Finally, the three days of midterm exams began.
I felt somewhat confident about each subject. I think I managed to avoid failing anything.
On the second day, the last subject was Japanese history.
I studied really hard for this subject because itâs taught by TenjĆ Sensei.
Under the watchful eye of TenjĆ Sensei, who was also the examiner, I filled out the answer sheets one after another.
When the bell rang to signal the end of the exam, I was confident I had scored full marks.
I knew it, the power of love is great.
TenjĆ Sensei collected the answer sheets and then proceeded to the homeroom for dismissal.
âOnly one more day of midterms left. Donât let your guard down and make sure to finish strong.â
She concluded with a cheer for the whole class and the day was over.
âNishiki-kun, you look a bit pale. Are you feeling okay?â
It was TenjĆ Sensei who approached me with concern.
âIâm just sleep-deprived because I crammed all night.â
âWere you that unprepared?â
âI just wanted to score a perfect hundred in Japanese history.â
âFull score, huh? Thatâs bold.â
âSensei, please look forward to grading it.â
The conversation is cut short.
TenjĆ Sensei seems to want to say something more, but the next words donât come out.
â? Sensei, if you have something to say, Iâm listening.â
Just as I urge her, a female student interrupts our conversation.
âReiyu-chan Sensei, is it still going to take a while? Can I borrow Nikki for a moment?â
Mayuzumi-san approaches us with Akira.
âGo ahead. Iâm done here.â
TenjĆ Sensei yielded her turn in the conversation and then left the classroom.
âNikki, why donât you go have lunch with Akiaki? Letâs go to a family restaurant or fast food place, and you can teach me about classical literature for tomorrow! You were good at liberal arts subjects, right?â
âSure, but I didnât bring my textbook or notes.â
My bag only contains the materials for todayâs test subjects.
âYou can just use ours to teach us.â
Akira says bluntly.
âGot it. Both of you struggle with classical literature, huh?â
Akira seems good at math. Perhaps sheâs more of a science type after all.
âYeah, exactly. Despite it being Japanese, I just donât get it at all. Whatâs with the irregular conjugations and stuff? I wish they wouldnât change so casually. I always need a modern Japanese translation!â
Mayuzumi-san seems to have given up on the subject.
âThen letâs hurry before it gets crowded.â
âItâs rare for Akira to be proactive. Are you that hungry?â
âShut up and get ready quickly.â
âYes-yes.â
As I go to pick up my bag, Iâm still caught up on TenjĆ Senseiâs reaction from earlier.
Could she have had some urgent matter?
We havenât been eating breakfast or dinner together lately, so we donât have many conversations outside of school.
Sheâd usually message or call me if there was something important, but her approaching me subtly to talk was kind of odd.
ââŠSorry, go ahead without me. Let me know the place by phone, and Iâll catch up soon!â
âHuh, Nikki! Where are you going?â
âIâve got something to discuss with Sensei!â
Experience has taught me that putting off things that concern me has never led to anything good.
Following my intuition, I quickly chase after TenjĆ Sensei.
I dash down the stairs, searching for a glimpse of TenjĆ Sensei.
Contacting her directly via smartphone would be faster, but itâs frowned upon for a teacher and a student to communicate privately within the school.
Since I couldnât find her on my way, I headed to the staff room.
But even there, TenjĆ Sensei was nowhere to be found.
When I asked the other teachers where she might be, they said she had gone to the swimming clubâs room.
I made my way towards the pool at the edge of the school grounds.
Since most students quickly left the school due to the exam period, the hallways were empty.
With the majority having gone home, I could run without worrying about bumping into anyone.
The sunlit corridor was dazzling, and running through the quiet, deserted hallway as if I owned the space felt nice.
Only the sound of my footsteps echoed cheerfully.
As I passed by the gymnasium, I heard the sound of a basketball being dribbled and a voice giving a warning.
I involuntarily stopped and stealthily peeked inside.
âHey! The gymnasium is off-limits during the exam period!â
TenjĆ Sensei was scolding students who were sneakily playing inside the gym.
Our schoolâs most beautiful teacher stood imposingly while exuding an overwhelming presence.
Even the mischievous-looking senpai with an athletic club vibe reluctantly obeyed her pressure and grudgingly returned the ball to the storage room.
It seemed they had been playing basketball as a break from studying for exams.
âStop lingering! Go home immediately after you return it!â
At Senseiâs sharp command, those Senpais threw the ball into the storage and then scattered and hurried out of the gym like baby spiders.
âMake sure you put it away properly! State your class and name!â
âIâm sorry!â
They said, not noticing me at the entrance as they fled at full speed.
âSeriously nowâŠâ
Sensei seems a little annoyed.
I approached her from behind while silencing my footsteps.
In the spacious gymnasium, it was just the two of us.
âTenjĆ Sensei, youâre so strict~â
âWhat did you say!?â
When I teased her, she turned around with a scary face.
Whoa, a beautiful woman really has a different presence when sheâs angry.
Her eyes were so strong that I couldnât help but flinch a little.
âNishiki-kun, what are you doing here?â
Sensei was also surprised by my appearance.
âI was just curious because you seemed to want to talk about something in the classroom.â
âHow did you find me?â
âSenseiâs voice carries me here. Well, youâre pretty merciless, huh?â
âWe lose if a teacher is taken lightly by the students.â
She nonchalantly placed one hand on her hip.
Of course, as a school with a certain level of academic advancement, there shouldnât be any delinquents who are constantly in trouble at KiyĆ High School.
