Birthing Legends: My Womb Creates SSS Monsters
Chapter 258: Is This Just a Quest… or Something More? — Part 2.
Maddy’s face went completely blank for a split second before she flushed a vibrant, furious red.
"NO!" she snapped, her voice cracking as she realized the way her offer had been misinterpreted. "I meant the privilege of letting you call me by my name!"
Johnn froze, his mouth hanging open for a fraction of a second as the weight of her correction settled in. He let out a breathless, wheezing laugh, his shoulders slumping as the adrenaline finally, truly left him. The playful, daring fire in his eyes dimmed into something far softer, almost boyish in its relief.
"Your name... her name..."
Maddy looked away, her hands busy smoothing the front of her tunic to hide the lingering tremor of embarrassment. She cleared her throat, her voice softening until it was barely a murmur, intimate and unguarded in the cool night air.
"It’s... it’s Madelaine," she whispered, her gaze fixed on the dying embers of the fire. "Most people just call me Maddy, but... that’s my name. The one my mother used."
Johnn went completely still. He didn’t mock it; he didn’t even smile. He simply let the word hang in the air between them, tasting the syllables as if they were a long-forgotten melody.
"Madelaine," he repeated, his voice dropping to a low, reverent hum. He closed his eyes, saying it again, softer this time. "Madelaine. It... it sounds very... special."
He opened his eyes, looking at her with an intensity that made her pulse flutter.
"It’s lovely. It’s the most beautiful name I’ve ever heard."
Maddy felt a warmth spread through her chest that had nothing to do with the fire. She glanced at him, her expression shy, caught off guard by the sheer sincerity in his tone.
"Stop it," she warned, though there was no heat in her voice, only a faint, genuine smile. "You’re going to make me regret giving you the privilege if you keep staring at me like that."
"I can’t help it, Madelaine. It suits you. It’s much better than ’Partner’ or ’F Rank.’ I think I’m going to like saying it."
Johnn breathed, a dreamy, contented smile playing on his lips as he swayed slightly on his feet.
He looked at her one last time, his eyes heavy with sleep but bright with a newfound, quiet joy.
"Goodnight, Madelaine."
The way he said it, so gently, as if he were holding something fragile, made her heart skip. Her face flushed instantly.
"JUST MADDY! Call me Maddy... idiot!"
"BYE, MADELAINE!"
Maddy watched as he turned and stumbled toward the tent, the rigid "heroic" tension finally slipping from his posture, replaced by the heavy, honest exhaustion of a man who felt safe enough to rest.
He disappeared inside and within seconds, deep, comfortable snores rose into the night, blending with the restless whispers of the living forest.
Left alone in the dark, Maddy murmured her own name under her breath, testing its sound. It felt... different. Warmer than it had in a long, long time.
"Madelaine... I haven’t heard that name in so long... it sounds... special."
She shook her head, listening to the steady, peaceful breathing from inside the tent.
"You really are a ridiculous man, Johnn," she whispered into the dark.
As the last traces of tenderness faded from her face, her expression shifted, sharpening into something cold, clinical, and predatory. She tapped the side of her temple, mentally pinging her system interface.
"Lucy," she murmured, her voice stripped of all warmth. "Now that my liability is safely unconscious, I can finally stop playing the part of the camp-bound partner. It’s time for full predator mode."
She scanned the perimeter, her eyes glowing with a faint, iridescent luminescence. The air around the camp was thick and heavy, but not from the night breeze.
"This forest is playing games," Maddy continued, her tone laced with lethal intent. "The atmosphere is saturated. That creature isn’t just surviving the night; it’s using the darkness as a tactical advantage, actively luring us toward its domain. It thinks it’s the one pulling the strings."
Before she moved, she looked back at the tent. She needed to ensure Johnn wouldn’t wake up, no matter what carnage she was about to unleash.
"Lucy, initialize the sequence. Let’s make sure our hero sleeps soundly—very soundly."
She raised her hand, her fingers weaving through the air as she tapped into her core ability.

Golden, ethereal particles coalesced at her fingertips, weaving together into a dense, translucent dome that settled over the tent. The construct hardened into a solidified enclosure, shimmering with a soft, protective hum.
It was more than a shield; it was a sanctuary of condensed light, designed to dampen external noise and stabilize the environment inside, ensuring that nothing, not the shifting trees, not the monster’s psychic luring, and not the vibrations of the coming fight, would disturb his rest.
Maddy watched as the barrier pulsed once, sealing Johnn within a perfect, glowing cocoon, far larger than the one she had created when Sephiran was still a baby.
She stood up, her posture shifting from a concerned guardian to a creature of pure, calculated violence. Her sword emerged from its sheath with a sound like tearing silk.
"The hunt is on..."
She said, her voice a low promise. She stepped out into the shifting shadows, her eyes narrowing as she locked onto the faint, steady pulse of the monster manipulating the forest.
"Let’s go find the thing that’s making this woods so alive and so damn crazy."
She didn’t run; she exploded into motion. Channeling the latent power of her Bomb Boar traits, Maddy’s stance shifted, her muscles coiling with the raw, volatile potential of her Explosive Glands.
With a sharp intake of breath, she ignited the chemicals within, creating a controlled, subterranean blast beneath her feet. The shockwave of the Blast Shockwave trait acted as a literal propellant, launching her from the forest floor with enough force to shatter the surrounding stone and send her hurtling into the night sky.
