Chapter 379 - 349: Actually, Our Family Has One Too
Trees crashed down as the Dreya Knights launched special attacks against the trees themselves, turning the jungle guerrilla warfare into chaos. The Dreya Knights were at a disadvantage.
Without enough power to carve out sufficient space in the dense jungle, the defensive formation that entered the fray restricted the speed of the knights, who were merely mounted infantry. And despite their strong defense, the attacks from the Liveser Rangers in the trees came from all directions.
But after several volleys, many knights had been dismounted.
The Dreya were not without their counterattacks; they created vacuums by crashing through the dense jungle, leaving the Rangers in the trees with no more positions to move to, like being surrounded by sharks on an isolated island, waiting for death.
Both nations were stuck in a stalemate, tearing at each other, fresh blood spilled in splatters, and the scent of blood piqued the interest of the jackals.
Devonrayla charged in, joining the Dreya Knights, starting to scavenge and deliver the coup de grâce.
The balance seemed to be established once again.
Behind the walls of Dreya, the nation was silent, with tall figures walking down the deserted streets.
"Indeed, it’s a holiday sanctuary,"
Ralph remarked, putting on his hat, looking toward the distant dust clouds.
"Devonrayla brought an army of twenty thousand, all of them? It seems that this family is really staking everything,"
Ralph sighed, sitting on a pile of rubble at a breached section of the wall.
"Is the backing of the Holy Light really so easy to digest?"
"As an enemy of the Holy Light, there isn’t just one nation,"
Liveser, Dreya, and Devonrayla were already entwined.
In front of Algernon, who was beaming with joy, it was all glory.
The Inquisitors lined up at the very back, a single row of about twenty Inquisitors, looking like drops of water about to be cast into the sea, unlikely to make a splash.
But it was a different story if the drops were venom.
The Inquisitor Knights erupted in intense light, which turned into shadows that entwined behind them, gradually transforming into different shapes as they ran.
A squad of about twenty people managed to produce the thunderous sound of a thousand troops.
No, it wasn’t a mere bluff, for their terrifying presence now weighed heavily on the heart of every person present.
Bewilderment and terror; the three sides of the conflict watched this dark army, becoming increasingly dangerous, dangerous enough to send shivers down the spine of even their allies.
The ranks of the Inquisitor Legion became like a ten-thousand-strong force.
Forming a deadly tide, they surged toward the battlefield.
The goal of the Inquisitors was never just the destruction of Liveser. Dreya, too, was an enemy who had turned their back on the Holy Light, weren’t they?
What Algernon wanted was obliteration, the extermination of both nations. Using Dreya to contain Liveser’s mobility, then wiping them out in one fell swoop. For this, he funded the Devonrayla family and promised them the kingdom they desired.
The Holy Light is honest, but against evil, and the dirty evil lurkers, the Holy Light need not show the slightest bit of mercy.
Algernon remembered the ever-smiling emissary and sneered, both he and his seemingly smart master had forgotten that power is supreme, cleverness is merely decoration on the crown.
They, and all they hoped for, would today become history, or perhaps not even make it into history.
"We will consume all sins, we are the Inquisitor Legion, kill them all!"
With Algernon’s last gamble echoing across the battlefield, the Inquisitor Knights shone with streaks of light, the Legendary Legion becoming the fear of common folk. That fatal oppression made it nearly impossible for Rangers and knights to hold their weapons, and the darkness beneath that light almost froze their blood.
```
The instinctual fear of living creatures almost made ordinary people faint; most of Devonrayla’s troops had already knelt down, their eyes tightly closed, praying for the Holy Light’s forgiveness.
Kayla watched the army charging like a nightmare, a bad dream turned into reality, Liveser, absolutely no chance to struggle.
"Pick up your bows, how can the Son of the Forest relax!" the roar contained a bit of clarity, an old voice appeared in everyone’s ears.
That voice, all too familiar to Kayla, and to the older generation of Rangers of Liveser, surprised and expectant, the Rangers of Liveser looked towards the hilltop not far away.
The rolling hills nearly blended with the sunlight into a single line, somewhat dazzling, and after the light dimmed, a figure appeared on top of the hill, looking down at the people below.
He had an aged face, his skin wrinkled with aging but set with eyes sharp as a hawk’s. He wore the ornate feathered cloak in the style of Liveser and held an exaggerated silver bow. An olive branch crown restrained his thick hair, also lending a bit of sanity to this wild man.
"It’s His Majesty Echel Liveser! Our founder! The respected Former King!!!!!"
"The King of Rangers has been resurrected!!!!!!"
"The King must have sensed the danger to Liveser, the King has come to save us!!!!!"
Toto, who had been eagerly prepared, joyfully spread the news of the Former King’s resurrection to all of Liveser.
Liveser saw hope again!
Like the sound of budding twigs, every Ranger of Liveser began to glow with a pale green light, including Kayla herself, who looked surprised at the strength in her hands, feeling her body no longer fatigued.
Every Ranger of Liveser felt connected to each other, their eyes sharp, surpassing the past.
The founder is invincible, this belief deeply engraved in every Ranger’s heart.
If Lyle were here, he would join Algernon in saying the same thing.
"The power of our tribe."
The majestic King issued his own decree.
"Kayla, my successor! Look, this is our strength!"
"King’s Power, Specter Hunter!"
The Rangers of Liveser, vanished.
As though they had never existed, even those who had been restrained by the Dreya Knights a moment before had turned to air, leaving behind baffled knights.
They thought the Rangers had run away, which was the Dreya Knights’ first thought, although this idea was quickly shredded by the whistling of arrows. Those arrows burst out of nowhere, grazing the armor of the Dreya Knights, and turned Devonrayla’s troops into dust.
"Crossbow Cannons." An enemy struck by the arrows exploded because of the huge impact force; some Dreya Knights were only grazed by a feather or two and still deep gashes appeared on their armor.
Even though they did not know why, the Rangers of Liveser didn’t attack the Dreya Knights, which provided a chance for the people of Dreya to feel fear.
And jealousy.
"Damn it! Why do these monkeys’ Former King get resurrected and strengthen their army, why must we suffer the impact of the Holy Light alone!" Queen Lina Dreya raged on the spot, not finishing her thoughts, but Benjamin beside her understood from her frustrated face.
Why don’t we have an ancestral revival! Why are we still here in fear.
Benjamin raised his shield, facing the Inquisitor, both for defense and to hide his face.
He really didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of his queen.
Actually, we have one too.
