Lei Wu licked his dried lips. He looked at the safe base that had been shut for three hours and said to his parents, "There is no point in waiting; they will not come. We might as well think of a way to find a way to survive, or else we will die without knowing how we all died." The last time these doors opened was when Bai Meiyue allowed the elderly and the abandoned children to come inside; as for them, she did not care about them at all. He knew that with the great grudge between the two families, there was no way his eldest uncle would come to look for their family.

After all, they had tried to harm Lei Qian. His eldest uncle might have been a kind and generous man, but he was not a fool. Since he knew that their family had once tried to cause trouble for Lei Qian, why would he help them? He would certainly leave them all to suffer! Lei Wu had no hope; in this world, no one cared about filial piety and whatnot. Since that was the case, why would his uncle come to look for his grandmother? It was better to think of a way themselves than hope that someone from the first branch would come to rescue them because they wouldn’t do it.

When Grandmother Lei heard her grandson’s response, she was heartbroken. She could accept her eldest son’s disregard, after all, she had never cared about him, but what about Old Master Lei? She had truly cared about him and even took care of him when he was sick. How come he did not take a look at her? Does he want to say that her life and death no longer meant anything to him? They had been married for so long. How could he be so heartless!?

However, no matter how many complaints Old Madam Lei had, there was no point in wasting her breath because Old Master Lei never came to look for her. He did not even show his face, which made Old Madam Lei feel heartbroken. No one knew what Lei Wu was thinking, but after he discussed something with one of the convoys, he took the people of the second branch with him.

When Bai Meiyue heard that the second branch had left, she was kind of surprised, but at the same time, she was suspicious. Lei Wu was not the kind of man who would give up so easily; the fact that he took his family with him meant that there was something wrong. Lei Wu did not strike as the kind of man who would just give up without a fight. So what the hell happened? This was something that Bai Meiyue could not understand.

Her eyes flickered, but she did not say anything and simply nodded. She said to Lu Yu, "Just keep an eye on things and make sure that no one from the survivors causes any trouble while they are here." She then turned to look at Bai Zhan and asked her elder brother, "Is everything set, elder brother?" She had asked her brother to establish the defences and to make sure that everything would be fine and in place. They had to be prepared before the attack happened!

Bai Zhan nodded and replied honestly, "Don’t worry about it. I have neatly arranged everything." Bai Zhan had no idea where Bai Meiyue got those defence systems from, but he knew that there was no point in asking anything. He simply adjusted them as Bai Meiyue wanted and told her about everything that had happened. When Bai Meiyue heard that everything had been settled, she heaved a sigh of relief. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

Fortunately, everything had been settled, or else she was worried that their entire place would be razed by those things.

It was a good thing that Bai Meiyue had prepared everything, because just as she expected, half an hour later, the mutated bugs started closing in on their safe base. The mutated bugs seemed to have realised that the safe base where they had been feasting for days had turned empty and no longer wanted to waste their time there. This was something that Bai Meiyue had long expected, for she knew that the sentient beings had developed rational thinking. Thus, she was not surprised that they had come looking for food in the Bai safe base.

Bai Meiyue watched the mutated bugs approaching and turned to look at her brother, who nodded and turned the defence system to deal with these mutated bugs. It did not take long for the system to be turned on. At first nothin happened and Bai Zhan could not help but turn worried. He turned to look at Bai Meiyue and said to her, "Are you sure this thing is going to work, Yueyue? Those mutated bugs are still advancing on our safe base."

Bai Meiyue was also a bit worried. After all, this defence system was something that she had received from a stranger, and she had no way to test it out. She could only grit her teeth and say, "Don’t worry too much, big brother. At most, we will deal with these mutated bugs if nothing seems to be working."

However, Bai Meiyue hoped that these systems would work because this was not just about the mutated bugs but also the zombie king. She could take care of the mutated bugs, but with her condition, she could not deal with the zombie king at the moment. Thus, she could only rely on these defence systems or else she was worried that things might turn out of control. What was more, Lei Qian was not with her.

Bai Zhan also trusted his sister; even though he did not know why Bai Meiyue was not making a move on the mutated bugs and was relying on these defence systems that looked weird and too complicated, he still crossed his fingers in hope that it would work!
