Abyss Summoner
Chapter 495 - 483: Mirage
Three days.
The ship has been sailing on the sea for three days.
In the past, the sea was never calm; several coastal cities had trading vessels going to and fro. Yet in these three days, Chen Feng hadn’t encountered a single ship.
The apocalypse destroyed many things. The civilization and prosperity of the past were perhaps long lost within the disaster.
Chen Feng sat quietly in the cabin.
The room was 200 square meters and luxuriously decorated. Some carved artworks were placed around, with a bear rug underfoot. As a ruler, Chen Feng enjoyed this decadent life with a clear conscience.
"Tap... tap..."
The sound of hurried footsteps, followed by a soldier’s report at the door: "Sir... we’ve discovered a city up ahead..."
Chen Feng opened his eyes, got off the bed, and walked to the door, opening it.
The soldier stood at the door, a trace of excitement lingering on his face. After all, familiar with the mainland life, they felt somewhat uneasy on this vast, boundless sea.
Discovering a city in front of the ship made most of the soldiers genuinely happy.
"What’s going on?" Chen Feng asked, looking at the soldier.
The soldier took a deep breath, seemingly trying to calm himself, quickly replied: "Sir, we found a city ahead, and the pier is bustling with a crowd. The city looks very prosperous."
Hearing this, Chen Feng couldn’t control his thoughts and hurried to the deck.
He was somewhat dazed.
Chen Feng finally understood why the soldier had such a complicated expression. Not far away, just over 500 meters away, there was indeed a harbor.
In Chen Feng’s mind, the disaster had destroyed many civilizations. In fact, he was prepared to witness a dead city.
But the sight before him greatly exceeded his expectations.
Near the harbor, ships were jam-packed. Not the wooden ship beneath his feet, but the steel-forged cruise ships. On the harbor, there was also a surging crowd. At this time, these people were very busy, unloading goods from the cruise ships.
Due to being at the Golden Tier, Chen Feng’s vision was quite strong. He could clearly see that those people had no trace of worry on their faces.
These people seemed as though they had never experienced the apocalypse, everyone diligently working, some even laughing loudly, not a hint of pessimism due to the apocalypse.
Could this be a city never attacked?
Or, only the area near Order was a disaster zone, and other cities never encountered the terrifying zombies and insects?
At this moment, the soldiers on board showed curiosity, watching everything in front of them. Some even shouted loudly, attempting to attract attention from the opposite shore.
Never having experienced the apocalypse, they couldn’t feel that despair.
It’s like opening a door to pitch darkness outside. Whether it’s night or day, the sky is always shrouded in darkness. You despair, you grieve, thinking you’ll never see the light again, opting to venture alone, only to find that your neighborhood was just covered by a piece of black cloth while outside remains sunny and bright.
Cruise ship.
Harbor.
And the carefree workers.
Even, in the harbor’s shallows, some children were playing and laughing, catching fish and shrimp, putting them in baskets tied around their waists, faces full of contentment.
All these rekindled hope in the people’s hearts. They were desperate to head over and ask if people’s civilization hadn’t been destroyed.
Televisions, fridges, and cars – could these convenient tools still be used?
Most people focused their eyes on Chen Feng, awaiting one word for them to proceed forward to find the answer.
Chen Feng opened his mouth and spoke the word people hoped for: "Gunners ready, target the harbor ahead, fire!"
"Hiss!"
Many soldiers gasped, Chen Feng’s order completely contrary to their imagination.
The command was to... fire?! 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
The Demon and Martial Cannon had been refined; each shell contained not just explosives but also corrosive liquid. It was not hard to imagine, when such a terrifying weapon struck amongst people, ordinary folks would suffer devastating blows.
"Sir..."
Some soldiers showed a painful expression, trying to advise something.
But Chen Feng’s gaze was fixed forward, contrasted to everyone’s hopes, he appeared somewhat unusual. A cold voice again escaped his lips, adding impatience: "Forward, fire!"
The soldiers’ bodies trembled; as warriors, they had long learned to obey orders, even if the gunners felt reluctant, they couldn’t defy Chen Feng’s command, choosing to aim the cannon towards the harbor instead.
"Boom!"
With a massive blast, the shell traced a long arc, directly striking the harbor. Some soldiers showed unwillingness, as though those optimistic people were going to become a pile of corpses the next second.
But then, an astonishing scene occurred.
The so-called harbor seemed like a film, as the shell hit the ground, it unexpectedly passed through entirely, after a moment, a loud explosion ensued.
The harbor remained intact.
Those people acted as if nothing happened, continuing their work undisturbed.
In Chen Feng’s right eye, a faint glow radiated, murmuring to himself: "What a mirage."
It was all fake.
Whether the ships or the workers, even the children by the sea, were just illusions.
This mirage wasn’t without flaws, given the short distance, the people at the harbor should have simultaneously noticed Chen Feng’s fleet.
Strangely, those people showed no reaction, immersed in their work, seemingly with endless cargo on the ship, and the laborers seemed to have inexhaustible energy. As for those children catching fish and shrimp, Chen Feng counted, in just a few minutes, a small basket contained dozens of crabs and fish, yet it remained unfilled.
Mirage?
Or perhaps...
This was deliberately created by something!
Chen Feng’s right eye was obtained through Blood Sacrifice. After reaching the Golden Tier, his eye’s abilities also evolved. At this moment, he stared at the fog intently, where four mottled light dots appeared in his eyes, initially slowly rotating, gradually speeding up, like a vortex trying to devour everything in sight.
"Crack..."
As if something shattered; with Chen Feng’s power unleashed, a piece of the harbor suddenly disappeared, like a puzzle missing a piece. The image of docked ships vanished, and the porters could pull non-existent goods from the void.
The cracking sound widened as Chen Feng continued exerting power; eventually, everything in sight vanished like smoke, and the harbor revealed its true form.
Where the ships docked was a pile of wrecked ships, only the decks exposed above the sea, the hulls submerged underwater. The porters were mere skeletons, flesh long gone after a year of erosion, leaving behind dozens of skulls and bones, lonely on the ground. As for the seaside, there were no frolicking children, only a few tongue-flicking, wandering giant lizards.
Once again, everyone felt disappointed.
The apocalypse targeted not just Order but inflicted devastation on all nearby cities.
If the harbor of Order held a trace of hope for the future, here it had wholly become a city of death.
Civilization, humanity, these left no trace of existence.
Amongst this desolate scene, a peculiar figure appeared, facing here.
A girl.
A girl with eyes closed and a face serene.
She seemed to be asleep, even though a shell exploded around her, she still didn’t open her eyes.
This was only part of the strange figure; beneath the girl’s head was a repulsive face, entirely green, like a toad, with a bulging mouth, round, protruding eyes, and a wrinkled skin full of bumps.
The girl wasn’t asleep.
She was dead.
She had no lower body, simply a head placed atop the monster’s head, for that creature, the girl might just be a...
A hat to keep warm.
