After Being Cheated On, I Became My Ex's Uncle's Pampered Sweetheart
Chapter 116: Defending Her in Front of the Lawsons
"Sister-in-law, Julian is still in the emergency room. He hasn’t blamed Miss Vaughn for anything, so why are you getting so upset right now?"
Mason Lawson gripped Autumn Woods’s wrist, his hold strong enough to make her frown.
Eve Vaughn looked toward him as if she were seeing a glimmer of hope.
But so The Lawsons wouldn’t notice her connection to Mason Lawson, she quickly lowered her head.
Mason Lawson had always been a master of hiding his emotions, his expressions changing seamlessly.
His gaze swept coolly over Eve Vaughn, as if he didn’t even know her.
Then, he released Autumn Woods and walked slowly over to Old Mr. Lawson. "Dad," he said, "I also thought it was too strange that Julian suddenly collapsed at Rivaster University. So, I had someone pull the surveillance footage. Please, take a look."
Eve Vaughn suddenly understood. ’So that’s why Mason Lawson arrived so much later than everyone else. He went to get the surveillance footage to prove my innocence.’
Her admiration and reliance on Mason Lawson deepened even further.
As Mason Lawson showed the surveillance footage to Old Mr. Lawson, the others gathered around, their curiosity piqued.
It was clear that Julian Lawson had been the one to approach Eve Vaughn first. Later, after Eve had gone upstairs, Julian was still downstairs, shouting her name without any regard for his status or reputation.
Autumn Woods’s expression grew even more sullen. She shot a hateful glare at Mason Lawson.
She didn’t suspect a relationship between Mason Lawson and Eve Vaughn, however. ’He’s just doing this to oppose us,’ she thought, ’to make us lose face completely in front of Old Mr. Lawson. That’s why he went out of his way to get the school’s security footage.’
After watching the video, The Third Madam remarked pointedly, "So, it was Julian who went looking for Miss Vaughn? Autumn, I don’t mean to criticize, but you really don’t seem to know your own son very well."
’In any case,’ she thought, ’the current situation benefits me whether Eve Vaughn or Ethan’s branch of the family is the one to suffer.’
Now that Mason Lawson had produced the footage, confirming Eve Vaughn’s innocence, The Third Madam decided to go with the flow. She would extricate herself from the mess and join Mason in blaming Ethan’s family.
This would prevent Old Mr. Lawson from later accusing her of being unable to tell right from wrong, her judgment clouded by age.
As the video continued to play, Old Mr. Lawson grew so angry his face turned ashen.
He roared, "What a disgrace to our family! Take a good look at your son! He’s brought utter shame upon the Lawson name! Running to a women’s dormitory and screaming like that—does he have any idea of his own status? Does he not know he’s a descendant of the Lawson Family!"
Ethan Lawson and his wife, who had been so arrogantly accusing Eve Vaughn just moments before, now dared not say a word. They could only lower their heads and accept their defeat.
Just then, a doctor came out of the emergency room.
Since Autumn Woods was also an expert at Rivaster Central Hospital, she was well-acquainted with the doctor.
"There’s no need to worry," the doctor announced. "Julian’s collapse was just a sudden fainting spell, a stress reaction from being overly agitated. It’s not a relapse of his liver failure, nor is it any other illness." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
After the doctor finished speaking, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Ethan Lawson looked at his father and said, "Dad, would you like to go see Julian?"
Old Mr. Lawson was still fuming. He snorted coldly and said, "See him? Hasn’t he embarrassed me enough already? Once he’s discharged, you two had better discipline him properly. If there’s a next time, he can get the hell out of the Lawson Group. I won’t have him bringing his disgrace to the company."
Upon hearing that Julian might be kicked out of the Lawson Group, Ethan Lawson and Autumn Woods were instantly on high alert, hastily agreeing.
The Third Madam chose this moment to support Old Mr. Lawson, saying in a soft, delicate voice, "Old Master, let me accompany you home. Autumn and the others are enough to take care of things here."
Old Mr. Lawson knew he had wronged Eve Vaughn, but as the patriarch of the Lawson Family, he was used to being high and mighty. He certainly wasn’t about to apologize easily.
But to express his apology in his own way, he said to Mason Lawson, "You take Miss Vaughn home."
This suited Mason Lawson perfectly. The Third Madam had not expected Old Mr. Lawson to give such an order, and by the time she thought to object, it was already too late.
And just like that, Mason Lawson led Eve Vaughn out of the hospital, one walking after the other.
It wasn’t until she was in Mason Lawson’s car that Eve Vaughn’s tense nerves finally began to relax.
But she soon noticed that something was wrong with Mason Lawson’s mood.
The man who usually doted on her now wore a handsome face as cold as ice. His deep, dark eyes were fixed on the road ahead, showing no intention of speaking to her.
The driver drove in silence, and an oppressive atmosphere filled the car.
Eve Vaughn glanced at the man beside her out of the corner of her eye and asked cautiously, "Mr. Lawson... are you angry?"
"What do you think?"
His tone was cool, his expression still severe.
Feeling wronged, Eve Vaughn explained, "I don’t know why Julian Lawson came looking for me. I was tricked into coming downstairs. He told my roommate his name was Mason Lawson. I thought... I thought you had come for me, so I rushed down. I never expected it to be him."
Hearing her explanation, Mason Lawson felt both angry and a little touched.
’This little thing,’ he thought. ’My doting on her wasn’t for nothing, after all.’
However, that wasn’t what was bothering him.
Mason Lawson reached out and caressed her smooth cheek, his voice cold as he asked, "When Julian Lawson collapsed in front of you, did you feel sorry for him?"
Eve Vaughn met his dark, intense gaze and jumped in surprise.
’She was sure that if she admitted to feeling sorry for him, Mason Lawson would devour her on the spot.’
Besides, she hadn’t felt sorry for him at all.
’She just didn’t want to watch Julian Lawson die on her account. She was a doctor; she couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.’
So, Eve Vaughn shook her head firmly and decisively. "I didn’t feel sorry for him."
"You didn’t?"
Mason Lawson narrowed his eyes. "I seem to recall you were on the verge of tears when you called me. If you didn’t feel sorry for him, then why were you crying?"
What he really minded was the thought that this girl might still have lingering feelings for Julian Lawson.
After all, she had once loved Julian Lawson so much that she had donated a part of her liver to him without a second thought.
The thought of this made Mason Lawson inexplicably irritated and angry.
So, his fingers gripped her chin, not too hard but not too gently, and forced her to look at him. He said coldly, "I don’t like my woman crying for another man. But you were clearly crying back then. Even now, your eyes are still red."
Afraid he would misunderstand, Eve Vaughn said in a small voice, "I was just so scared. After all, Julian Lawson collapsed under my dorm building while shouting my name. None of you Lawsons are easy to deal with. Of course I was afraid that if something happened to him, your family would eat me alive!"
Only then did Mason Lawson release her delicate chin, though his expression remained somewhat grave.
For a moment, he wished that the scar on the right side of Eve Vaughn’s abdomen had never existed.
Whenever he thought of that pink scar, he was reminded that his woman had donated part of her liver for another man. She had used a piece of her own body to save someone else!
This realization made all of Mason Lawson’s possessiveness roar to the surface. He knew he should be comforting her, but at this moment, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything soft.
But the young woman beside him leaned softly into his arms. "Mr. Lawson, please don’t be angry anymore, okay? We haven’t seen each other in so many days, and the moment we do, you’re so fierce. It’s scary."
Her coquettish, placating words finally caused the man’s stern expression to soften slightly.
Mason Lawson wrapped an arm around her shoulder. "From now on, you are not to see Julian Lawson again, understand? Don’t let me see it happen a second time."
A mischievous smile suddenly touched Eve Vaughn’s lips. She deliberately poked the bear. "And... what if there is a second time?"
Mason Lawson’s dark eyes shot her a glance. Then, he suddenly called out an order to the driver in front, "Lewis, pull over!"
The driver quickly pulled the car over to the side of the road, got out, and left them their privacy.
Eve Vaughn jumped. ’She had thought Mason Lawson was stopping the car to throw her out.’
She never expected the driver to be the one to get out.
Then, the man pushed her directly down onto the spacious car seat, his large frame covering hers.
