldn’t detect these Bugs Clan members in the shadows when they hadn’t attacked yet.
If one wished to capture those Bugs Clan members, they had to resort to fishing-like tactics, using bait to lure them out.
Fortunately, these Bugs Clan members weren’t picky eaters. Besides survivors, whether it was domestic fowl raised by the survivors or small prehistoric creatures captured by Martial Artists, the Bugs Clan was indiscriminate and welcomed all comers.
However, these hunters failed to realize that their current actions were akin to the pre-disaster fishermen who seemed to be fishing but were, in fact, feeding the fish.
Although they managed to catch a substantial number of Bugs Clan members every day, the bait they invested in was also continually nourishing those Bugs Clan members.
Besides, they hadn’t noticed that the area covered by the tree canopy shadows was gradually expanding as they continued their baiting.
It was for this reason that since the survivors moved away from Pengcheng’s third ring, there had been no plans to move back inside the third ring.
Now, most of the Survivor Camps around Pengcheng were actually smaller than the combined Survivor Camp in Saxon County.
Also for this reason, the plan Dong Tianyu and Madeline had previously agreed on to trade for nutrient supplements in Kyoto had to be temporarily postponed.
After Dong Tianyu entered the Cave, he didn’t go straight to Wave Rider to indulge himself in entertainment, but instead arrived alone at the Hall of Longevity, fidgeting with the bullet Robinson William had just handed to him.
Looking at the bullet casing in front of him, capable of blocking his Divine Sense inspection, Dong Tianyu became curious about the origin of this metal. He knew from most of the novels he had read that anything capable of blocking Divine Sense was invariably an extremely rare heavenly material or earthly treasure.
But the metal used for making the bullet casing in front of him seemed to be in ample supply and was very likely not a natural metal, but a synthetically created one.
Because only then would it be possible to be precious, yet producible on a mass scale.
Unfortunately, though this metal could block Dong Tianyu’s Divine Sense detection, it didn’t contain any spiritual energy. Therefore, even with its special effects, it was nothing more than an ordinary item for Dong Tianyu.
While Dong Tianyu was unable to scrutinize the internal parts with his Divine Sense, in the Cave, he could use his decomposition ability to directly decompose and absorb the bullet casing.
As Dong Tianyu used his decomposition ability to break down the bullet casing, the inner structure of the bullet was fully revealed to his eyes.
Turns out, the bullet was made of two components: the tail contained a special type of fuel.
After firing the gun, this fuel would be activated upon contact with the air as the bullet left the muzzle, providing the bullet a secondary acceleration.
The front part of the bullet was a solid tip, just like the casing, which had vanished along with Dong Tianyu decomposing the bullet casing, while a special solid material was loaded in the middle section. Seeing this, Dong Tianyu immediately guessed that the substance which turned brains to mush was likely this one.
