Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 94: A Bolt from the Blue
Wren Wynter returned to her room and, as usual, locked the door.
They were going to divorce sooner or later. The thought of Kaden Xavier touching her with hands that had touched Seraphina Sutton made her feel sick.
The next morning, Wren came downstairs for breakfast and found Kaden already seated at the table. He didn’t say a word when she came down, as if last night’s events had never happened.
Wren ignored him as well, going about her business. She couldn’t be bothered to explain anything either.
After breakfast, Kaden’s phone rang. Seraphina Sutton’s name flashed on the screen.
Wren sneered inwardly, preparing for Kaden to leave.
But to her surprise, he didn’t even bat an eye, simply hanging up the call.
Wren was utterly astonished.
’Did they have a fight?’
Seeing that Kaden had hung up on her, Seraphina called again.
The incessant ringing annoyed Wren, so she simply stood up to get ready for work.
"Where are you going?"
"To work."
Wren put on her coat and shoes and walked out of View Gardens without a backward glance.
「The hospital.」
Wren entered the hospital, went back to her office to change, and came out, preparing to start her rounds. Suddenly, she spotted a familiar figure at the entrance to the obstetrics department.
It was Seraphina Sutton.
’What is she doing here?’
Wren was surprised. ’Doesn’t she always get her prenatal check-ups at the hospital under the Xavier Group?’
’Why did she come to First Hospital today?’
Curiosity drove her to walk in Seraphina’s direction. Just as she was about to get closer, a nurse’s voice called out from behind her.
"Dr. Wynter, it’s time for rounds."
Wren quickly ducked into the crowd. Seraphina turned her head but couldn’t find Wren, assuming she had misheard, and didn’t continue looking.
’That was close. I was almost discovered.’
’Oh well. It has nothing to do with me, anyway. I should just stick to my own duties.’
Wren took a deep breath and decided to start her rounds.
Seraphina Sutton walked into the examination room, holding her appointment ticket. The attending physician was a middle-aged man. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
She handed her lab report to the doctor.
"Doctor, I’m here for a prenatal check-up. This is my latest report."
The doctor glanced at the report on his desk, his brow furrowing. He lowered his glasses and leaned in closer.
Watching the doctor’s眉头不展 expression, Seraphina’s heart leaped into her throat.
"Doctor, is there a problem?"
"Your progesterone is too low. The fetus isn’t developing properly. It’s very likely you won’t be able to carry this pregnancy to term."
The words struck Seraphina like a bolt from the blue. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she grabbed the doctor’s sleeve, her voice cracking.
"How is that possible?! I’ve been taking medication to support the pregnancy. How could I lose it?!"
"There are many reasons for poor fetal development. Since you’ve been taking supportive medication, it means there were signs of an unstable pregnancy before. But if it hasn’t had any effect after all this time, I’m afraid this pregnancy can’t be saved."
"It can’t be lost!" Seraphina shot to her feet and abruptly knelt in front of the doctor, clutching his sleeve and pleading desperately. "Doctor, you have to save my baby. My husband passed away, and this is the only child he left me. I... I..."
As she spoke, tears streamed down her face. In truth, she was more saddened by the thought of losing her bargaining chip.
Without this child, she would have no reason to see Kaden Xavier, and he would no longer be soft on her because of the baby.
The doctor quickly helped Seraphina up, a troubled look on his face.
"It’s not that I don’t want to save it, but these levels are just too low. You can probably feel it yourself. As the progesterone drops, the child’s life force is fading."
For a doctor, nothing was more painful than watching a life slip away right before his eyes.
He wanted this child to be healthy even more than the parents did.
"How about this. I’ll prescribe you some more medication. Take it for a week and come back for a follow-up. If your progesterone levels continue to fall, I would advise you to make a decision soon and have the procedure done early, to prevent it from affecting your future fertility."
Seraphina was heartbroken, but she had no choice but to nod. A sinister glint, however, flashed in her eyes.
’No matter what, I have to save this child!’
’And even if I can’t, I’ll use this child to its fullest. I’ll make sure Kaden Xavier can never get rid of me!’
Meanwhile, Wren returned to her rounds, entering a ward as per her routine.
"Bed forty-eight, rounds."
She pulled back the curtain, and her gaze fell on the patient lying in the bed. A look of astonishment crossed her face.
"Auntie?!"
She knew her aunt was in this hospital and had planned to visit after her rounds, but she hadn’t expected to see her so soon.
"Wren?! You... you’re here for rounds?"
"Yes, Auntie. How are you feeling today?"
Wren asked the routine questions. Her aunt told her how she was feeling and then waved for her to come closer.
Wren smiled and took her hand.
"I heard from your cousin yesterday that you work here. I didn’t expect to run into you today. How are you getting on here? Is everything okay?"
"It’s great, Auntie. Don’t worry. I’ve looked at your case. The surgery isn’t very difficult. It just requires good coordination between the surgeons. As long as the two doctors operating on you work well together, there shouldn’t be any major problems."
Her aunt nodded, then whispered in a conspiratorial tone.
"I heard from your cousin. He saw your husband yesterday. Said he’s a dashing man, but he doesn’t treat you well. A man like that is better left behind."
"Auntie, I’ve already asked for a divorce. Don’t worry, we’ll be divorced soon enough."
"Good. Don’t be afraid. The Xavier Family might have a high standing in Cathay, but your aunt and your cousin are no slouches either. If worse comes to worst, we’ll take them to court. I’ll have your cousin get you the best lawyer."
Wren’s eyes grew hot with emotion. She was incredibly touched. She nodded slightly, her gaze drifting to her hand held in her aunt’s, feeling a bit dazed.
She had almost forgotten. She had people to back her up now, too.
"Ma’am, you might not know this, but Dr. Wynter is a big celebrity here at First Hospital. She successfully performed a highly difficult surgery a while back. A lot of people have been asking to see Dr. Wynter since then."
"Is that so?" her aunt asked, surprised.
"That’s an exaggeration," Wren said, a little embarrassed. "By the way, Auntie, who are your surgeons?"
"That would be me."
Before her aunt could speak, Mason Shaw walked into the hospital room and approached her bedside.
"How are you feeling today?"
"Better, but I keep feeling anxious. Dr. Shaw, will there be any complications?"
Mason Shaw smiled gently and soothed her in a soft voice, "No, of course not. Didn’t Dr. Wynter just tell you? The surgery isn’t difficult. We can schedule you for the procedure in three days."
"Oh, good."
Her aunt let out a sigh of relief.
Only then did Mason Shaw turn to Wren. "What a coincidence."
"It is."
Wren forced an unnatural smile. She had an indescribable feeling about Mason Shaw—a sense that he was up to no good.
"Since Dr. Wynter has expertise in this area as well, how about you join me as co-surgeon for this procedure?"
