After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 241: No Morality, But Humanity
Upon hearing this, Nina Jacobs silently retracted her earlier thought.
’So that’s what he meant by "only kill zombies, not people."’
’Is it because killing people is a psychological burden? So you turn them into zombies first, then kill them?’ 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
"You’re pretty damn ruthless to your enemies."
Fern Spencer silently put away the packets of powder.
’She really had wanted to kill those guys, but not all of them, surely.’
Conor started the car and set off, while Nina Jacobs watched the route they were taking.
’This really is the way back to the old alleyways.’
After hitting and killing a few waves of zombies on the road, Fern Spencer planned to park their car in a hidden spot nearby to avoid being seen.
The moment they got out of the car, nearby zombies had already started to gather.
"Warner, you’d better hide well,"
Caleb Carter added.
"Soul Slayer" had its own Space Superpower Users.
But they were generally timid, and Caleb Carter worried they would mess things up.
Besides, he figured that as long as they could collect the supplies, it didn’t matter whose Space Superpower they used.
However, this Claire Warner was clearly capable of more than just selling things.
Although she hadn’t made a move, she showed not a shred of fear when a zombie lunged at her.
SCHLICK!
A dagger pierced the back of the zombie’s head.
"Are you okay?"
Fern Spencer asked.
She had controlled that dagger with her Wind Element Superpower.
Claire Warner had already hidden herself well and hadn’t caused them any trouble at all.
"I’m fine."
Claire Warner nodded and continued running toward their destination with the others.
Fortunately, the number of zombies ahead dwindled, so they didn’t have to expend too much Superpower Energy.
"These bastards clear out the zombies around here every day,
but..."
Fern Spencer killed a neatly dressed female zombie.
"Looks like they’ve perfected my methods."
Caleb Carter crouched down and examined the zombie.
No bite marks, and its clothes were clean and tidy.
This zombie had likely been turned artificially.
They just didn’t know why.
The group continued running forward, and Fern Spencer agilely turned into an alley.
The end of the alley was sealed off.
The blockage was a pile of various rocks, abandoned vehicles, and furniture, standing several meters high.
"It’d be great if we could get through here,
but the camp is in the very back. If we go through the entrance, the alarms will go off,
and we’ll definitely be discovered."
Fern Spencer was also worried that destroying the barricade would create too much noise.
"No need."
Nina Jacobs glanced around before walking up to a tightly shut gate.
"Open this. We can get through here,"
Nina Jacobs said to Caleb Carter.
Deciding to give it a try, Caleb Carter quickly used his Gold Element Superpower to open the gate.
The courtyard was a complete mess.
But Claire Warner led them up to the second floor of the house.
Looking down from the second-floor window, they saw, just as she’d implied, a hidden stone staircase leading to the next alley.
"You’ve been here before?"
Fern Spencer couldn’t help but ask.
"I had a friend who used to live around here."
Caleb Carter went down the stone stairs first. Only after confirming the alley was empty did he signal for the others to come down.
"I get it now. Using this method, we can make it all the way to the back,"
Fern Spencer said.
Every alley here had been blocked off by various means.
But by following Claire Warner’s method, they could reach their destination just by cutting through the nearly abandoned houses.
And that’s exactly what happened.
Half an hour later, the group had arrived unscathed behind the so-called activity camp.
Nina Jacobs was also very familiar with this place.
It was a community center hidden among the several alleyways.
And her old house was less than 200 meters from here.
The community center was three stories tall, and the low wall that originally surrounded it had been raised.
The group was hiding outside the wall. Caleb Carter peeked over and saw people pacing back and forth on the second and third-floor corridors.
"Guards."
Caleb Carter had intended to sneak in, but that meant he would have to take them out silently with a single, fatal blow. Otherwise, things could get complicated.
"Use these."
Claire Warner, who was beside him, took out two items.
"What are these?" Caleb Carter glanced at her.
"Tranquilizer darts. They take effect in two seconds."
Nina Jacobs was only worried about whether Caleb Carter’s aim was good enough.
But it seemed to be better than she had imagined. In an instant, Caleb Carter hit both of them.
"Are these for sale?"
Caleb Carter had never used anything so effective.
"Not for sale."
Claire Warner answered without a second thought.
Resigned, Caleb Carter had Conor continue.
"Conor, you’re up."
Conor nodded. The moment he raised his hand, a passage wide enough for one person appeared in the stone wall before them.
"It’ll be better if you wear these."
Nina Jacobs took out several special-made masks.
These masks provided full coverage, leaving only the eyes exposed, making it difficult for anyone to recognize them.
Fern Spencer put one on without hesitation.
"You guys wait for me over there."
As planned, Caleb Carter snuck into the building alone.
Watching Caleb Carter’s figure, Nina Jacobs activated "Five Senses Enhancement."
Just as Fern Spencer had said, snores were rising from most of the rooms, and it seemed they were genuinely asleep.
’I thought Caleb Carter would actually use that insidious method.’
But after a moment, Nina Jacobs heard no zombie roars.
As if sensing Claire Warner’s confusion, Fern Spencer smiled and said:
"Don’t worry, he wouldn’t really do that. He might be unscrupulous, but he still has some basic decency.
Otherwise, I wouldn’t be friends with him."
"Then he..."
Nina Jacobs was also curious about what exactly Caleb Carter had done.
The snoring sounds were disappearing one by one, replaced by a few gasps of surprise that were silenced in the next second.
"Mr. Carter is skilled in acupuncture."
Lavinia Vaughn, who was beside them, couldn’t help but say.
’Acupuncture?’
While Nina Jacobs was still puzzled, she saw Caleb Carter standing on a balcony, waving at them.
Fern Spencer smiled. "Let’s go. Looks like he’s handled it."
Puzzled, Nina Jacobs followed.
In a room reeking of smoke and alcohol, more than ten people lay scattered on the floor.
Empty bottles and cigarette butts littered the ground.
But upon closer inspection, several metal needles were stuck into the top of each person’s head.
Connecting this to what Lavinia Vaughn had said earlier, Nina Jacobs understood.
The metal needles must have been Caleb Carter’s handiwork.
Those struck by the needles looked as if they were merely asleep.
"He’s here, just as I thought."
Fern Spencer saw one of the men—one of the main culprits from that day.
"You two go with Fern and find who you’re looking for.
I’ll take Claire Warner to collect the goods."
After giving orders to Conor and Lavinia Vaughn, Caleb Carter took Claire Warner upstairs.
"The stuff is all here. Can you still fit it all?"
Caleb Carter asked, stepping around a guard lying at the doorway.
"I can fit it. Do you want to take inventory first?"
The amount of supplies here wasn’t huge, but it wasn’t small either—about the equivalent of three or four convenience stores’ worth, with a large pile of cigarettes and alcohol in the middle.
"I doubt Warner is short on this little bit of supplies."
Caleb Carter shrugged.
He looked at the supplies, rummaging around a bit, seeming somewhat unsatisfied.
Meanwhile, Claire Warner had already begun storing everything away right in front of him.
She worked fast, clearing everything out in just over ten minutes.
The two of them continued deeper inside.
