After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 230: Making Trouble
Actually, Daniel Hale had been keeping an eye on Wayne Abbott’s team.
He had offered his help several times after learning about their ordeal, but he could only do so much for them.
"If they’re that strong, why can’t they make a comeback?"
Nina Jacobs asked, confused.
She had heard from Chase Gallagher that they were all quite powerful, so she had always assumed they would get through that crisis.
"They just can’t overcome the constant ostracism.
Even when they go out to kill zombies, they’re always getting sabotaged.
It’s so dangerous out there, and getting stabbed in the back is the last thing you want.
They wanted to wait for things to blow over before going out again, but..."
Wayne Abbott and his team hadn’t given up, nor did they stoop to an eye for an eye. After all, he found their enemies’ petty tactics of sabotage and exclusion beneath contempt.
"I see."
No wonder Daniel Hale was willing to give them Gold.
But it seemed they weren’t willing to accept it.
"Now that’s a real man."
Leo Hale said with admiration.
That evening, just as Nina Jacobs was finishing dinner at home, a commotion erupted outside.
Treasure just perked up its ears, listening to the noise without barking.
"Sounds like they’re here for me,"
Nina Jacobs said.
Walsh also came out of the kitchen. He had been washing dishes. He asked:
"Boss, should I call for backup?
Ms. Stone’s team is in charge of this sort of thing."
The Ms. Stone he was talking about was Eric Stone of the security team.
"No need. I’ll go take a look first."
Nina Jacobs had actually already overheard the gist of it.
She hadn’t expected that the young woman from when she first came to the base to look at houses would show up again.
This time, Nerissa Sutton had brought a few helpers.
It looked like a mix of men and women.
"...See, I told you! Housing is tight in the base right now,
and this house has been empty the whole time. Isn’t that just being a dog in the manger?"
Ever since she left with Hugo Crawford last time, Nerissa Sutton had been fuming.
She had wanted to rent the house right next to Nina Jacobs, but to her surprise, Nina had rented all three buildings.
Seeing that one of the houses remained empty, she came up with this scheme.
Housing was already scarce in City D Base. Sure enough, as she brought it up, passersby started looking on with disapproval.
"That’s right. It’s such a waste.
We may not have the money to rent it, but plenty of other people do."
"Even someone with connections shouldn’t be allowed to do this. It’s a shame to leave such a nice house empty."
"Are you saying all three houses belong to one person?"
"..."
Hearing everyone’s comments, Nerissa Sutton felt even more energized.
"Of course she has connections.
Never mind her own strength; her family member is a Spiritual Element Superpower User.
What do they call that? When one person achieves enlightenment, even their chickens and dogs ascend to heaven."
Nerissa Sutton covered her mouth and snickered.
But in the next second, someone viciously kicked her in the lower back.
"AHH!!"
With a bloodcurdling scream, Nerissa Sutton went down face-first.
Everyone stared, stunned, at Nerissa Sutton, who couldn’t even get back up.
"Nerissa!"
A companion at her side hurried to help her up, only to see that Nerissa Sutton’s face was already covered in blood.
"Who do you think you are? Are you insane?!"
Crystal Young stared at Nina Jacobs in disbelief.
It was evening now. The girl’s long, dark hair cascaded down her back. Though she had struck with ruthless force, her black eyes were exceptionally calm.
As if she had just kicked a small pebble.
Leo Hale scoffed. "You’re the ones who are insane. You’re causing a scene at someone else’s front door. What’s wrong with us kicking a rabid dog?"
"We were just stating the facts. You can’t just go around hitting people,"
a male companion quickly interjected, seeing that Nerissa Sutton was in too much pain to speak.
"Isn’t it true that your house is sitting empty?
Nerissa just didn’t want it to go to waste. What did she do wrong?"
Crystal Young said, gritting her teeth.
Nerissa Sutton had told them that if they could secure this house, money wouldn’t be an issue, and Crystal could even live there with her for free.
"Who said?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
"What?"
Crystal Young’s voice trembled slightly.
For some reason, she felt that Nina Jacobs had an unassailable aura, making her feel as if every word she spoke was wrong.
"Who said this place was unoccupied?"
Nina Jacobs asked coldly.
’It seems that ever since parting ways with Hugo Crawford last time, this Nerissa Sutton has been coveting my houses.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have noticed this place was empty.’
Just then, Chase Gallagher and the others came out, drawn by the noise.
"All you gawkers, break it up! Do you even know who she is that you’re all blindly piling on?
Has she ever saved your lives?"
Pascal Paige was furious.
In her heart, Nina Jacobs was just too kind and never sought credit for her deeds. It was infuriating to see her being criticized like this.
"She’s right. Everyone, you shouldn’t let yourselves be used as someone’s pawn so easily."
A voice rang out. It was Sherry Renner, dressed in the uniform of the Enforcement Bureau.
Behind her were several colleagues. Since they were heading the same way after work, they had followed along to back Nina Jacobs up when they saw she was in trouble.
"Why are people from the Enforcement Bureau here too?"
The crowd whispered among themselves.
Many people recognized Pascal Paige, as she was the most outstanding Healer at the base hospital, and many had begged her for treatment.
They hadn’t expected that even people from the Enforcement Bureau would show up now.
That was no ordinary organization.
"Let’s go, let’s get out of here..."
The crowd quickly dispersed, and the scene instantly became much quieter.
"Didn’t you say someone lives in that house?
Then bring them out and let me see them."
Crystal Young said hastily, seeing that the onlookers had all left.
But by now, most of the crowd was gone.
"Let you see?
Who the hell do you think you are?"
Nina Jacobs’s cold gaze swept over the seven or eight people present, including Nerissa Sutton, whose face was bloody and whose lip was split.
’She wasn’t going to let a single one of them off the hook today.’
"Nina Jacobs, are you all right?"
Eric Stone arrived on the scene with a squad from the security team.
Walsh had just found her and told her someone was causing trouble in front of Nina Jacobs’s house, so she had immediately brought her people over.
Nerissa Sutton, Crystal Young, and the others all wore expressions of shock.
’Just what is Nina Jacobs’s background?
Now even the security team has been called in.’
And by the looks of it, this female captain of the security team and Nina were also quite familiar with each other.
The two men standing in the back were already regretting their decision.
They were looking for a chance to slip away unnoticed.
"Captain Stone, you’re just in time.
These people gathered a crowd to cause trouble, incited public sentiment,
and tried to pressure us. I think you should take them in for a thorough investigation!"
After Nina Jacobs finished speaking, Nerissa Sutton and her group were completely stunned.
’They pressured her?
Who’s the one with the bloody face right now?!’
"You’re right. Take them all away,"
Eric Stone said.
"Don’t worry, we’ll investigate every single one of them."
The upper echelons of the base absolutely forbid public disturbances.
Once these people had a record, their movements throughout the base would be restricted in the future.
"Captain, this has nothing to do with us!
We just came along to say a few words on her behalf."
One of the men panicked when he saw everyone being detained.
"We’ll find out if it has anything to do with you after we take you in."
Eric Stone hit the man with a jolt of electricity, and he immediately quieted down.
Within the base, members of the security team were authorized to use their Superpowers.
"As long as you’re all right. We’ll be going now." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Sherry Renner’s colleagues all recognized Nina Jacobs.
Seeing that the situation here was resolved, they took their leave.
"If I’d known it would be like this, I would’ve rounded up more people for you."
Sherry Renner said after they returned to the small courtyard.
